Jenna W. Bush: Following in Father's Footsteps?
The USO Scuttlebutt Monthly April 1, 2003
Houston - Patriotism is a way of life in Texas. American flags are on display all over the place. In fact, one can't cross a street anywhere within the city limits of Houston without seeing the Stars and Stripes on display. So it's no surprise to many Texans that Jenna Bush, the famous daughter of the President is rumored to have volunteered for duty in the Houston Air National Guard.
Following in her famous father's footsteps, Ms. Bush has allegedly signed up with the USO branch of the Texas Air National Guard at 0100 hours this morning, for the purpose of supporting our troops while serving in Houston.
"Volunteers for the Air Guard USO sure keeps ME feeling all patriotic-like" Texas fighter-pilot Kilroy was allegedly overheard saying while leaving Ms. Bush's USO Induction Cotillion and Bar-B-Que (see attached photo below).
The Texas Air National Guard has come under heavy criticism in the past, being known locally as the "Champaign Unit" because of the sons of rich and politically connected Texans who enlisted there during the Vietnam war. It's well known that their sole mission was flying sorties over the Texas Gulf Coast, ever vigilant against marauding Vietcong tactical air strikes.
The Houston Champaign unit is the only "Weekend Warrior" station to have its own USO Canteen attachment, and local legend is that the "Champaign Canteen" was actually founded by Ms. Bush's famous father, with only "a bottle of tequila, a senorita, and a golf cart"' on June 9, 1968*.
Historically, the USO was established to handle the on-leave recreation needs for our Armed Forces.
Although Ms. Bush was unavailable for interview, she is rumored to have volunteered for USO duty in a mistaken attempt to avoid the Draft Notice possibly sent to her as a prank by classmates at the University of Texas (also attached).
