Who Barack Obama should NOT pick for vice president

America's hottest new game is who Barack Obama should pick to be his running mate in November. With apologies to Hillary Clinton (who likely isn't going to get the nomination) and John McCain (picks likely to be boring, almost Dan Quayle like), the focus is on Obama.

And there are many places to turn to speculate on who Obama will choose. Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, Bill Richardson, Joe Biden, and Kathleen Sebelius are among many good quality candidates.

But this is the Democratic Party, where good choices don't often get made. So Sen. Obama, while many people are giving you good advice on who to pick, I will give you advice on who not to pick. (These are my personal thoughts as a BuzzFlash staff member, but do not necessarily reflect the editorial opinion of BuzzFlash.)

-- Joe Lieberman. The temptation that Al Gore faced in 2000 led to Lieberman. At the time, I thought it was the worst pick of any VP candidate in the modern era. And this is back when Democrats still liked Lieberman. But Lieberman represents a defensive position. Do not pick a VP candidate because of a negative.

-- Sam Nunn. Nunn is respected on many levels, and his experience is tempting to have on the ticket. But Nunn is a bad choice simply because he is conservative, one of Lieberman's pitfalls. A conservative choice for VP is bad for several reasons: it doesn't energize the base, and if something happens to you, that person becomes president.

-- Chuck Hagel. Hagel or Ron Paul would be tempting on many levels, and in a different society, an odd choice could work. But they are still Republicans. If you want to incorporate Hagel into your administration, take that shot. But not as VP.

-- Jim Webb. In many circles, Webb is a popular choice to be on the list of those to pick. But he's too conservative, too off-the-cuff, and has been in the Senate even less than Obama. Democrats love the idea of picking off people just as they finally get to the big-time. It's like picking fruit before it reaches its true ripeness. We don't need green bananas for vice president.

-- Michael Bloomberg. Tempting choice, well respected, and gives an independent vibe. True Bloomberg was a Democrat until 2001 when he ran as a Republican, and he is now an Independent. But there is so much that we don't know about Bloomberg's politics. Would be good to draw independents, but doesn't energize the base, and it's difficult to pick someone who John McCain could also pick.

-- Geographic balance. The tradition of picking someone for geographic balance has almost become passe. Dick Cheney, John Edwards, Joe Lieberman, Jack Kemp, and Al Gore weren't picked for geographic balance. And you shouldn't go that route either. You end up with odd matchups such as JFK/LBJ and Michael Dukakis/Lloyd Bentsen.

-- Political expedience. Names such as Ted Strickland (Governor -- Ohio) and Tim Kaine (Governor -- Virginia) have been bandied about as possible candidates. No offense to either of them, but pick a VP based on who they are, not what short-term experience can be provided. If they fit other criteria, then they do offer an advantage. But don't pick them for that reason.

-- Someone who is uninspiring. Your VP pick should be a proven leader, ready to lead at a moment's notice. But it should also be someone with upbeat charisma, obviously not as much as you, but still someone who can be considered a leader. Tom Daschle and Richard Gephardt would, on many levels, fit your criteria. But they aren't inspiring. Daschle and Gephardt were at the top of the Senate and House, respectively, yet they are reminders that their leadership was ineffective. For all the criticism of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, they got a lot of things done to get the House and Senate back for the Democrats. And it's sad since Daschle and Gephardt would do an excellent job. It hurts to put Gephardt on this list. I like Gephardt, and thought he would have made a great president. William Kristol brought up his name on FOX on Sunday, but that isn't the reason. And it's not because Rupert Murdoch's New York Post told us Kerry would pick Gephardt in 2004. Gephardt should be a part of your administration, officially or unofficially, but not as vice president.

So who would you put on this list? Who shouldn't be the VP pick for Obama? Technorati Tags:

Perfect Obama VP choice

The obvious choice here would be Schwarzenegger. Think of it. Proven leader. Galvanizer of a state Barack lost. A Kennedy Republican (Yep, won't be Photoshopped anymore out of the Hyannis port summer picnic photo). What's that you say? Can't be President because of that Ich-war-geboren-in-Oesterreich Ding? No worries there. According to the Lines of Succession, it would go right to the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi. On second thought, I'm moving to Auckland!

