A Response to the RNC Campaign Ad

A BUZZFLASH READER COMMENTARY

By Dan (from Minnesota)

PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH: "It would take one vial, one canister, one crate slipped into this country to bring a day of horror like none we have ever known."

* Sure! But it would take a candidate of strong principals to acknowledge the reality that our own foreign policy, our secret negotiations with dictators, our State sponsored coups to overthrow governments, our economic trade policy, our gluttony and greed etc. has created the hatred against this country and consequently, events like the 9-11 attacks A true leader would examine the conditions which lead to terrorism in the first place and take action to treat the disease, not the symptoms.

NARRATOR: Strong and Principled Leadership

* ... and the question read: Name two things you will never have when ideologues and special interest groups run the country.

PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH: "Our war against terror is a contest of will in which perseverance is power."

* ... and those who have the least to lose usually have the greatest perseverance.. Terrorists understand fear but fear is only a means to an end. The ultimate goal is crumble the foundations of the system. After 9-11, we got the Patriot act. We got the suspension of Habeas Corpus. We have threats to the civil rights we have become accustomed to. The Terrorists have already won. Bush made us less safe, less secure, less independent and less free.

NARRATOR: Some are now attacking the President for attacking the terrorists.

* We are not attacking the President for attacking the terrorists. We are attacking the President for aiding the terrorists. When 9-11 happened, the world responded with compassion and support. If something like 9-11 happened today, (because of unilateral, preemptive war on Iraq), the world would respond with accusations that we created our own problems and that we deserved it. That's what the terrorists wanted and that's what the terrorists got.  Thanks Mr. President.

PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH: "Some have said we must not act until the threat is imminent. Since when have terrorists and tyrants announced their intentions, politely putting us on notice before they strike?"

* Since when? Great question! I'm thinking sometime in 1998 when the FBI had information about terrorists using airplanes as bombs against targets in a major U.S. city. Although we'll probably never know the full answer to that since you refuse to cooperate with the 9-11 commission investigating what you knew and when you knew it. Furthermore, since when is violating international law, even if you believe it's a good idea the right thing to do?

NARRATOR: Some call for us to retreat, putting our national security in the hands of others.

* Some might. Others call for us lay out a clear and intelligent strategy for exiting Iraq with our security and international standing in tact. Still, others call for us to establish a policy demanding that the case for war be based on accurate, verifiable and independent intelligence. Others call for us to work within the boundaries of international law thereby demonstrating to the world community that the United States is not in fact a nation of bullies. Others simply want our President to keep his mouth shut rather than provoking our enemies with sophomoric taunts like "bring 'em on."

See, that's the foundation of a democracy; the freedom to voice dissent, the courage to explore options, the humility to admit failures ... but you wouldn't understand that would you Mr. President?

NARRATOR: Call Congress Now

* Done.

NARRATOR: Tell them to support the President's policy of preemptive self-defense.

* Actually, I told them to go back, re-read their job description and highlight the parts that say that they were elected to, first, represent me, not the President, not Pfizer or Bacardi Rum. And second, I told them to make the laws; not turn that job over to the President. Then I told them to shut the hell up, quit complaining about the partisan bickering and do their damn job.

REPUBLICAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN ED GILLESPIE: "The Republican National Committee is responsible for the content of this advertising."

NARRATOR: The Republican National Committee paid for and is responsible for the content of this advertising. Not authorized by any candidate or candidate committee. www.gop.com

* ... and I could have sworn this ad was paid for by The Organization To Elect A President Through The Repeated Use Of Fear And Distortion.
