Rebutting Bush's Amazing Claim to Have Created "1.5 million" Jobs A BUZZFLASH GUEST CONTRIBUTION Re:
Bunk Patrol - Rebutting Bush's Amazing Claim to Have Created "1.5
million" Jobs -------------------------------------------------- Thursday, September 4, 2003, George Bush, speaking in Kansas City said: "...as many as 1.5 million Americans who went to work this morning would have been out of a job" if his tax breaks had not been passed. [LINK] This is claim is blatantly false. News reports say that Bush will repeat the speech around the nation many times, presumably with the hope that Americans will believe anything if they hear it repeated often enough. We urge progressive leaders to lead the "push back" based on the truth about the economy, Bush's failure, and the harsh job realities Americans are now facing. Leaders should call their local media, offer their comment and real-world perspectives. How to rebut this week's Bush bunk: **Bush Claim to Have Created 1.5 Million New Jobs is Preposterous George Bush's tax breaks did not create 1.5 million jobs. The Bush tax breaks have created the worst deficits in history, and still America has lost more than 3.2 million jobs [Bureau of Labor Statistics, 9/03] since he took office. Bush has the worst economic record of any president since World War II. The unemployment rate has gone up 50% -- from 4% to 6.1% in less than three years. Bush economics have not resulted in the net creation of a single job. **George Bush - "Revisionist Historian" To sell the tax breaks; Bush made specific promises of jobs growth. According to the White House's own estimates - Bush has fallen 437,000 jobs short of that promise for August alone [see www.JobWatch.org for Economic Policy Institute Analysis]. So to mislead people, Bush now says that the has avoided the loss of more jobs according to a report that the Treasury department says is "unavailable." **George Bush Did Not "Soften" the Jobs Recession - He Made It Worse The reality is that Bush's tax cuts created deficits as far as the eye can see without creating any jobs. This job contraction is the worst since the Great Depression despite the ballooning deficits. He handed out huge tax breaks to the super wealthy who are being advised to invest overseas. Want to see the jobs Bush created? Go to Shanghai, not Saginaw. **George Bush: Expert Misleader This White House is expert at misleading the American people. But the real problem is that Bush may be kidding himself on the economy, just as he deluded himself on Iraq. When he proclaims his tax cuts a success, he believes his work is done. So Bush has no plan to produce jobs or to stop the hemorrhaging of manufacturing job - he just hands his buddies billions and keeps his fingers crossed. It's bad enough when the president lies to Americans about their jobs - it's a lot worse when he starts believing his own lies. **George Bush: The Buck Stops Anywhere But Here We need a leader who will not duck responsibility for a failing economy, but who will take responsibility and put Americans back to work. As the economy sputters and Americans lose their jobs, George Bush cooks the books and points fingers anywhere but at his own failed agenda. Top 3 questions the media should be asking: 1) Where is this new "unavailable" treasury department report? And why is this mystery analysis different from the analysis used to sell his tax breaks? 2) Isn't it true that the Bush tax breaks have not created a single net job? 3) Isn't it true that the president's appears to be misleading America about his economic failures?
