T. Boone Pickens [1] is a conservative Texas oil billionaire who, today, is launching an initiative [2] to promote a national push for energy independence by developing "cleaner, cheaper and domestic energy resources." We saw the first ad he aired on national tv early Tuesday morning on MSNBC.
Pickens says he's not doing this to make money. He is, however, a big wind farm investor. He is zeroing in on wind farms as the key resource for generating electricity and on natural gas as the prime resource to develop for use in vehicles.
Skeptics abound.
But the other possibility is that Pickens wants to be the conservatives' answer to Al Gore -- in other words, a private citizen who can mobilize public sentiment to achieve a huge public good.
This is a developing story. Pickens hopes to influence everyday Americans and the Republican and Democratic presidential candidates on the energy issue. Here's his presentation summarizing his plan:
