None But the Brave

A BUZZFLASH EDITORIAL

It’s a testament to the cynical -- but tragically realistic – faith that Karl Rove has in television and the corporate media to transmit lies.

Indeed, just as Bush was hammering home the latest GOP propaganda mantra about Osama equaling Hitler, Bush’s main Islamic "ally" in the war on terrorism, Pakistan, was announcing that bin Laden could live in Pakistan "in peace."

(Although Pakistan, under apparent pressure from the White House, now denies it has given bin Laden a free pass to reside there, an ABC News interview reveals otherwise.)

Rove knows that reality doesn’t trump the repetition of lies in the modern media age for those Americans who rely on television and the sycophantic mainstream media who still allows Bush to appear credible by headlining his increasingly extreme and bizarre propaganda statements. The first rule of Rovian politics is that if you repeat a lie five times, it becomes the truth.

And with a sycophantic mainstream media, he is generally right.

But there’s one truth that cannot be obscured by lies: the Bush administration encourages us to tremble in fear. They do not lead a true fight against terrorism; they use terrorism as a tool to hold onto and expand power. They use terrorism to terrorize us – and in so doing weaken democracy.

The Bush Administration's goal, as one BuzzFlash reader noted, is not to get us to fear the terrorists; it is to get 51% of Americans to fear Democrats more than they fear terrorists.

It’s a game of piling fear so high, you can’t climb over the wall to the sanctuary of reason and competence. We just become rats running around in a maze of panic.

As highlighted on a postcard BuzzFlash offers, Benjamin Franklin said: "Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."

And on the back of the postcard, there is an image of FDR who said: ""The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."

Through focus groups, the Rovian message machine has focused on making Osama bin Laden equivalent to the Nazi threat. Apparently, this rings a bell with enough voters who get all their news from flashing phrases and images on television.

But, we had a president in World War II who didn’t appease the enemy by letting them accomplish their goal of making us live in fear.

Today, we have quite the opposite: an administration who can only govern by achieving the goal of terrorists. The Bush Administration not only gives into fear; it is a cheerleader for it.

Brave men and women, as Franklin noted, defiantly defend their Constitution, their liberties, and their right to live free of being fear mongered by an enemy or a government. Bush enables the terrorists by doing their fearmongering for them – and by taking away our liberties for them.

None but the brave advocate the flourishing of freedom, liberty and democracy in the face of those who would challenge these cherished national rights.

That is the opposite of a desperate political party that whips up a country into a frenzy of fear and national hysteria.

None but the brave can save America from terrorism and a Quisling government that betrays its own people.

Will the "land of the free and the home of the brave" triumph over the immoral demagogues?

The terrorist threat will diminish as soon as our one-party system ends, because the terrorists will no longer be useful to the Republicans as a tool to hold onto power.

To vote Democratic is to be brave and to strike a blow against terrorism: both from abroad and from the White House.

First Things First - Bring The Troops Home Now

That's the key, not only to our taking back Congress, but to the impeachment of President George Bush and, subsequently, getting him tried at the International Court of Criminal Justice for his crimes against humanity. So if we don't end the Iraq war, nothing's going to change, and what difference then, Democrat or Republican. As if it's possible to tell them apart now?

