Welcome back to the Buzzflash GOP Hypocrite of the Week.

This is our preface to this week's award: U.S. Congressman "Fossella, who was elected in 1997, is an arch-conservative with close ties to the Bush White House, which may make it more difficult for him to recover."

A U.S. representative who is tied at the hip with the Bushevik is the BuzzFlash GOP Hypocrite of the Week? How could that happen and what does Fossella have to recover from?

Well, we'll turn to the Rupert Murdoch New York Post for the full story:

Rep. Vito Fossella, a married congressman from Staten Island, this morning admitted to having an out-of-wedlock child with a former Air Force officer with whom he carried on a longstanding extramarital affair.

The stunning admission comes exactly a week after the Republican politician was busted for drunk driving in Alexandria, Va. presumably on the way to visit his mistress and their young child.

"I have had a relationship with Laura Fay, with whom I have a three-year-old daughter," Fossella, 43, said in a statement.

Fay, 45, is a retired Air Force intelligence officer who may have met Fossella when she served as a congressional liaison from the Pentagon.
Oh, how rare, a Republican who is caught for drunk driving and also has an extramarital affair -- and a child out of wedlock to boot!

Of course, what is the reaction of the GOP kingmaker on Staten Island, the district that Fossella represents? "But the godfather of the Staten Island GOP said yesterday he will continue to back Fossella's re-election bid. "I'm going to be with Vito -- no matter what," said Guy Molinari, the longtime GOP boss, former congressman, and borough president.

Oh, how forgiving the Republican bosses are if you are a GOP "moral values" adulterer and drunk driver. If you are a Democrat and blink your left eye, you are a moral heathen, though.

So Congressman Fossella, you are the BuzzFlash GOP Hypocrite. But we got news for you. Mr. Molinari may be forgiving, but the word is that your 43-year-old wife may be consulting a divorce lawyer. "She's not going to be standing by her man," the source told the Post yesterday.

Sorry, Vito, gross hypocrisy won't lose you a favored place at the Republican dinner table, but it may lose you a family.

Poor taste

Rupert Murdoch's New York Post is hardly more than "fish wrap". So, commenting on the writing style of its writers would be no more enlightening than suggecting the that the septic tank stinks. Pointing out the Republican Congressman Fossella's hypocrisy is justifiable. But I must take issue with the slam labeling of the innocent 3 year old child. There was a time when such a child, the innocent offspring of an illicit affair was cruelly stigmatized with the label of "bastard". As a society we have become (as least liberal/progressives have) become more compassionate. Even the the New York Post used the slightly less pejorative "out of wedlock". There are thousands, perhaps millions of children born to unmarried couples who quite often do not remain committed to each other. The innocent child of the couplings and uncouplings are more often than not identified by referencing their biological father or mother. I do not know much about Republican Congressman Fossella, but if he is as characterized by BuzzFlash a "bushie"he is morally and intellectually challenged and should be castigated for his DUI. However, to take the fish wrap's "...presumably on the way to visit his mistress and their young child..." and then produce a lede in which the presumption becomes fact and the the child becomes instead of out-of-wedlock, "illegitimate", is "over the top". There are so many neocon hypocrits out there - there really is no need to take cheap shots and victimize, stigmatize their innocent 3 year old children. I think you "shit the bed" on this one. Unfortunately, so does Bush, Cheney, Rice, Mukasey, and... the FBI, ONI, CIA, MCIA, NSA, DIA,MI6, MOSSAD, AIPAC, and any number of telcom companies and ISP...
