A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT

Ohio Democratic Party

"The Paris Hilton of Politics"

McCain Compares Campaign's Early Money Struggles to the Economic Problems Facing Youngstown

Today in Youngstown, a city hit hard by unfair trade agreements, economic downturns, and the mortgage crisis, John McCain actually compared his campaign's early money struggles due to wasteful and extravagant spending to the economic challenges facing residents of Youngstown.

McCain's prepared remarks said:

"As I recall, a few pollsters even declared my campaign a hopeless cause, and there was no margin of error to soften the blow.

But a person learns along the way that if you hold on - if you don't quit no matter what the odds - sometimes life will surprise you....

I bring up all this because the men and women of Youngstown know what it feels like to be counted out. You've been written off a few times yourselves, in the competition of the market. You know how it feels to hear that good things are happening in the American economy - they're just not happening to you."

"John McCain is truly the Paris Hilton of politics," said Doug Kelly, Executive Director of the Ohio Democratic Party. "The husband of a beer heiress has displaced the daughter of a hotel magnate as the new grand champion of simultaneously ignoring and insulting working people."

The difference between Youngstown and McCain couldn't be starker:

* Youngstown is a working class city; John McCain is one of the richest members of the Senate.

* McCain's plans shred the safety net for Youngstown; McCain's safety net, his wife, is worth $100 million.
* Youngstown has been hit hard by the foreclosure crisis and home owners are feeling no sympathy from the bank; John McCain somehow received a very sympathetic $4 million unsecured loan to prop up his bankrupt campaign.

"John McCain's attempt to compare a poorly-managed campaign budget to the increasing demands on a family's budget shows Americans the bubble he lives in," said Kelly.

Paris Hilton starred in the Fox network show, The Simple Life, about two wealthy socialites struggling to understand and be part of the lives of working-class families.

Her work in that series gained her "out-of-touch" icon status, spring-boarding her past former President George H. W. Bush's fascination with a simple supermarket scanner in 1992.
