Good ol' Dubya, that swell, fun, guy, the ex-cheerleader and guy you want to have a beer with. He clowns, he's funny. And did you catch his dance in Africa, by the way? That was a hoot.
Yesterday he was dancing on the White House steps till John McCain showed up to receive his endorsement. But that little dance may just be George's nonverbal body language way of signaling that he's no lame duck. "He-he-he." Let's take it as such, and take a peak at how busy his administration still is:
Iraq: They're pushing their argument that Bush can enter into a long-term security accord with Iraq without Congressional approval [1] -- thereby hog-tieing the next administration. They said yesterday that the 2002 resolution authorizing the use of force against Saddam Hussein (now dead) gives them authority to promise today's Iraqi leadership whatever they want -- into infinity.
Contempt: The White House, now with AG Mukasey's blessing, refuses to respond to Congressional subpoenas [2] calling for testimony from Harriet Miers and Josh Bolten about the purge of US attorneys that Al Gonzales allowed or orchestrated. As Speaker Pelosi said today on a conference call with Internet publishers, they have "completely ignored the system of checks and balances."
FISA Extension and Immunity: The White House and RNC are fighting tooth and nail to keep hidden their spying on Americans since 2000. [2] Again in Speaker Pelosi's words, "It's so fundamental to democracy. It shows you how frivolous they are."
There's much more, of course. The point is, let's not take our eye off Dubya or the hard workers he has in his administration. Even as Bush is grabbing cute press moments and seeming to anticipate his upcoming days of leisure, the Veep surely remains busy at work, in some behind-the-scenes and undisclosed location. Those two and their legions of workers still have 319.49 days in office [3] as of this writing. We need to watch what they're working on and give our full support to those in Congress and the Courts who are trying to hold the line.