VP Choice

Vice President names like Charlie Rose, Micheal Bloomberg, or Ted Turner come to mind. But they would not likely run. So you have another knowledgeable person in Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri. I started a Draft Claire for Governor in which we had over 75 team captains statewide in 2003. She instead became a US Senator two years later. Claire McCaskill was a prosecutor in Kansas City, a single mom while serving as state representative for 3 terms and then a State Auditor. Her knowledge of local, state, and Federal levels of governments and how they work is extremely important. There has likely never been a vice presidential candidate which such a record of service. She has become known as a center of the road legislator fighting for anti ear mark legislation and an accountability office for expenditures on the war. What she is most noticed for is that she has a pulse of the people that comes naturally and speaks out for the people when something is not in their best interest concerning government or important issues. Yes two inspiring candidates who bring out the best in people on the ticket sound real good. Steven L. Reed 1441 South Estate Ave. Springfield MO stevenlloydreed@hotmail.com

VP

Bill Richardson or Welsey Clark, Foreign policy credentials.

Listen to William Kristol

Listen to William Kristol very carefully, then do the exact opposite.

I Second Strinka response to Paper Raven

I agree I still hope that Hillary can hang in there and suspend her campaign on June 3rd and goes on to the convention. Here are a few good suggestions should Obama win the nomination since you want discourse. Why not Jessie Jackson or better yet Reverend Wright. Oh I forgot Obama is a politician and wants to win. Of course Obama is a god and Rev Wright is a prophet so they can make anything happen. He can pick anyone and still win because he has such karisma, charm and mesmirizing oratory. I hear he is coming to Florida to try to win us over. This is just too funny for words. Now he wants our vote in the fall. He didn't want it on January 29th and has stood proud and strong against Florida voters who voted overwhelmingly for Hillary. Good luck with that Mr Obama. I have never voted for a Republican but if Obama is on the top of the Democratic ticket I will use my vote as a protest for how Florida voters have been treated by Mr Obama and the DNC but never fear Mr Obama will still win because he is magic. You have nothing to fear because Obama Man is here.

"I have never voted for a

"I have never voted for a Republican but if Obama is on the top of the Democratic ticket I will use my vote as a protest for how Florida voters have been treated by Mr Obama and the DNC but never fear Mr Obama will still win because he is magic."

Leslie DeVane, you do have a flare for sarcasm, however you also seem to be saying you'd rather condemn the world to another four years of Republican idiocy to spite Obama.

First off, if you want to be pissed at losing your primary vote, be pissed at your state organization which decided to ignore party rules which were made for a reason.

Blaming Obama for it makes no sense. But then, neither does the rest of your post.

Mr Diggs

Mr Obama has stood firm that our vote should not count along with his campaign and supporters. I listen to them with their constant chiming of the chant of Florida broke the rules, they all agreed not to campaign, so I know this drill I have heard it over and over again like a broken record. As for my little itsy bitsy teeny tiny little vote rocking the world and condemning the world for four more years you only have a problem if there are many others out there that feel like I do. If that is the case then your guy has a bigger problem than me. Who did you vote for in 2000 and 2004. I voted for Gore and Kerry but did it matter. No Bush still got in there because everyone wanted to have a beer with him and look what you got. Did you vote for Bush? Just curious. This web site has constantly trashed Hillary Clinton, a member of the Democratic Party, so don't be surprised when her supporters are angry. Since Iowa the DNC has been wringing their hands and telling Hillary to get out of the race. Obama won Iowa by 2 points big deal. Her supporters have been ridiculed by this site and the press and his supporters and now they want us to join them on the bandwagon of unity. No thanks I will wait and walk to the polls in November and vote the way I choose and the chips can fall wherever they may. The world will still keep turning and survive because if we can survive 8 years of Dubya we can survive 4 more years of McCain. Can you really tell me what Mr Obama wants to accomplish when he wins? Specifically? I have listened and all I hear is hope and change and strangely enough that is all I hear from his supporters. What change and what hope?

