The DOJ Already Failed in the Plame Outing

A BUZZFLASH READER COMMENTARY

Subject: Leaks of CIA Agent's Identity

Dear Senator Dewine:

I am writing to you to assert that the Justice Department has already failed to properly investigate the allegations of leaks of the name of an undercover CIA agent by individuals in the Bush White House. This failure clearly means that an independent investigation by a special council must be started immediately. This matter is of great importance to our national security and the investigation must be beyond reproach if trust in our government is to be restored.

The Department of Justice has failed in the following ways:

* Although asked by the CIA almost 3 months ago to investigate this matter they did not ask the White House to preserve documents until September 30.

* Although asked by the CIA almost 3 months ago to investigate this matter, according to most accounts they still have not conducted interviews of anyone at the White House, ambassador Wilson or his wife.

* Although asked by the CIA almost 3 months ago to investigate this matter the Justice Department, according to its own admission, as of September 29th, 2003 still had not even taken the basic step of following up with the CIA on the important questions of the distribution of this agent's identity, whether national security had been harmed and other important matters. Listening to their statements it appears that Justice didn't follow up at
all.

Regarding National Security:

In case you are tempted to wonder if this matter is indeed important to our national security please consider the following: Recent reports about the 9-11 attacks and the pre-war intelligence on Iraq point to the fact that the United States currently has extremely weak "Human Intelligence" at its disposal. Can there be ANY DOUBT that leaking an agent's identity to the public will further weaken our ability to recruit people to assist us in this very important arena?

In summary, there simply must be an independent investigation into this matter as the Justice Department has already proven, by its inaction over the last three months, that it has no interest in uncovering the truth and protecting the national security of the United States of America. They have clearly chosen politics over patriotism.

Your country or your party: Which will YOU chose?

Sincerely,

John E. Haag, Constituent & Concerned Citizen
