SNL's inability to find a good Obama impression speaks to racism or political bias

I made myself sit through 90 minutes of "Saturday Night Live." Watching people blatantly read off cue cards makes me dizzy. -- Chad

Saturday night's episode of "Saturday Night Live" was the fourth live show in a row, a rare occurrence for the show and, in part, a way to make up for going dark during the writers strike.

For all we write about "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" and the "Colbert Report," the truth is that they are on basic cable.

The returning SNL episode on February 23 drew 6 million people, while The Daily Show drew about 1.6 million people before the strike, and the Colbert Report drew about 1.15 million. Also, the MSM gives more credibility to SNL's work since it is on a network.

FOX's "Mad TV" is a network sketch show but they generally don't do political content. So "Saturday Night Live" on NBC has a prominent position in the political landscape. And it is in earnest that Lorne Michaels find someone who can do a legitimate Barack Obama impression.

Obama is very likely going to be the Democratic Party nominee, and perhaps the next president of the United States. We are talking 5-9 years of work for someone who can pull it off.

Just so we're clear, I like Fred Armisen. He has a versatile knack for offbeat characters, and his impressions have been fun. But his version of Barack Obama isn't good.

Visually, it's rather good. But when he speaks, it doesn't work. And Obama is more about when he speaks then what he looks like.

Yes, I did write about this subject before, but then, some issues were raised that aren't as relevant now.

This isn't about race. If Armisen could sound like him, with his vocal inflections and patterns, we wouldn't care about his origins. This isn't even about gender. Maya Rudolph, who was a long-time member of the cast who didn't come back after the writers strike, might have been able to pull it off. But we won't get a chance to see her attempt.

It does affect the writing. Skits have come across as pro-Hillary Clinton in part because Amy Poehler does a rather good impression of Clinton. And if you are pro-Hillary Clinton, consider this. If Obama does win the nomination, the skits will end up being pro-John McCain.

Darrell Hammond already does a solid John McCain, as we saw in the last episode. The show did a "NBC Special Report" about discovering that McCain is old. The fact that they buried the skit in the last half-hour may speak to the politics at SNL. Without a credible Obama impression, the show will have a huge bias in favor of McCain.

To give you an idea of the contribution from African-Americans, here is the entire output from the last episode:

Two songs from musical guest Mariah Carey, one with her and T Pain.

A response (three weeks after Tina Fey) to her "bitch is the new black" from former cast member Tracy Morgan.

Kenan Thompson in one skit (about an hour into the show) had 3 lines: "Um, excuse me, can I pay for these?" "It's for my blemishes. Do you mind?" "Here's $10. Keep the change."

"Mad TV" hasn't had a problem employing and using talented African-American performers: Phil LaMarr and Debra Wilson in the early years, and Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele among others in recent years.

Yes, Lorne Michaels has his discretion to choose the cast members he wants. And he has developed quote a track record since 1975. But he and NBC have to understand that the Obama issue won't go away. And if Morgan's appearance was meant to be a concession to the anti-Obama criticism the show has received, it isn't enough.

This isn't 1975 anymore. Chevy Chase as Gerald Ford didn't fit in looks, voice, or mannerisms. Except for the falling down part, Chase's impressions weren't remarkable. But the impression wasn't designed to be direct, and in the era of Rich Little, perhaps a way of changing things up from the status quo. And while Dan Aykroyd's Jimmy Carter didn't always look like him, he did have the sound and inflections.

As we have learned from the recent impressions of Ronald Reagan (Harry Shearer, Joe Piscopo, Randy Quaid, and Phil Hartman), George H. W. Bush (Dana Carvey), Bill Clinton (Hartman/Darrell Hammond), and George W. Bush (Will Ferrell, Chris Parnell, Will Forte, Hammond, Jason Sudeikis), vocals and mannerisms are more important.

After the soft treatment the show gave George W. Bush, we looked forward to a more accurate treatment of the next president. If that is Obama, SNL needs to show it is capable of stepping up to the challenge. To say otherwise implies that there isn't someone of color who can do an impression. And we know that isn't so.