You know, a lot of people

You know, a lot of people here have trash talked HRC. That's unfortunate because it allows the focus to be on that. Not everyone has. Indeed, HRC supporters have done their share of trashing Obama.

What Obama will accomplish time will tell. I do appreciate the tone he wants to bring and do believe him to be sincere about it. That alone could work a world of change.

What change? What hope? How about just turning this ship around. We'll see what he does. As far as i'm concerned, it's the day after january 20th, 2009, that our work really begins. It's our job to make our voices heard to tell him what change to make. If the left just goes back to sleep... well maybe he'll do what's right anyway.

Could I be wrong? Sure.

As for voting for a Republican out of protest... why not just vote for Nader? That vote won't leave a permanent stain on your soul.

As for your vote, you can be as bored with the facts as you want but the party made the rules and the Florida delegation broke them. Be angry at them.

Mr Diggs

I will vote for John McCain and I will not have a permanent stain on my soul. I am not worried about what eternity will bring me because of my vote. I do not have faith that Obama is going to make great changes either. He has accepted money from corporate America too and his speech in Philly was just made to save his campaign. He is not this country's only salvation. Also what are you so worried about? The Dems are going to be in the majority in the House and the Senate aren't they, or so they say, so how much mischief can McCain make with the Dems in control in Congress. Maybe they can step up and make the changes they have been promising and start passing bills that help the working class for a change and they could cut the funding for the war and with the majority they could override McCain's veto. Mr Obama would be there to step up to the challenge and really prove himself and take that real step and prove that he was against the war from the beginning by cutting funding and putting his vote out there on the table as proof of where he stands. He could even vote to override McCain's veto on the war. He could also really stand up to the oil, pharmacutical and banking lobbyists to help the common man. He can reach across the aisle and work with Republicans and show us. That way we know what we are getting instead of having to hope he makes a change and hope that he keeps his word on the war in Iraq. He can show us. He never has voted against war funding and he was not there to vote against the authorization bill so he has no real proof of where he stands, just words. Finally you didn't answer my question about Bush. Did you vote for him in 2000 or 2004? I guess I can assume the answer is yes. If that is the case you are the one that should feel guilty not me.

No Republicans as VP

While I would really like to see Chuck Hagel offered Secretary of Defense by Obama, we have a really long way to go before "unity" at the top is a good idea. VP under Obama should be a staunch progressive. Fiengold would be my first choice. Ken Duerksen Oxford, Ohio

VP

Russ Feingold on the ticket would compliment and round out Obama's populist reform message.

I used to think Hillary

I used to think Hillary Clinton was a good choice, but then she said offhandedly that she would obliterate a country that doesn't have nuclear weapons if it did a nuclear attack on a nation with which we, in fact, have no military alliance. To put it another way, she sounded like John Bolton heavily tranquilized. No, she's not a good choice, if only because she doesn't have sufficient command of the English language and command of language is indicative of overall intelligence. I can't claim Joe Biden is a great choice, but he'd be a better VP than Clinton and my money (not a large wager) would be on Biden. Of course we'd have to both make and put up with jokes about how clean and articulate Obama is, but that's a trifle. :)

Why Hillary Won't Be Veep: Bill Will Balk

Hillary Clinton as Barack Obama's running mate? No way. There's too much ill feeling between Obama and Clinton -- not Hillary, but Bill. Privately, Obama has never forgiven Bill Clinton for his disparaging remarks about him before and after the South Carolina primary back in January -- remarks that touched off a backlash against the Clinton campaign among black voters that has been snowballing ever since. And besides, does anyone seriously believe that Bill won't veto his wife becoming Obama's No. 2? My choice for Obama's veep? Bill Richardson.

AGAIN...

who knows who Ed Markey is??? I really think Obama needs to pick an unknown... someone like this guy.....

