Tonight, it's John McCain vs. the NFL, and the NFL will win out

You get to play Solomon: it's opening night of the NFL season with teams from the number one media market vs. a team from the nation's capital, and your network is broadcasting the game.

But it's also the night where the Republican presidential nominee makes his acceptance speech.

At 10 p.m. Eastern, when the game will likely still go on, what do you do? Cut away from the game? Go picture-in-picture? Join the speech in progress? Shift the speech to your cable news channel and show the speech in its entirety after the game?

Sarah Palin: a moose caught in headlights?

When Alaska Governor Sarah Palin was about to give her speech Wednesday night in St. Paul, Turner Classic Movies was about 15 minutes into "The Candidate" starring Robert Redford.

Now, TCM has no idea who John McCain would have picked for a running mate, but the channel did schedule the movie for when the Republican VP candidate would speak. Perhaps the channel's marketing people had ESP.

When Gov. Palin was finished with her speech, she looked all alone on a drab set, the huge video flag flying behind her. Nobody rushed on to meet her right away. No family, no supporters, nothing. The moment looked awkward. Waving, smiling, not knowing what was happening next. I almost wondered if she was asking herself: "What do we do now?" - the now famous line from the movie.

Sarah Palin's judgment is in focus, not Bristol Palin's

How much have you thought about John McCain in the last few days? How much has the average voter thought about John McCain in the last few days?

Not much, I would imagine. After all, "Sarah Palin" has been on everyone's mind, deflecting criticism away from McCain. Anything that deflects attention away from McCain is good for McCain.

The problem (or joyous occasion, depending on your vantage point) is that McCain's judgment showed in picking Sarah Palin as his running mate. So her questionable judgments reflect on his questionable judgment.

This has nothing to do with Bristol Palin and whether she is pregnant. This is about Sarah Palin and only Sarah Palin.

I really don't care if Trig is Bristol's child or Sarah's child or whether Bristol is currently pregnant by a boy who doesn't want kids. And for those on the right-wing who are using Bristol's situation to attack the left should know this has nothing to do with a teenage pregnancy.

Sarah Palin jumped full force into U.S. House GOP primary, but her candidate may not win

There has been a lot of talk about Sarah Palin and her influence as Governor of Alaska. But there is one area where she has tried to make an impact that has been virtually ignored by the press.

If you didn't know who Sarah Palin was a week ago, you may not know who Sean Parnell is. I wrote about Parnell in his quest to defeat longtime incumbent Don Young in the Republican Party primary on August 26.

On the same day Ted Stevens got 63 percent of the vote in the primary, despite being under indictment, the Young-Parnell race ended up being too close to call. Currently, Young is up by 151 votes but there are more than 25,000 absentee and questioned ballots to be counted.

What does this have to do with Sarah Palin? Well, Parnell is Alaska's lieutenant governor, and Palin pushed very hard to get Parnell to win the primary. Why? Well, Don Young is 75 and under investigation for his ties to Anchorage-based VECO Corporation, the Feds are looking into possible bribes, illegal gratuities, or unreported gifts.

If Young ends up winning the primary, two things appear clear. The Republicans will likely lose that seat to the Democrats, and Palin will look like she couldn't even deliver on an intra-party squabble. Technorati Tags:

Does Sarah Palin know how many countries she has visited?

from nationalatlas.gov

One benefit of Sarah Palin's nomination is that we are learning more about Alaska. Well, other than Ted Stevens (indicted) and Don Young (investigated) are the state's senior politicians.

But we are also realizing what we don't know.

Steve Doocy, "Fox and Friends"

"But the other thing about her, she does know about international relations because she is right up there in Alaska right next door to Russia."
Cindy McCain on ABC-TV
"...the experience that she comes from is what she's done in government, and remember, Alaska is the closest part of our continent to Russia."

Let's help those two and anyone else with misguided geographic problems. Juneau is the capital of Alaska, where the governor works. The city is in the southeastern part of the state, situated within the Tongass National Forest. The forest shares its eastern border with the province of British Columbia, Canada.

Many missing elements from the GOP last night, including current Republican politicians

I watched an Oscar-winning performance last night. No, not Heath Ledger in "The Dark Knight" but Fred Thompson as Fred Thompson in "Rally around the Old Guy."

This wasn't a Thompson we saw during his hiccup of a presidential campaign. As I was watching his speech last night, I figured out why that was. Yes, we all made jokes about his need for naps, but there was something different.

Why Gustav greatly benefits John McCain

Yes, it's likely tacky to talk about the impact of Gustav on the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, and on the subsequent McCain/Palin ticket. But we live in a political reality that isn't always pretty or politically correct, so here we go.

Let's start with the speeches. George W. Bush and Dick Cheney were scheduled to speak Monday night. And they didn't. Yes, they could have rallied Republicans. But people other than Republicans would have sliced and diced the speech, exposing it to many forces including, but not limited to, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. The last thing Republicans really want is public speeches from Bush and Cheney. After all, Cheney wasn't originally going to speak, and then suddenly he was. Overall: plus for the Republicans.

Then there are the speeches from John McCain and Sarah Palin. After the eloquent speeches from many Democrats last week, including Barack Obama and Joe Biden, the expectations and pressure were high for the Republican nominees. Well, now, the speeches (if they happen) will be low-key, and less focus will be spent on the speeches. Without the Gustav issue, the speeches from McCain and Palin would have seemed weak. Overall: huge plus for the Republicans.

John McCain's pick of Sarah Palin looks sudden and panicked -- an example of his leadership decisions?

John McCain made a bold choice, a choice I wasn't sure he could make. But it's also a cynical choice. McCain wasn't searching for a vice president; he was searching for a symbol: working class family (to deflect attention away from his and Cindy's background) and gender (to recruit Hillary Clinton supporters).

Barack Obama made a choice on who could best govern. John McCain made a choice based on who would best win.

Barack Obama shows us and the undecided a clear distinction in the presidential race

We heard a lot of speeches this week, and on Thursday night, we had a few of them on a football field. A completely sold out crowd that filled a high-capacity NFL stadium. And the crowd got what it wanted.

Usually when the pundits speak is the time to get up and go for a glass of water or finally use the bathroom. But I was curious as to what their reaction would be. I didn't watch FOX News, but the pundits I saw really liked the speech.

The force, the grandeur, the simplicity and directness -- it was all there for Obama.
