The United States is a Radical and Revolutionary Nation

"The United States is a Radical and Revolutionary Nation."

How those phrases -- radical and revolutionary, which we ostensibly celebrate every July 4th -- send shivers of disgust down the spine of the entrenched status quo in D.C. and the great masses who are convinced that calling themselves "patriots" is itself enough to bestow virtue upon them.

q

Yes, before radical and revolutionary became words that had all the Hellish connotations of being called a "Communist," the Declaration of Independence was written and forged as a compact by people who created a revolutionary and radical nation in the then monarchal world of governments.  One of the great and saddest of ironies is that we celebrate in word the "American Revolution" on July 4th, but implicitly and explicitly denonuce -- via conventional "centrist" and mainstream media wisdom -- the concept of "revolution" as something that is Un-American!

Since BuzzFlash was founded in May of 2000 -- and was the largest leading Internet voice at the time for a return to our Constitutional roots -- the Netroots has grown to an incalculable number of sites (many of them now larger in readership than BuzzFlash) who advocate not revolution, but an honoring of our Constitutional principles and amendments as intended.

Scalia and his right wing cohorts on the Supreme Court are really judicial activists who are pre-Constitutional and pre-Revolutionary in their outlook; they want the unitary branch executive authority of a monarch -- and rule by a court of advisors.  If this sounds like the views of Tories and royalists, that is because Scalia, Alito, Roberts, Thomas, and most of the time Kennedy would have been sending the revolutionaries off to hang on behalf of King George.  Revolution is a word that they deplore as believers in rule by the intellectually elite and "chosen."

BuzzFlash has never been a radical or revolutionary publication if that is defined as deviating from the Constitution or Declaration of Independence; yet, the right wing often defines a devotion to issues like civil liberties guaranteed in the Bill of Rights as radical -- and they don't mean that as a compliment.

The right wing, ironically, are the dangerous radicals today.  They want to rewrite the Constitution to build a nation where church and state are not separated, where there is no balance of powers between the three branches of government, where civil liberties are suspended upon the whim of the chief executive (read oligarchical king or queen), where the marketplace (the big one) is fixed based on fixed contracts handed out to corporate members of the Royal Court, and much more that has to do with the pre-American Revolution characteristics of rule by a king, favored companies, government secrecy, and the economic suppression of the masses.

Meanwhile, the Republican Party -- using Madison Avenue and brainwashing memes -- has convinced the "subjects" that the mere mention of being "patriotic" or the wearing of a lapel pin endows them with a superior morality and right to prevail in any conflict -- because being born American is an entitlement under this exercise in vanity and self-delusion -- not a virtue that someone has to work at.

That is precisely the status quo of hereditary government that the American patriots of the late 1700's revolted against, and took the radical step of forming a one-white man/one-vote democracy.  But the Constitution provided, in its beautiful crafting, a certain amount of elasticity.  So in time, blacks and women were added to the voting roles and, as a nation evolving toward higher goals, we moved forward.  Dynamic change and improvement: these were two other "radical" notions of the American Revolution.

Any rock-brained poor soul can wave an American Flag (or in the bitterest of ironies a Confederate Flag) and smuggly call him or herself a "Patriot," but Patriotism is something that has to be earned.

Patriotism is not, as John McCain recently proclaimed, putting your nation over yourself.  In America, it is putting the principles of your nation -- as embodied in our revolutionary documents -- over our personal interests.

Principles are far different than blind allegiance and a sense of entitlement by birthright.  Principles require sacrifice, grit, and courage.  The founding principles of America require a commitment to a true democracy, where the majority of citizens -- not the corporatocracy and the Federalist Society -- rule.

We have, in large part, become a lazy and spoiled nation in which entertainment, the newest gadgets, the cheapest goods, plentiful gas, and self-aggrandizing "news" from the corporate media, have come to define our definition of success and fulfillment.

It's a long way from the battle against Naziism and and an expanionist Japanese empire in which all Americans participated in WW II.  It's a long way from the sense of community that we developed in rebuilding the infrastructure of the nation during the depression.

Maybe it's time to become radical again by returning to the revolutionary documents that created our nation.

We can't afford the neo-Monarchists to prevail if we honor the Spirit of '76.  They have done enough damage already.  They are the Tories in our midst.

NO SLACK

Sorry, but slack is dangerous. "Moving to the center" simply to win certain demographics might make success in an election easier, but it reinforces the false narratives of American Exceptionalism and political religiosity, among other destructive memes, that keep us as a nation from dealing with facts and rational responses to our problems. The status quo-serving myths that circulate through the ridiculous analyses offered by our "centrist" media must be exposed and replaced by honest discussion, and it looks like Obama has dropped that ball. After Obama's "race" speech I was very excited to have a candidate who seemed to excell at speaking directly about difficult subjects; who might actually succeed in bringing reason to our political system. Its been very disheartening to see him backslide so oportunistically on such issues as FISA and "faith-based initiatives".