Better not be Mrs. Bill Clinton.

If she becomes veep, Obama's dead within six weeks. If he picks anyone other than a liberal Democrat I will stay home. Clark would be a great choice because he would destroy McCain on national security, which is the only thing he's got. And Clark is pretty progressive on most issues; more so than Hillary.

LOL! You know, I think that

LOL! You know, I think that having Hillary as VP would be a guarantee he wouldn't get bumped off! The last thing the right wing-nuts want is A Clinton president. They'd pull their hair out over the prospect of having to shoot two people!

But seriously... I think he should choose Mike Gravel. He's as liberal as you want and no one knows who the hell he is, thanks to the MSM.

I wouldn't stay home unless

I wouldn't stay home unless I also planned to put up a big banner in my yard that said, "I'm staying home, because the Obama chose as ineffectual sidekick someone who wasn't sufficiently liberal for me. Don't worry, I'm not going to harm myself or anything like that...." The ellipsis is a nice touch, don't you think?

Yes.

I do think. Apparently you don't.

LOL.....

Funny....as if it matters?????

Kucinich???

In my view, that would not be a ticket that would defeat McCain. You may not like Wes Clark or anyone with a military background but I think this election will wind up hinging on who America trusts to protect them from the "terrorists"...again. If Obama doesn't address this primal fear with a running mate that counters McCain's perceived strength in keeping the scary Muslims at bay, Democrats may well snatch defeat from the jaws of victory this November.

NO NO NO NO To Hillary

Obama doesn't need to saddle himself with the Billary circus. Can you imagine the Clintons plotting his downfall for 4 years. Not exactly an atmosphere to inspire trust. And Clinton is everything Obama is running against. Old politics, stale boomer thinking, divisiveness, greed and corporate power, ect. She would be the worst pick. And she brings nothing to the ticket. Nothing at all that he couldn't get from a better choice. I seriously doubt a man as savvy as Obama is going to pick Hillary anyway. I am thinking he will chose the best person for him and the job.

Obama

Dorothy Strinka I still have high hopes for Sen. Clinton, so really don't care about Obama's choice for VP!

Why

If you don't care then why bother commenting? You could have perhaps added to the discourse, but no then again I guess not.

Approps of Nothing in Particular

Olbermann had a great shot tonight - a picture of Lieberman w/the slugline "TURNCOAT". I think that says it all for any DLC member - be it Lieberman or a Clinton....

Whitman? You've got to be

Whitman? You've got to be kidding. Indeed, that's BAGGAGE. Yikes. I think Obama should probably avoid a female running mate, though Barbara Boxer, Jean Carnahan or Claire McCaskell would be cool. Alas, the racists are usually misogynists as well. A black man and a woman of any color will turn them off, and there is no way around it. I think Wesley Clark might be just the ticket... Though I'd most like to see Obama choose Kucinich or Gravel.

Not Edwards.

Edwards was too scared to sully his golden boy image when he ran as Kerry's running mate. Not to mention that he's had his opportunity to get on the Obama bandwagon and has declined.

Actually, Obama needs someone like Dick Cheney, except with a heart. Obama needs someone who's been around DC long enough to know how to get things done but, first, he needs a bulldog who'll do the growling and biting at McCain.

I don't have a name yet but he or she must be savvy about politics and bureacracy.

EDWARD MARKEY.

Obama/Markey 2008

Rep. Edward Markey (D-MA)

Edward J. Markey has constructed an extraordinary legislative record since his first election to the United States Congress in 1976. As one of the most senior Members in Congress, he has shaped more than 20 years of telecommunications policy while championing consumer rights, health reform, the elimination of large monopolies, the conservation of environmental resources, the reduction of nuclear threats and the strengthening of our homeland security. He is one of the most articulate and informed voices in Congress concerning both energy and environmental policy, and he has consistently championed consumer rights, energy efficiency and environmental protection.