The Nation Needs a Healing

I'm in my mid-50s and I've never been witness to such a depressing state of affairs as that which Bush & Co. has foistered upon us over these past six years...And this, you might remember, from the man who pledged during his first presidential campaign to "restore honesty and integrity to the Oval office". This is by far and away the worst six year period that I've ever had to endure during my entire lifetime. So much negativity and misery has been compressed into such a short period of time as to leave one feeling baffled, bereaved and bereft. I've survived three decades of the Cold War, eight years of Vietnam, and seven years of Nixon and his Watergate. And, yes, I also survived that wretched, mean-spirited, despicable attempt by a group of power-hungry, steroidal Republicans, buoyed by a menacing, predatory and frenzied corporate media, to remove from office an authentically elected, real people's choice, Bill Clinton -- one of our most popular presidents in recent history. Bill's sin was to have had the outrageous audacity to lie about a simple, personal and private affair. How grossly depressing that soap opera became. All of the above, of course, served to test the strength, resiliency and endurance of America, its people, and its principles. And none - NONE - have ravaged us so as these past six years under George W. Bush, and his bevy of ravenous sycophants occupying the Republican controlled House and Senate. And let us not forget to pay equal tribute to a largely ubiquitously compliant corporate media whose sponsors have happened to have profited greatly by this unseemly, sordid relationship. Never before has a social and political environment become so deeply toxic, so layered with lies, deceit and a blatant and arrogant misuse of power so as to shock one's senses. This period under Bush's rule has become such a soul-sapping, depressing burden that tests our spirit and the limits of our political endurance. How much longer must we endure this onslaught of so-called "compassionate conservatism"? How many more lies and misdeeds and costly misadventures must America suffer before the light of truth washes over us with its healing power and restores our sanity? There is so much harm and neglect that our cherished system has had to endure over these past six years. Certainly, our Founding Fathers would be shocked and dismayed by the outright ignorance and callous disregard by our so-called "leaders" for those sacred, foundational principles and beliefs that so elegantly and valiantly set us apart from the rest of the world. Sadly, freedom and liberty are being too quickly sacrificed -- purportedly to protect us from a threat from what amounts to a comparatively small group of ill-equipped, desert terrorists -- small when juxtaposed against the threat of our principal Cold War adversary from the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s -- the Soviet Union, a political entity who possessed, along with us, the real and unimaginable power -- the demonstrated capability -- to deliver in a single momentary instant of pure insanity a "mutually assured destruction" (MAD) -- the immediate and total annihilation of our society and civilization in general -- a war, by the way, in which we managed to prevail without having sacrificed so much as a single freedom or personal liberty. Today, our system of checks and balances which valiantly withstood the battles and severe challenges of time as outlined above has, under the dubious auspices of George W. Bush, been so shaken and throttled by a particularly singular and myopic group of power-hungry miscreants whose sole motivations apparently derive from a type of personal code that is characterized by an unbridled and insatiable greed for power and personal aggrandizement. It is no wonder that we, as a people, have become outraged over the audacity, arrogance and insensitivity of this politically corrupt group of amoral thugs. To use a medical metaphor, we must purge the system of these impurities so as to restore that which sustains and nourishes. Lets do just that in the upcoming mid-terms and in the next presidential election. It will make us feel good.

Speaking of Quisling Governments

Try the Canadian version. Past Prime Minister, Martin, signed a deal with rumsfeld, a bi-national agreement(NorthCom) that gives the US the right to send troops to occupy Canada for any reason. This agreement, apparantly, includes the star wars missal system, which martin declared he was against having. Mexico is included in the deal. . Harper has signed a "trade agreement" that demands that Canada MUST sell 67% of its' oil to the US. In the works now is a new lumber agreement that will allow the US to keep almost $1billion dollars of the over $5billion in illegal tarrifs that have been collected. Almost a half billions dollars to be paid to bush directly. Guess what this will be used for. No one has said if this was bush's condition or a throw away by Harper. . And you thought that the NAFTA agreements only screwed you, think again. You may have problems in Iraq, but bush and company have almost annexed canada without firing a shot! . Kranky Canuck

Fear One Party Rule

The only fear I have at this time is that of One Party Rule. The name of the party is irrelavant other than it happens to be Republican at this time in the USA. I am non-partisan, and will vote the Democratic ticket this time--I've never voted party line before. My priority is to give the Democrats sopena power to uncover the truth. Undo as much of the Republican damage as possible, and strive to clean up both parties. Cleaning up the parties will require the rank-and-file of both parties to get involved and take charge on the local level. Maybe the reason I feel no immediate fear of terrorism is that I no longer watch tv, and read the paper with scepticism. I also take the time to seek out original documents and read them for myself. Then I go back over what the administration is saying. Fool you once, shame on them. Fool you twice, shame on you. Fool you thrice, Helloooooo?

Fear and To vote Democratic is to be brave

I think Rove and the GOP are talking only to insiders. I doubt that any of us fear any particular politician- we just rightfully lump them all into a pile of people who hate America and are doing their absolute best to send our Nation down the drain. "To vote Democratic is to be brave" is silly. The best decision is to vote every last politician out of office and bring in an entirely new group and maybe in that group there will be a few Americans who love our Nation, close our borders and bring our military home. The GOP has to be voted out and so do the Dems. Every single politician and even if you can rationalize how great your favorites are- which they aren't otherwise you wouldn't feel so awful.

All Polititions are not equal, even bad ones

In a bit over a month I will have a vote for K. Harris, The Evil Woman of the Millenium, or Bill Nelson, Dino, no prize, but so much better than KH he could be a saint by comparison.

The time may come when a man with the stature of Lamont able to win in the South may rise to challenge him, and then he will have my support. We had such a man in Lawton Chiles, but he died before we could clone him.

Untill you know what an unknown can be, simply bad may be a preference. If you doubt it, then you are no smarter than the Chimpster, and his beliefs about the improvements he could make in Iraq.