Tyrants Lincoln and Bush Turned America Into Terrorist Nation

The Revolutionary War was a totally different thing than "being radical" - every human being has the right to fight tyranny. THAT is what that war was and so was the Lincoln War that the South fought against his tyranny, and had the South won, none of us would be still fighting this same Lincoln tyranny now today that is leading us into their OWG.. Both Lincoln and Bush are TYRANTS. This invasion policy is Lincoln's policy that is still with us, as is the NEW government he created and REPLACED our Founder's governmnet with in 1861, which caused the war. Obama has the dream of disarming America and so does McCain, regardless of the words they speak now to get your vote. They are "Part of the OWG Program" - never forget that. NOT once has ANY Candidate kept their words once they got into office - NOT ONE! So ignore what they say now. Look at their record, and in the case of Barack Hussein Muhammad Obama, look at his background, since he has no real politcal record. He is NOT "black" he is Arabic! His father's birth certificate says he is ARAB, not 'black'. Obama is Arab-American, not 'black' American. NO one checks into backgrounds anymore and then wonder how they get in office the losers they do! Bush, like Lincoln, has turned America into a terrorist nation - WE do the invading and occupying of any nation that does NOT obey OUR wishes - THAT is a terorist nation, which makes our innocent brainwashed troops, terrorists, as far as those nations being invaded are concerned. And we are! Just look at America's actions and then we call it "democracy" ! Everyone needs to take a good long look at what America stands for now ! And be embarrassed and saddened for it! OUR Founders never established America for this purpose and the Monroe Doctrine and Cosntitution has not been followed by the creeps that have been manipulated into gov't ! And WE THE PEOPLE are to blame - we allowed it to happen and did nothing ! WE still are DOING nothing ! All anyone does is TALK about it - no one DOES anything !

Lincoln=Bush?

The Confederacy should have won the civil war? Barack Hussein Muhammad Obama?

Some sort of disjointed satire ................

............................................. right?

No, Obviously Just a Racist Ann Coulter Fanboy Troll

Sounds like her brand of Fascistic Bigoted Revisionist "History", doesn't it...?

Even worse ....

"CSA" is an acronym for "Confederate States of America." http://www.confederatestatesofamerica.org/index.html

Apparently the Civil War hasn't ended yet. Go figure.

Ooooooh ..... HEY! Talk about an oxymoron! They have their own "Confederate Intelligence Bureau". http://www.confederatestatesofamerica.org/articles/csa-confederate-intelligence-bureau.htm

Join this month, and you get a free gun rack!

Just a guess, but I'm betting the hiring standards are not quite as high as the NSA/CIA/FBI.

The New American Revolution

Corporate government fails the people in every way, and works only to sustain and enrich the oligarchs with the money and power to run it. The time for a new American revolution, or "dynamic change and improvement" as you say, is upon us. The netroots and the grassroots are the battlegrounds now, and we will take the fight to the streets if necessary. We owe it to ourselves, our children, and our Founding Fathers to reclaim our heritage as radical revolutionary free PATRIOTIC people. (radical - "of or relating to the origin". Websters.com)

Questions that need to be continually asked

Brilliant essay that I'll be distributing widely. Let's encourage people to read the Declaration of Independence every day, not just on July 4th! We need to start asking critical questions when people settle for very generic words. For instance, we learn nothing about a person who says -- I believe in politics. Nor do we have anything to discuss when people affirm a faith in god or christianity or religion. We must discover Which One before any discussion can even begin. In similar ways, patriotism needs preliminary clarifying. There are vast difference among My country, right or wrong; My country, may it be right; My country is right, morally and historically, when it does A (but NOT when it does non-A)

The US Nation

Glad to see the george w. bush was heckled during this Monticello speech. I found his mention of "free speech" in his speech hypocritical given his penchant for "free speech zones" for those of dissent and critics of his regimes policies. He has a lot of bull to say anything about free speech in light of his failure to uphold and protect the Bill of Rights and the US Constitution. His stretching of the truth is like a rubber band...all out of shape. His mouth is the proverbial forked toungue. How can anybody believe in his regime is beyond me and utterly insande. The Nations needs to wake-up to the fact that it is failing in support of freedom and democracy it so highly touts, especially on the 4th of July. Too many are not and cannot celeberate because of this Nations policies and tyranny to the world and its own people.

Oh, but the M$M keeps telling us we're a CHIRSTIAN nation!

But the Main$tream Media keeps quoting all these TV Preachers who keep telling us that America is a Christian nation founded on Christian principles. Of course the Christianity they espouse is an Ayn Randian mutation of what one Jesus Christ actually said

the 5th on the 4th and every other day.

Thou shall not kill.

Radicalism & Revolution Since Early 21st Century America

"Inevitable?" "Not." "What then?" "Irresistable." "What made this possible?" "Equality." "Attained how?" "Online." "And since then what sort of world?" "It's been up to us."