Who Obama should not Pick for VP

My gues is that he will pick Hillary and that in less than a year she will become a new Prez due to Obama's accidental mishap while sport-shooting with ex-VP Dick. Seriously, he will pick someone way out from the left field but will endup tragically, either way. If THEY could get JFK,RFK, MLK,and numerous others, why not BHO?

Draft Al Gore for Obama's VP

Sure, of course Al said "Absolutely not" in response to questions if he would accept any position lesser than the Presidency itself. However, Obama brings a whole new perspective that he will change "The way gov't does business in DC", while not accepting any lobby money. Not only would we have the most solid ticket imaginable, but the best team to face the challenges our nation expects them to. Its a new ballgame. Al, if you don't accept Obama's offer for vp in his administration, I'll just have to send you a scolding letter with a copy of my new book: "An Inconvenient Job" Thanks for considering it. Lars Roose Albuquerque a.k.a. Radioguts

Forget Gore -- He's Too Committed to the Environmental Cause Now

Al Gore's political career is finished -- by his own choice. He's too committed to the environmental movement now to step back into the partisan political wars.

How about Colin Powell for V.P. under Obama?

This is a POSITIVE suggestion. Colin Powell would be an amazing choice for Obama. He's never wanted to run for President because of his wife, but maybe Obama would just interest him enough. He's African-American, of course, but he's a boring Episcopalian, which would soften the Jeremiah Wright image. He's loved by conservatives, independents, and Democrats. Adds MUCHO foreign affairs experience. IT WOULD ALSO BE A SPECIAL SLAP IN BUSH/CHENEY'S FACE.

Alma Powell Will Adamantly Say NO!

While Colin Powell would have a golden opportunity to redeem himself from his deceiving the world with his presentation to the uhited Nations about iraq's non-existent stockpile of weapons of mass destruction, i don't see him becoming Barack Obama's VP for one very important reason: Powell's wife will adamantly say "No!" Remember that Alma Powell vetoed a possible Powell candidacy for the GOP presidential nomination in 2000, stating publicly that she feared for her husband's life if he became president. She wasn't convinced that Ronald Reagan had really broken the so-called "zero-year curse," that saw every president elected during a year ending in zero die in office, from William Henry Harrison (1840) to John F. Kennedy (1960). Reagan, elected in 1980, barely survived an assassination attempt in 1981.

NEVER!

Powell would be the kiss of death!

NOT Colin Powell

No Republicans. No Bush administration. No military.

Don't forget

Don't forget, he's the one who talked us into going to war...

For heavens sake, don't pick Hillary...

Please Obama, don't pick Hillary...She has too much baggage...I meam, just because women represent 60% of the vote and the majority of women have been voting for Hillary instead of you is no reason...Just because the majority of Latino's have voted for Hillary and not for you, is not a reason...Just because senior citizens voted for Hillary and not for you, is no reason...Just because she will command a huge share of the white vote is no reason...Just because she could lock up New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Florida, and California for you is no reason...Just because 15 million people have voted for her so far is no reason...Just because she has won 1697 delagates so far is no reason...Shall I go on??...

She fights dirty, believes only in herself, and is a DINO

If Obama picked her, he would have to hire food tasters. Competent management requires a trust in one another. There would be none between Obama and the Clintons, and I do mean plural. Pay her eleven million dollar tab. Then be done with her. I wouldn't want to be anywhere near when that bad Karma comes boomeranging back.

Best VP Pick in my opinion

I just read a NYT article describing how much better and more tested a candidate Obama is due to the tough fight with HRC during this long primary. I personally started out favoring HRC, but just cast my vote in Oregon for Obama yesterday. Still, roughly half of the democratic votes cast around the country during this primary were for HRC. If Obama wants to win, and if we as a Democratic Party want to win, there simply is no other better choice than HRC. Hey, I know that idea reeks to a lot of you Obama fantatics out there. But looking back on my past, some of my best friends were guys that I had initially disliked and even got into fist fights with. Obama would know one thing with HRC as his VP, and so would the American people, and that is that he's got a winner and a fighter in his corner. And as a final argument in defense of my opinion, the fanatic right wing lunatics out there who are fantasizing about assassinating our first black president might hesitate knowing that the result would be our first female president. Just my opinion...

