Tonight, it's John McCain vs. the NFL, and the NFL will win out

You get to play Solomon: it's opening night of the NFL season with teams from the number one media market vs. a team from the nation's capital, and your network is broadcasting the game.

But it's also the night where the Republican presidential nominee makes his acceptance speech.

At 10 p.m. Eastern, when the game will likely still go on, what do you do? Cut away from the game? Go picture-in-picture? Join the speech in progress? Shift the speech to your cable news channel and show the speech in its entirety after the game?

If you aren't a football fan or a political fan, you have no dilemma. Of course, you can watch the speech on C-SPAN, PBS, CBS, ABC, FOX, CNN, Fox News Channel, BBC America, and MSNBC.

But what will NBC do?

The network already got the NFL to move up the kickoff from 8:30 p.m. to 7:07 p.m. (all times Eastern Daylight time). NBC says it won't switch away from the game, yet will cover the speech.

McCain and the Republicans could have avoided all of this, of course, if they weren't so adamant about a September convention.

There is a distinct possibility McCain will wait for NBC, possibly adding tension or boredom to the floor since they may plan for the speech around a football game.

Of course, Barack Obama gave his acceptance speech last week in a football stadium, combining two American pastimes.

The league offers that the average game last season lasted 3 hours and 3 minutes, a figure difficult to duplicate in a nationally televised game, which usually has more commercials and more TV timeouts.

So if John McCain is waiting in St. Paul, it's because the Giants and the Redskins are still battling it on the gridiron. Even a politician knows to not interfere in the NFL.

Interesting question

I guess we have our answer at this point. From "tvbythenumbers.com" ... "The final night of the Republican National Convention drew 7.4% more average broadcast viewers than the Democrat’s final night, with 21.158 million average among NBC, ABC, CBS and Univision vs. 19.695 million for the Democrats last Thursday." Everyone better start understanding that there are many questions about Obama that are not being answers and that the general public is very curious and intrigued by Palin. Attacking Palin is not the answer. The focus has to be on providing 1. specifics as to policy proposals, and 2. addressing publicly why the Democratic controlled House and Senate spent two years arguing with the Republicans instead of offering solutions to the issues facing the country. This should be a Democratic victory in a walk. Instead, it appears to me that the Republicans have built the positive momentum. Obama is still going to win, I believe, but it's his and the party's to lose and it seems to me that every stone is being turned to figure how to do just that.

Game or Speech?

That is a tough choice. Lets see, watching guys trying to kill each other, or listining to a guy who wants to be president who has no problem trying to kill all of us. HMMMMMMMMMMMMM Maybe I will read a book. Mike

Game vs Speech

I'll be playing poker.

The 2007 New England Patriots had 18 Wins and 1 Giant Loss

Just as the NY Giants are the reigning best team in American football, Barack Obama is the best candidate of the two exclusive American political parties. Most Republican Americans would rather watch a speech by Ron Paul than the fossilized John McCCain. Likewise most Democrat Americans would rather hear a speech by Bill Clinton than a speech by newcomer Barack Obama. Having said that, the 2008 John McCain is to the 2007 New England Patriots as the 2008 Barrack Obama is to the 2007 NY Giants. Would you want to watch a speech from some whiney-assed loser or would you rather see the Super Bowl Champion NY Giants kick some Redskin ass? Wow, that's a real tough choice, unless you're Sarah Heath Palin, who has her knee pads ready for all occasions, especially for those hockey games that her son played/plays in (Please: no biting Ms. pit bull with lip stick).
