Independence Day ... What Does It Really Mean ... It's All In The Language
MS. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON
BuzzFlash,
"I am always sorry when any language is lost, because languages are the pedigrees of nations." -- Samuel Johnson, in Boswell's Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides, September 18, 1773.
Yes, I think we could agree that it is in the language. Where else could so many meanings belong to so many words, especially in American English, which has evolved from many languages due to US immigration, however, during the days of settling this country (after taking it from those who first owned it, the American Indians), they advertised around the world and gave incentives for people to emigrate here. Today, that language regarding immigration in this country sounds very different, doesn't it?
We Americans are celebrating our "Independence," while occupying another country, and how many of us still wonder why they keep killing our military and National Guard? It's been referred to by Bush as delivering democracy (who else, but Bush and his supporters could think of delivering democracy with a bomb attached - another, but bigger bang for independence, eh?) . . . and Bush and his supporters were willing to murder hundreds of thousands of innocent people, and displace millions of people to do it. Not to mention the cost of the fraud involved, the utter hypocritical, and complete incompetence . . . or was it? Again, it's the language.
So many innocent lives taken, without any justice, at the oily hands of a treasonous Bush GOP greed-filled empire and the worst part is that they are still using and abusing that power after eight years of deadly folly.
I find it hard to celebrate a day of independence, with a clear conscience, when this country is fighting for no reason in Afghanistan and Iraq. Afghanistan, no reason to keep killing those people, and the US, under the Bush military, has stayed there until the Taliban because good enough to put up a much better fight, in the same way that the US in Iraq, saw to it that those who wanted to protect their homeland from invaders, after so many months, were finally armed and able to fight back.
However, what is really different? July 4 has been a national holiday since the Declaration of Independence was signed on that day in 1776, and for almost another hundred years, people celebrated that holiday while those who were enslaved looked on . . . today, under the violent Republican government, those people who can't speak English, those who are of a religion that isn't respected or tolerated by this Bush Republican government, surely don't feel very free when the big guy media constantly keeps them on the front page (Muslims), and places are being raided today, adults and their children are being separated (Mexicans) . . . innocent people who risked their lives to make a better living for their families are being treated like enemies, unarmed enemies, the kind the Bush GOP like best. It's not their fault, these poor people, these Mexicans, US companies have been getting away with this for the last half of the last century, while US government turned its back until every election year, but in the end, . . . the innocent, the poor and the powerless will be the ones who suffer, especially under a violent regime such as the Bush GOP that has been allowed to run amuck.
Today, many of us Americans want freedom from our own government. How long before American citizens are locked up for opposing Bush Republican views, I wonder. Today, the Iraqi people want freedom from the US because their government is still ruled or controlled by the Bush GOP White House, even though Bush and his administration say they are not.
It's all in the language isn't it . . . the idea of freedom. How many people feel free or safe in their heart under the Bush GOP? (Remember our US intelligence worked before 911, and Bush refused to warn the American people or the airlines after he had 3 months of warnings; so with that knowledge, how could any American trust this Bush GOP regime or any GOP supporter with our safety? How could anyone trust a government who has killed our own based on lies?) And how many people in Afghanistan and Iraq feel free. The word freedom today in the US, under a Bush GOP dictatorial regime, means whatever they want it to mean . . . we all want our children to be proud of this nation . . . when we are the enslavers, the intolerant . . . we no longer represent independence, liberty, or a working democracy here at home or around the world.
"When the legislative and executive powers are united in the same person, or in the same body of magistrates, there can be no freedom." -- Montesquieu, Spirit of the Laws. 1750.
People knew that hundreds of years ago, and we still don't have control of our own government, which means we can't control the future of this nation as a peaceful example of leadership around the world, and offer a better life, longer life, for future generations. We Americans have let our forefathers down by allowing the continuance of such treasonous behavior these past thirty years, and then celebrate as if we are what they tell us we are . . . an example of independence and freedom. The worst sign of this hypocrisy is if we Americans can tune in and watch Bush give such a speech carried on national TV in celebration of this day . . .
May every American citizen who believes in the language of our Constitution, Bill of Rights, Declaration of Independence, and the Gettysburg Address, where the enslaved people had to witness celebrations of independence for over a hundred years, and then some . . . understand that until we make drastic changes in our government, and bring back law and order into US government . . . there will always be another invasion/occupation around the world (over 800 US bases around the world, costing money while Americans go without healthcare, and for what) by tyrants who have nothing to fear . . . they use our citizens to fight for them, they use most of our tax dollars for military killing machines, and they use our laws and judicial appointments to escape prosecution. That's what freedom means today in the dear ole US of A.
Keep the masses busy . . . keep them afraid, keep them shopping, keep them struggling, keep them poor, keep them out of jobs, keep them busy just trying to survive, keep them intolerant of their fellow Americans, their neighbors . . . while the elite class of the Bush GOP plunder and rape the world, including our own land without fear of justice or US law. Now, that's what the Bush GOP thinks of as freedom and independence. And, know what, without impeachment and prosecutions . . . so far they're right.
Just a thought,
Thanks BuzzFlash,
Shirley Smith