Edwards sounds like he's angling for a McCain cabinet post

As shocking as it sounds, John Edwards was full of praise the other day regarding McCain's apparent receptiveness to a "Dept of Poverty" or something, with Edwards as Secretary. Ken Duerksen Oxford, Ohio

Vice Pres. Pick

I think that A good pick for john MacCain would be some one to bring the party together. How about Barbara Bush. Now you can't get more conservative then Barbara.

Ron Paul would be 'The Uniter VP'

But if the GOP picked Paul, then Obama could counter their move by picking Dennis Kucinich. But then it could really get interesting if Paul and Kucinich mutinied and formed their own presidential campaign. With Kucinich running as the president, of course!

Bill Richardson----->

southwest hispanic governor more experienced masters international poli. The man showed his class during the debates... ...impressed many who watched Covers a lot of voting areas which could use a boost for the dems and are different than Obama's I just plain like the guy.... ....I'd rather have a beer with bush ....But I'd rather leave running the country to someone with a brain

Good choice for a cabinet post...

...not enough charisma or meaness for the VP slot.

Obama V-P Pick

Please, not Christie Whitman. She has too many negatives. She put the NJ government into a lot of trouble by her backdoor financing of tax cuts, and then her failed time as EPA head during 9/11 and following. Bush hung her out and she left w's administration in a "to spend more time with her family" type of resignation. She wrote some kind of whining book about "her (political) party" which quickly went on the remainder table. You would have to pay most people to read it.

Of course not. No Republicans.

Colleen Clark Cambridge, MA

Obama's VP

Terrorism is going to return as the number one concern for the majority of Americans. Count on it. The Republicans will see to it. Obama had better pick a running mate who is seen as having the military experience and judgment that Obama lacks or the "war hero" McCain will be an easy sell to the masses of fearful voters. Maybe Wes Clark?

U.S. Warmongers Cause Terrorism

After seven and a half years of bullying the world, we are less safe than before. We don't need any more military men or chicken hawks in the White House. That includes Wesley Clark. The reason we have terrorists in the world is because they hate our imperialism, not our freedom. Stop the imperialism, genocide and exploitation, and you stop the terrorism. With that in mind, Dennis Kucinich, who still wants to start a Department of Peace, would be the best VP candidate to put an end to terrorism.

No Gephardt, Yes Howard Dean

If you remember, four years ago Gephardt did his Clinton impersonation and made it his personal quest to take down Howard Dean. Joe Trippi, Dean's campaign manager at the time, fell into Gephardt's trap and responded negatively in kind. But the Iowans did not like their little tiff. That's why Dean lost Iowa and why Gephardt faded away into oblivion, where he belongs. So leave him there. Speaking of Howard Dean, as the DNC Chairman, he has done wonders for the Democratic Party on a national, state and local basis. Howard Dean and his 50 state strategy, more than Sen. Schumer or Rep. Emmanuel, is responsible for the Democrats winning big two years ago. He flew under the radar, literally, traveling around the country teaching Democrats how to win against Republicans, which they did on all levels in all parts of the country in 2006. Dean promised not to run for president this year, but the VP position was never taken off the table. Dean speaks power to the truth. But he does it in a way that everyone can understand. Yet he does not dumb down his rhetoric, he actually says something meaningful when he talks. No wonder the fascists who control the MSM had to take him down with the 'Dean Scream.' Today, even the poor, uneducated, racist white people would vote for Obama with Dean as his VP running mate. Democratic Vice Presidential Candidate Howard Dean screams for me! Obama/Dean 2008

VP

According to AP, Obama camp has scheduled a meeting with Christie Todd Whitman, former Gov. NJ, frmr EPA sec. Additionally, the website obamawhitman2008.com was purchased just yesterday... might be an interesting wrinkle...

Whitman?

She of the air quality fiasco at Ground Zero? Ouch, that's bigtime baggage.
