I am seeing more and more editorials in the international press on the
subject of the EU or perhaps certain members of the EU forming a strategic
security block to check the US. I truly believe that this block would
not need to exist if a Democrat was in the White House. While Clinton
was in office, the EU was only half-heartedly meeting together to discuss
security matters. But now that the UN has been trashed by the Bushites,
even NATO is in danger of breaking up over disastrous Republican foreign
policy.
I read in the Washington Post yesterday that Clinton met with
a group of Democrats and told them how they can beat Dubya in 2004. He
said:
1) study what the public likes about Dubya and learn from it and 2)
offer something DIFFERENT than what Repugs are offering. The Democrats
need
to use THE ECONOMY and NATIONAL SECURITY/FOREIGN POLICY as their main
campaign message in 2004. They must publicize this 24 x 7. On the economy,
they have a winning record of success to run on. On security/foreign
policy, they must get a "SHADOW GOV'T" together NOW and publicize
THEIR policy strategy to the American people. In the UK, the conservatives
who have been so long out of power have a "SHADOW CABINET" which
is recognized by the British media and reported on. The people in the "SHADOW
CABINET" are listed in all newspapers and on online newspaper
sites. The newspaper The Guardian has it listed with names, Internet
links,
even their biographies on http://politics.guardian.co.uk/conservatives/page/o,9067,635175,00.html.
There is a "Shadow Leader of the House of Commons and House of
Lords",
and "Shadow" Secretaries for all of the Cabinet offices.
Well, this is exactly what the Democrats in Washington DC need to do.
They
need to start ACTING like responsible, capable Executive Branch officers
who can be relied upon to offer a CLEAR ALTERNATIVE to the Bushites.
Maybe then, the public would really listen and weigh alternatives.
Right now, Dubya has 100 percent of the public's attention. The Democrats
need
a way to get heard. They're not doing enough to get heard.
A "SHADOW GOV'T" of Democrats could be the Rove-like PR gimmick
that wins the public's attention. It would require EXTRAORDINARY DISCIPLINE
among Democrats to assemble the "SHADOW GOV'T" and stick to
one, cohesive policy. That alternative voice, if it is unified, competent
and trustworthy, would attract Americans better than any of the 2004
candidate's campaign messages ever will.