Radical and revolutionary is like "change" Specifics Matter

When the roundheads overthrew the hated King in England, the theocratic "Change" was not an improvement. The last 8 years are another era of great change, and similarly terrible.

Across the US a wide variety of policy viewpoints have had one goal of stopping the Gang Of Pirates from flushing civilization. This was also the goal in Iran under the Shah, and that did not work out well either.

This time the theocrats are aligned mostly with the GOP, but there are still a lot of forces(such as AIPAC and others) that are not the friend of real progressives and will want the change they imagine rather than the one you do.

Obama is the only game left, and we will need every vote possible to overwhelm the fraud and deceit that will skew the results to McCain and the rest of the GOP, but if we can get to an Obama Presidency the real work will have barely begun, and will take generations of constant effort just to keep the possibilities of a progressive future.

Unfortunately I think Progressive thinking will continue to be "Radical & Revolutionary" for a long time to come.

If the Gang Of Pirates think that the only good Democrat is a dead Democrat, only a fool would think it bipartisan to accommodate them by acting the part.

Freedem, you MIGHT want to ask the Jews About the Roundheads

Cromwell's Protectorate wasn't all bad, as Simon Schama pointed out in his A HISTORY OF BRITAIN - for one thing, he let the Jews back into England after nearly 400 years of banishment. Also, don't forget Charles I was looking to turn England into an Absolute rather than Constitutional Monarchy - kind of like Bush (who resembles Charles I in a lot of ways) has been trying to do for the last six years? Who knows how much worse England might have been, even to this day, if Cromwell's Roundheads had failed?

OTOH, closing the theatres b/c Puritans didn't approve of popular entertainment? THAT totally sucked, and their Kingdom of Puritan Heaven on Earth certainly didn't scale at all - it collapsed shortly after Cromwell's death and Parliament restored the (more circumscribed Constitutional) Monarchy. Which may be the ultimate value of the Cromwell Protectorate - that it led to a longstanding English Government with strong separation of powers, and a much more pluralistic and free society that we used as the basis for our own.

Anyway - Happy Independence Day, God Save the Queen...and Curse the French! ;)

My point being....

That when overthrowing tyranny, some bedfellows are not just strange but also dangerous, and not everyone that hates Bush loves freedom or even thinks the word similarly.

If the Gang Of Pirates think that the only good Democrat is a dead Democrat, only a fool would think it bipartisan to accommodate them by acting the part.

MAYBE SO, BUT.........

WE CANNOT ALLOW HIM TO TAKE AWAY OUR 4TH AMENDMENT, JUST BECAUSE HE'S THE "ONLY GAME IN TOWN!"

No, Kroses - and that's why we keep the pressure on

OTOH, keeping Obama honest, despite the houris of Corporate "Centrism" whispering sweet nothings of All That Lovely Power That Could Be HIS If Only He Would Let Them Into His Bed, isn't the same as not voting for him and giving the bed up to McCain, is it...?

This tortured enhanced interrogated metaphor brought to you by Senator Obama, Please Vote Against FISA...who affirms that no massive organ damage or death occurred to the above-referenced metaphor....

Obama moving to the center

Obama is moving to the center is another way of saying he's turning into Republican Lite, just like Bill Clinton. I've pretty much decided that I am voting for Nader/Gonzales. I'm sick of being told by Democrats that Obama is better than the McBush alternative. There are other alternatives to McBush and as long as the sheeple in the Democratic Party continue on their corporatist path, they will continue to get the best in corporate government, usually defined as fascism.

It's time to tell Obama to stop his march to the right.

Your 4th amendment is already gone as with most others.

Obama is the only path to possible restoration of habeus much less the actual Constitution. I wish it weren't so and even if he is in there will be a lot of work to do as I noted above.

If the Gang Of Pirates think that the only good Democrat is a dead Democrat, only a fool would think it bipartisan to accommodate them by acting the part.

think

There will be 2 to 4 appointments to the Supreme Court in the next Presidency. Should they be McCain appointments? Give Obama some slack and trust his judgment!(isn't that the key word here?)

On Being a Revolutionary

Mark, brilliantly written and very inspiring. I will certainly pass this article on to as many as I can. How true it is that we have deviated so much from the basic principles that forged this democracy. It is also ironic that this neo-monarchal era was usherd in by another man named George.

Wait Wait Wait...

I think there was a typo, did you refer to Scalia and the other sludges as "intellectually elite"? For them to be intellectual, that would require intellect...

A Revolutionary Harrah!

Well done, Buzz. But one has to wonder how exactly do we re-assert our independence from the Monarchist? After all, electing a Democratic Congress hasn't seemed to work. Sometime next week the telecoms will undoubtedly be listening to our conversations and reading our emails and reporting anything we plan to the Tories--and they will be doing it legally.

THEY'VE BEEN DOING THAT FOR A LONG TIME.........

AND THEY HAVEN'T CARED WHETHER IT WAS LEGAL, OR NOT!!!
