John McCain keeps upsetting rock artists by using their songs without permission

Heart, Jackson Browne, Foo Fighters, and so much more. K-Tel Records presents "Songs used by the John McCain campaign without permission." All the classic hits by the original artists, none of whom want to be associated with John McCain.

This collection might sell really well. Jackson Browne ("Running On Empty"), Heart ("Barracuda"), Foo Fighters ("My Hero"), and John Mellencamp ("Our Country" and "Pink Houses") makes for a nice set of music.

But do you think that is all to the collection? Not even close. How about Van Halen's "Right Now" and Frankie Valli's "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" (used as a parody for McCain). Let's not forget the Orleans' classic "Still the One," written by John Hall, or rather I should say, Rep. John Hall (D-NY), mis-used by McCain in 2008 AND George W. Bush in 2004.

And if you act now, you will get bonus tracks such as Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down" (used by Bush in 2000 against the wishes of the artist), Boston's "More than a Feeling" (Mike Huckabee in 2008). And you will get an extra special bonus track, we have Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA" used with no irony by Ronald Reagan, whose team paid attention to the title of the song, but not the lyrics.

John McCain may be doing more to revive the careers of classic rock artists than a triple-play weekend on the local rock station.

And it hasn't been all bad for McCain, who did use the Beach Boys song, "Barbara Ann," after he revived interest in that song with his "Bomb Iran" parody song. I don't think the Beach Boys objected. McCain also used "Johnny B. Goode" by Chuck Berry. The rock pioneer isn't a fan of McCain -- he's pulling for Obama -- but hasn't objected to the use of his song.

To be fair, Barack Obama used the Sam and Dave song "Soul Man" until Sam Moore asked the campaign to stop using the song.

We have Bill Clinton to thank for all this, with his pick of "Don't Stop" by Fleetwood Mac as the official campaign theme song. The group had no problem having their song adopted as the official song; the group even played the Inaugural Ball for the new president, a remarkable achievement since the group reunited for the event at a time of turmoil for the band.

And this trend will keep going - wonder what Sarah Palin's playlist will look like in 2012.

Presidential candidates are going to use songs, ideally classic rock songs, but they have to learn to get used to asking permission from artists. It could be argued that perhaps, technically, the campaigns don't have to do this. But given the huge amounts of negative publicity that McCain has received, and one lawsuit from Jackson Browne, certainly approaching an artist might be sound advice. Technorati Tags:

mccain using songs without artist's permission

I could be mistaken but I think most of the songs we are talking about are licensed through ASCAP, which would make getting the individual artists permission to use these songs unnecessary. I think that as long as the ASCAP licensing fees have been paid, he is free to use these songs at his rallies. Can someone confirm whether or not this is true?

Song for Palin/McCain(the Real terrorists) in 2012

I think in 2012 Palin/McCrook's SONG(who's following in the footsteps of Bushwacker will be "I Couldnt Sleep At All Last Night'(Because I was Tossin and Turnin All Night) --the 1960s song of the past..remember that one. they will remember how they lost in 2008 thanks to their extremist views and their hate-filled rallies. Palin will "maybe" remember calling Obama "Pallin around with terrorists" when the opposite is what's true. Remember:McCain,Palin and Bush are pals and Bush is the known world terrorist..remember how he threatened to bomb Iraq and also bomb Iran and move aircraft carriers near Iran. When you issue threats like Bush has done to other countries then Bush becomes the terrorist himself because what he has uttered was a "terroristic threat".It's so easy to figure it all out.McCain said he would follow Bush policies. Just remember when these people make a statement like that and issue terroristic threats to the world, it is them who are "palling around with the terrorists." NOT OBAMA !! But i dont want to sound redundant here at all. BUSH=MCCAIN=PALIN=ALL TERRORISTS..so now who's doin the "Palin around"? BTW:I sleep very well, THANK YOU !I dont have to toss and turn all night like Palin/Bush,McCrook do. GO OBAMA/BIDEN 2008 !!! (even from an avowed atheist)

Why Ask When You Can Just Take....

That is the reTHUGlicans for you - any of them. But what I don't get is why they don't use gospel standards- it would help camoflage their anti-Christian actions, and please the KKKristian KKKrazies. Onward Christian Soldiers might just be catchy enough for them. And The Old Rugged Cross might appeal to the dual audience - racists for the imagery and kkkrazies for the ... well, same reason. They could use that old song "Everybody Run, The Homecoming Queen Has a Gun" for sarah-talliban. That song was done by someone that didn't have a very great career so I'm sure she would love to get a little play for it.

How Hard Could It Be?

It shouldn't be that difficult to contact the particular artist and ask permission to use the song in question. Why don't they do it? Probably because the artist would refuse.

Rock song for McCain?

Well, I think Britney Spears is a Republican. At least, she came off that way in Fahrenheit 911. So, I'm sure McCain will be able to get permission to use "Oops, I Did It Again".

On a related matter, in 1980, during the Iranian hostage crisis, a New Orleans rock group, Vince Vance and the Valiants, had a hit with "Bomb Iran" (sung to the tune of "Barbara Ann"). Why isn't the media yelling, "Plagirism"?

Rev - b/c you can't really plagarize a parody...?

The song "Barbara Ann" belongs to The Beach Boys, who don't object to McCain's use of it. The parody (which I assume McCain must have heard - it's not the kind of joke I think he's capable of coming up w/on his own, honestly) is a fair use of copyrighted material (unless Vince Vance & the Valiants got The Beach Boys' permission, like Weird Al does?), but doesn't really belong to them. Even if the use somehow does, who's to say THEY weren't delighted to have John McCain reviving it...?

Nincompoop: The Beach Boys did not write the song, "Barbara Ann". Get off the internet and stay off.
