Like RFK, Obama is an inspirational leader, but we must also lead ourselves to get things done

About 20,000 people gathered together in a hockey arena, had to go through Secret Service requirements to get in, wait around for some time, and then watch a 30-minute political speech. And there was about 15,000 people who watched on giant screens from outside the arena.

This is not a typical political experience.

Could you imagine Michael Dukakis, Bob Dole, George H.W. Bush, or Walter Mondale stirring this kind of enthusiasm and crowd?

The traditionally non-political element of our society, a rather large group, given the percentages of people who go out and vote, are joining in a process in part because they are excited about a candidate for president of the United States. And that candidate is Barack Obama.

Bill Clinton in 1992 is the only parallel in terms of excitement in my lifetime. But the obvious comparison is Robert F. Kennedy in 1968. It is significant that, the day after Obama officially became the presumptive nominee for president, is the day 40 years ago that Kennedy won the California primary.

I'm not trying to compare Obama to RFK literally. There are many intangibles where there is a difference between the two situations and the two men.

But there are some similarities.

"If there is one lesson of this political year," he began, "it is that the people of this country wish to move away from the politics which led to an endless war abroad and to increasing unrest in our own country."
"The divisions, the violence, the disenchantment with our society -- the divisions, whether it's between blacks and whites, between the poor and the more affluent, or between age groups, or on the war in Vietnam -- is that we can start to work together. We are a great country, an unselfish country and a compassionate country."
Robert F. Kennedy - June 4, 1968

That sounds familiar.

And, like Kennedy, it hasn't been how Obama says what he says that draws 19,000 people for a 30-minute speech. It is what he says.

The assassination of Robert F. Kennedy is sad on many levels not just because a great leader was taken far before his time. The tragic death of RFK appeared to be the final straw. This is quite understandable given the April assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. and, of course, the November 1963 assassination of John F. Kennedy.

The strong leadership that this country needed did not come forward after RFK's death. This isn't a judgment, just an observation. Instead, we were left in the hands of leaders such as Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, and George W. Bush.

What I really enjoyed about Obama's speech last night was a theme he has been running throughout his campaign: that 19,000 people do not crowd into a hockey arena because of Barack Obama; they are there because they can take charge of their own destiny if they work hard for it.

"But at the end of the day, we aren't the reason you came out and waited in lines that stretched block after block to make your voice heard. You didn't do that because of me or Senator Clinton or anyone else. You did it because you know in your hearts that at this moment -- a moment that will define a generation -- we cannot afford to keep doing what we've been doing. We owe our children a better future. We owe our country a better future. And for all those who dream of that future tonight, I say -- let us begin the work together. Let us unite in common effort to chart a new course for America."

Barack Obama -- June 3, 2008

Americans crave strong leadership, but when they get it, they respond by doing the hard work needed to improve our lives.

And no offense to Bill Clinton, but we haven't had that type of leadership in this country since, well, 1968. Barack Obama is the closest we have come to that level of leadership. Strong leadership can inspire, but we, as citizens, still have to take responsibility ourselves to make this country better.

Obama/RFK

Obama is no RFK. Obama ran an ugly, racist, sexist, hate filled campaign. No one with any self-respect would vote for him. He is the democrats version of George Bush. Obama is a media creation, a sound byte and photo op. Democrats criticized republicans for voting for George Bush and now are turning around and voting for the same type of politican. Obama ran the same type of campain as George Bush. He takes no responsibility. Democrats figured they would use the same playbook Republicans used and it is working. Democrats have become Republicans.

First four commenters have a chip on their shoulders.

No one who makes it to the national political level, that Obama and Clinton occupy, are uncompromised. It goes with the territory. All are prey to moneyed, special interests under our flawed system. But stating the obvious doesn't solve problems. Apparently, the first four commenters didn't read your essay. It won't be solely up to Obama to do the things they are wanting Obama to do, it will also be up to us, not including the aforementioned chip-on-the-shoulder commenters. Obama will provide the leadership and we will provide the muscle. If Obama strays from promises made during the campaign, we will be there to hold his feet to the fire. This didn't happen with Clinton. After his election we all went about our business thinking that he would do the right things. And how did that go? When the dark force/Repubs went into attack mode, Clinton caved. It was called triangulation. Without support he had little choice. The difference between then and now is that there is a strong progressive infrastructure in place. Most of us have learned the lesson, although not all considering the previous comments. However, regardless what the "sour grapes clintonistas" and discredited "rightwing nut cons" wish, there will be many who will be there to support Obama or to take him to task if/when he weakens under pressure. Meanwhile, the clintonistas and republicons will continue to whine and stew while accomplishing nothing.

Feet to the fire

Holding Obama's "feet to the fire"? Sure we will. "When the dark force/Repubs went into attack mode" ALL THE DEMOCRATS CAVED! Including Obama and Hillary who are not holding the "dark forces" responsible nor accountable. What "strong progressive infrastructure"? You mean Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid? Obama will do what all major U.S. politicians do. They will use you and your vote. Then they will flip you off. And yes, we have a chip on our shoulders. It's the one that got there after the Democrats won in 2006 and had the electorate go screw itself. How many times do you have to bend over to finally understand?

Ah, vtjozef and Neva Stolz - Frothing Clinton-Lieberman-McCain

Apologists at their most disgusting! Well, outside of Yman and ThomasM, of course....

I wouldn't take their word after their constant ad hominem attacks on any Obama supporter, or anybody who in fact doesn't fall down on their backs w/their legs in the air for Racist Sleaze Hillary, if they said the Sun Rises in the East. Why bother w/them on something important? We all know they're praying for a McCain-Lieberman ticket, anyway....

How many times ...

... did you vote for that "Racist Sleaze Hillary" again? What a complete dupe, huh?

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahaahahahahaha!

Inspirational????

Maybe he inspires hatred and racism! He seems to use both quite a lot or have his so called supporters do it. Now he wants the party back together. Too little to late. Some have left and more will leave. We don't need another George Bush in the White House and Obama is just like George. Instead of comparing McCain to Bush you should be using Obama as a match! The media has given this election to Obama, lets see what they do in November. Now his supporters are saying he was sent by God! Lord have mercy on us all! (The corrupt politician from Illinois, they do know how to get the most from the tax payers when they get elected!)

Ask not

Ask not how he will balance the budget. Ask not how he will close the trade deficit. Ask not how he will stop the spending of social security money on things other than social security. Ask not how he will make America energy independent. Ask not who gets the 10 trillion dollars of Iraq oil if the U.S. leaves. Ask not about the USS Liberty that Israel attacked (false flag?). Write in Ron Paul

Bull hockey

Inspiratrional? You mean rock star with preacher delivery, an empty suit with a good PR campaign, hand claps and high five like a basketball star. That's not inspiration. It's marketing. It isn't leadership. Leadership is presenting solutions to pressing and hard issues. When is Obama going to end the Iraq war? What is the plan? When is Obama going to push through single payer universal health care? How is Obama going to pursue those criminals in the Bush administration responsible for the illegal and immoral war/occupation of Iraq? HE'S NOT! That's leadership for you. What is Obama's plan for energy independence? THERE IS NONE! Like a rock concert, we swoon and sway to the rhythm of our fake butane encore lighters, flames that fail to enlighten us that the concoction we are adoring is corporate produced. Sure, sure, BF. The people are taking charge of their own destiny by crowding in to see Obama in a large gathering masterminded by the Madison Avenue crowd. Nonsense. Four years from now, when you realize you have been, once again, been taken in and duped, remember not to fall for the propaganda yet again. One can only dream.