Well said

Having two dreadful choices is simply awful. I prefer cleaning house. But I see your point and will have to make the same decision. The problem we all face is that the next preisent will be a Dem and this person should have a Dem Congress as Bush has had. The best would be to have an opposing Congress but this is impossible to imagine. So- I will not vote for republican no matter who he is. The GOP has demeaned our Nation. We might as well give it back to the Dems, who will most likely do the same.

Nazi Comments

I think it needs to be said that the curious juncture of multiple references to Hitler and Nazis are indications that this is part of a larger plan to skew the elections via fear, hate and fear again. Is this a Rove tactic writ large against the media background? It seems quite clear to me that this needs to be thrown back into their faces as it has been done somewhat to Rumsfeld and I hope it will be done to George W. Bush.

I agree that the Democrats all our only choice to end this madness. I am a Democrat, but I do not believe that all Democratic politicians have done all that they could do to oppose and end these policies of discord and waste. With Democrats in power, it will not be a panacea, but neither will it be a disaster. In stark terms, to vote Republican is to accept fear as constant in your life, to vote Democratic is to bring reasonable governance back into the body politic and reduce the brazen cries of fear mongering afflicting the us all. I refuse to buy into that fear and resent those telling us we need to be fearful.

BushCo Needs a History Lesson

What absolutely astounds me is this new "nazi rhetoric" which first rumsfeld used in a speech and then bush. If these so-called self proclaimed historians want to really know what the nazi's did then all they would have to do is read what rove's counterpart in the nazi party had to say at the Nuremberg Trials after WWII. Quote: ..."Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of their leaders. This is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in every country." Hermann Goering speaking at Nuremberg Trials after World War II. Does this sound familiar?

None but the brave can save America

I don't think most Americans are as afraid of terrorists as we once were. Gradually the truth is penetrating the veils of propaganda, so the fearmongering has to be ramped up in response. It's a desperate tactic by a failed dictator-wannabe who fails at everything. He will fail at tyranny when more Americans see that HE is the enemy of freedom and HE is the terrorist in our midst. Know your enemy, America.

Bush as fear monger

Hitler and Stalin had the industrial and military might of nation states behind them. What does bin Laden have? Maybe W has forgotten, but if FBI administrators had listened to their field agents and connected a few dots, 9/11 may have been a thwarted terrorist plot, too. If the same idiots are still in charge, I question if we are any safer today than five years ago. Is is interesting that recent foiled plots were foiled by foreign governments. Supposedly, this government has foiled plots, but they never seem to have enough evidence to prosecute the perps. So much for being the most powerfl nation on the planet. Bush's rhetoric of fear is a smokescreen for a foreign policy devoid of substance. Talk is cheap. It's time for results.

Limited Options

The line between Republican and Democrat is razor thin. For every Feingold, there are a dozen Liebermans. I can be proud of Illinois for Dick Durbin and Barak Obama, but neither one is loud enough on the Senate floor to amount to a real opposition. Being unhappy with BushCo is not enough, one must be angry. One must be fighting mad. I have watched with growing horror as the Dems roll over again and again and again. Who in government is fit to be president? If the choice is Hillary, we might as well drop the pretense of being a republic and openly declare ourselves a fascist state. We're already there, might as well stop fooling ourselves. Corporate rule is all that matters. Greed is the god we trust. We have the government we deserve. We can get a better government only when we struggle to become better people.

Crap

No difference between the parties? The trade center was still standing when Clinton left office, and we had a surplus, not a deficit.

There's a huge difference. To pretend otherwise on a Democratic board is to serve the will of Karl Rove.

I call troll.

oh yeah, I forgot!

Ah yes, I forgot the Dems defeating the foolish Patriot Act, the censuring of the President, and their hard won victory over who should become a Supreme Court justice. How silly of me. The huge Dem effort to put a halt to US War Crimes is another feather in their cap. Heroes all.

Fearful by choice

All of us are afraid of something. We can choose to stand and face the fear or run and hide under the bed hoping that someone else will protect us. I make no claim to being brave. I have been afraid of a myriad of things my whole life. But I was fortunate enough to have parents that taught us that fear is something common to all, nothing to be ashamed of unless we give in to it. So frightened and trembling I have ususally faced my fears. I am ashamed as an American that so many others do not. This hysterical fear-mongering bunch seems to believe that Americans are frightened little cowards. Please let them be wrong! If this truly is the "land of the free and the home of the brave" then these Rovian fear tactics will no longer fall on fertile ground. If we allow our fear to dictate our actions we will have betrayed our country far more than any spy or enemy ever did or could. "In politics, what begins in fear usually ends in folly." ---- Coleridge

Very well said

I think one key difference between FDR and King George is this. FDR was a leader. Bush is a ruler. tseving -Surviving Bush one day at a time http://tomcatsbox.spaces.live.com