If it's a Clinton-McCain matchup, Poehler and Hammond are ready to go. But Obama is in the lead and has a really good chance to be around for a long time. And "Saturday Night Live" isn't ready for Obama, and hasn't been for a year. Since it isn't ready by now, and is having trouble getting ready, the only impression left is either racism or political bias.

SNL

I think this is ridiculous. SNL has lampooned every president in office since it's start. I have seen Fred Armisen do Barrack Obama on the show and I think he is fine. Dan Ankroyd did Jimmy Carter with a mustache and no one complained about that even though Carter had no mustache. I think the only way that they could make you people happy is if they went out and found a look a like impersonator or maybe Barrack can play himself or maybe SNL can just not do him at all. Wouldn't that cause a stir if they just ignored him altogether. I don't know what you are going to do if he is the nominee and actually wins the presidency and the editorial cartoonists begin drawing him in caricature. They will exaggerate some part of his appearance and who knows what it will be but are you going to challenge them on every drawing of him. I have seen many interpretations of Hillary, Bush and Bill Clinton and I never heard one complaint. It looks like you are giving people that are on the fence about whether or not to vote for him a good reason not to if we are going to hear constant whining of racism everytime he is portrayed in the press. This is beginning to wear quite thin already. PS: I have already seen some caricatures of him in the newspapers so get your crying towel ready.

Obama and other things

Thanks for making it clear to me once again how the Republicans will do anything to divide Democrats. People keep your eyes on the prize. We need new leadership to change the direction of this country. Don't get distracted by old scandals or what kind of preacher one has. Remember, the bigger picture, unending wars, possible total world collaspe of finances, the environment, no health care, hell no future for anyone but the wealthy. We can do better than this people. So let's do it.

Now you've got to be kidding

I've seen it all now. This is ridiculous. How asinine it all seems. When does someone constantly calling another person "racist" become racism themself? So we don't like the "impression" someone is doing of the favored son, it is "racism or political bias?" Can you hear yourself? Now, obviously because I am taking another tack and don't buy this blatant framing of the discussion, I will be label not only a Hillary-supporter or Barack-hater, but also racist. Someone on another blog put it quite succinctly: think a white man with a message of hope running this year wouldn't have had a better advantage being black? (read - in this climate)...think John Edwards. Should Barack Obama get the nod he will have my absolute support. Should Hillary be the nominee, likewise. Should they bury the hatchet and create a "dream team" in either configuration, I'll have my tux cleaned for the inaugural. But spare me the hand-wringing and back-biting of such childish rhetoric as "because they couldn't cast a 'good' impressionist for X they are racists." You have demeaned the process. It would not matter which side of the debate this was proposed. This has become no more than the mob of provincial morons carrying torches and shouting about "string 'em up" even without knowing what the question was. I love a parade... grow up.

The Rock as Barrack

Maybe they could bring in Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson to play Barrack Obama. He is half black himself and sounds just like him. Can you smeeeellllll what Barrack is Cookin?

Good for Tracy

I have to say, I cheered when I heard Tracy Morgans commentary - bitch may be the new black but black is the new president, bitch. Beautiful! Thanks Tracy! SNL runs hot and cold (been a fan since the beginning). They're in a very dry spell at the moment. I don't think an Obama presidency is going to be good for comedians though. He's too elegant and confident, honorable and accomplished with a pitch perfect persona and there's just no comedy in that! Maybe he'll trip over something like Gerald Ford did or let that silver tongue slip and say something like put food on the family. Untill then, while he is awesome, he's just not fodder for the comedic mind. Although Stephen Colbert just put him in the costume of the Quaker Oats guy and said he was a Quaker. That was funny! On the other hand, I would love to have a president who can rise above our silliness and lead us to a higher place where our comedy isn't so cynical or destructive. 1/20/09 - End of an Error!

the only impression left is either racism or political bias.

