If you watch only one news video today, make it Wolf Blitzer's recent interview with Vice President Dick Cheney (transcript). I am not a huge fan of Blitzer, but the interview yesterday was incredibly revealing. In it we see Dick Cheney coming unglued. The mask is off Vice President as he expresses with no uncertain terms his contempt and disdain for journalists, the democratic process, the American people, and anything vaguely resembling the truth.

FOX News' John Gibson recently ran a segment on what he termed Barack Obama's "dirty little secret"--that Obama is a cigarette smoker. This is a published fact, by the way, as it is mentioned in the Senator's two best-selling books and in a recent New Republic article. But, Gibson ran with the particular "dirty secret" framing anyway, weaving it into a five minute segment with such insightful questions as whether Obama could keep his smoking a "secret" and whether Obama's "secret" would hinder his Presidential campaign. The first and most noticeable framing issue in the ISG Report is the almost complete absence of the word "freedom."

Whereas "freedom" has been repeated and repeated by President Bush just about every time he talks about his policy in Iraq, the new report from the Iraq Study Group avoids this word.

Today, when I turned on the television, I heard Secretary of Homeland Security, Michael Chertoff, explain that a terror plot had been foiled in Britain -- which would have involved the use of liquid explosives carried onto planes. In response, Chertoff passed a new regulation banning certain liquid and gel items in airplane carry-on luggage on all U.S. flights. The video shown repeatedly in the background featured a woman at airport security tossing a tube of toothpaste into a garbage can.