As long as we lefty progressives keep throwing ourselves into this kind of identity politics briar patch, we will never seize control of the public discourse in this country...END THE F$&*&*%(ing WAR!! END TAX BREAKS FOR THE F(*(&*(_)KING WEALTHY..Dont waste time debating whether this silly crap is racist!

Geez, no kidding

I don't think I can take five or six more weeks of this blather on TV about the reverend and was Obama on the plane to Miami or was he sitting in a pew with cotton stuffed in his ears or was he nodding to the reverend's words or ... arrrgggghhh! The financial institutions are falling down around our ears, along with the dollar, while Cheney and his trusty sidekick John McBush are trotting around Iraq, proclaiming what a beautiful thing it is to behold and oh, by the way, mission accomplished. Meanwhile, Obama has to give a religious speech -- and doesn't the constitution (you remember, that old rag) forbid all or most of this crap going on regarding a candidate and religion? How the hell did it happen that the Dems had this election by the horns and now, a few months later, we'll be amazed if there's even a Democratic party left?

Bias or racism?

Always being on the lookout for slights and insults no matter what the source or how far you have to reach must be exhausting.

I personally find the Obama impression quite good. The actor conveys the empty suit very well. You may say Amy Pohler does a good job. I think she centers more on the negative aspects of Clinton's personality, but then it is after all satire.

And why is it an insult to not have a black actor playing Obama? Obama doesn't call himself black. Obama calls himself a hybrid, and indeed we are all hybrids.

So get up and go on with your life and stop looking for what isn't there. Dr King, God rest his soul, would roll over in his grave.

Make satire of Obama legitimate

I want SNL to criticize and satirize Obama -- I just want it to be accurate and legitimate. And yes, their inability -- to find someone good after a year of Obama being on the scene -- is racist. To say they can't find a quality black man or woman who can do an Obama impression is insulting to us all. Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Bill Cosby, Chris Rock -- they aren't funny because they're black. They are funny men who happen to be black.

Call is Out

SNL has had a call out for a long time for someone to play Obama, but they have had very few people try out according to a story in the entertainment section of the NYT.

"Racism" on SNL

Yes, by all means call anyone or anything or any group that criticizes or satirizes Obama or relates the fact that he draws a heavy African-American vote, a racist. Also state that anyone or group that brings out any truth critical of Senator Obama to be the moral equivalent of Luis Farrakhan, e.g., Geraldine Ferraro's observation about his vote pulling power among enrolled African-American voters. I can see a silencing of critics should Obama ever reach the presidency. Talk about a climate of fear.

Morons amuck

Don't even worry about Ferraro's racism. Beyond that, her statements are stupid and like Obama said "ridiculous". The idea that a black man with an african/middle eastern sounding name would have any kind of inside track to the white house is one of the most historically stupid things anyone has ever said in politics. By the way, your syntax is terrible, but I was still able to ascertain that you are also a moron.

Buzzflash, do you really believe what you're saying?

Do you remember the story of the boy that cried wolf? That is exactly what Buzzflash is doing with the constant hollering of "racism". You're going to make that word not mean anything by the time you are through ranting about it constantly. Not everything is racism and just because Saturday Night Live hasnt found a good Obama impersonator that doesnt mean its racist. Give me a break. Has it occured to you that maybe Obama is just a hard guy to mimick? Bill Clinton was easy, add a southern accent, bite your bottom lip, make a fist and point your thumb at people as you speak and you've successfully mimicked Bill Clinton. Obama is harder. First of all he's half white and half black so that narrows done some of the pool of people that you can use to imitate him. Second, he's tall and a lot skinnier than most, that too makes the pool of possible choices even smaller. Think about it. How many people on tv remind you of Obama? Not everything is racist you know?! We democracts and liberals make fools out of ourselves sometimes hollering about things that are so off base and dont matter. It doesnt mean Saturday Night Live is racist because they cant find a good impressionist. They never did get John Kerry down either. Only his hair-do. And for Buzzflash to speak about political bias, have you read your own Anti Hillary newsletters that you send out everyday? Its always anti-Hillary in headline and content and Pro-Barack. You're no different than what you say Saturday Night Live is.
