When it Comes to the Vice-Presidency, Should Hillary Run on a McCain Ticket?

It is the one inviolable rule of party politics; don't promote the other party's candidate at the expense of your own.

In the past couple of weeks, Senator Hillary Clinton has violated that cardinal rule again and again as she personally vouched for the readiness of John McCain to assume the presidency, while belittling Barack Obama as nothing more than a speech.

Here is perhaps the most devastating gift she gave to the Republicans as she patronizingly dismissed Obama:

"I think that since we now know Sen. McCain will be the nominee for the Republican Party, national security will be front and center in this election. We all know that. And I think it’s imperative that each of us be able to demonstrate we can cross the commander-in-chief threshold,” the New York senator told reporters crowded into an infant’s bedroom-sized hotel conference room in Washington.

“I believe that I’ve done that. Certainly, Sen. McCain has done that and you’ll have to ask Sen. Obama with respect to his candidacy,” she said.

Calling McCain, the presumptive GOP nominee a good friend and a “distinguished man with a great history of service to our country,” Clinton said, “Both of us will be on that stage having crossed that threshold.”

Clinton couldn't stop herself from praising McCain: The pro-McCain comments were quickly and widely panned — so Clinton repeated them.

James Fallows reported on Wednesday, "In a live CNN interview just now, Sen. Clinton repeated, twice, the 'Sen. McCain has a lifetime of experience, I have a lifetime of experience, Sen. Obama has one speech in 2002' line. By what logic, exactly, does a member of the Democratic party include the 'Sen. McCain has a lifetime of experience' part of that sentence?"

Eric Zorn, a normally low-key columnist for the Chicago Tribune, reacted with uncharacteristic alarm: "Last week, I posted twice on a statement by Hillary Clinton that struck me as one of the lowest and most destructive things I've ever heard one candidate say about a rival candidate in the same party."

Former Senator Gary Hart was one of the many long-term party activists who was appalled by Clinton's pumping up of John McCain while patronizingly dismissing Barack Obama. He decried her comments:

By saying that only she and John McCain are qualified to lead the country, particularly in times of crisis, Hillary Clinton has broken that rule, severely damaged the Democratic candidate who may well be the party's nominee, and, perhaps most ominously, revealed the unlimited lengths to which she will go to achieve power. She has essentially said that the Democratic party deserves to lose unless it nominates her.

Former presidential candidate and Senator Bill Bradley was quoted in a London newspaper:

Bradley believes that Clinton will stop at nothing to tear down Obama even if it boosts John McCain, who was confirmed last week as the Republican nominee: "The Clintons do not do long-term planning. They’re total tacticians and right now their focus is on Obama, not McCain."

Bill Clinton presaged the strategy of his wife when he noted a few weeks ago that Senator Clinton and Senator McCain had deep respect for each other and would run a civilized campaign.

We don't know what Senator Clinton's criteria are for the crossing "the commander-in-chief threshold." The Chicago Tribune pretty much debunked Clinton's scant claims to foreign policy and military experience, and McCain wants to bomb Iran and continue the war in Iraq for a hundred years. What allowed McCain and Clinton to cross that threshold? It appears to be poor judgment in foreign policy as far as their Senate careers are concerned.

If she had not been Clinton's wife? Would anyone even know who she was? She's done nothing distinguished as a Senator. Everything Obama has, he earned himself. Perhaps not now, but Clinton got her political traction because she is Bill's wife, nothing more. Ferraro sounds like Ann Coulter, not the ground-breaking Democratic icon she once was. The exception was New Jersey Gov. James McGreevey (D), who stunningly announced in August 2004 that he is gay, described an affair with another man – the state’s former director of homeland security – and resigned effective that November (of course the real reason for his resignation was his involvement with two successful federal criminal convictions of his top two fund raisers - Charles Kushner for tax fraud and David D'Amiano for extortion). At a news conference with his wife at his side, Spitzer Monday (March 10) apologized to his family and the public over what he described only as “a private matter” but did not resign his office. The New York Times reported that the former New York attorney general, who won the governor’s office in a 2006 landslide, was caught in a federal wiretap recording, arranging to meet with a prostitute at a Washington, D.C., hotel. Political opponents quickly began calling for Spitzer to step down, accusing the well-known crusader against public corruption of hypocrisy. But gubernatorial history shows others caught or accused of having an inappropriate sexual relationship managed to complete their terms – though it sometimes cut short their political careers: * West Virginia Gov. Bob Wise (D) finished his term but did not seek re-election in 2004 after an affair with a state employee was revealed in May 2003. * Kentucky Gov. Paul Patton (D) finished his second and final term in December 2003 after admitting to an affair with a woman who claimed the governor had performed political favors to keep her nursing home open. * Maryland Gov. Parris Glendening (D) finished his second and final term after The Washington Post in 2002 revealed his affair with a woman on his staff. He later left his second wife and married his former employee. * Washington Gov. Mike Lowry (D) decided not to seek a second term in 1996 after several women accused him of sexual harassment. * Maryland Gov. Marvin Mandel (D) had an extramarital affair while in office in the 1970s and married his lover in 1974, the year he was re-elected to a second term. He was forced to resign in 1977 after being convicted of racketeering and mail fraud. * Louisiana Gov. Earl Long (D) was elected in 1948 and again in 1956 and carried on a well-known relationship with stripper Blaze Starr during his final term. There's more than just sex in the Spitzer scandal

Spitzer's troubles are far greater than just a sex scandal. In addition to his illicit contributions to a high-priced prostitution ring, he may have violated the Mann Act, as well as a federal law that prohibits moving money around in an effort to disguise its use for illegal purposes.

Whether Spitzer will be prosecuted for these offenses may not be the point. They may be more than enough pressure to force his retirement.

Republican lawmakers in NY demanded Spitzer's resignation in 48 hours or he will be impeached. Spitzer's attorneys may now be looking for a deal with federal prosecutors not to pursue charges if the Governor goes quietly.

Does Spitzer have friends and allies in the NY legislature who will stand up and defend him against impeachment? Considering the Governor's mind-boggling arrogance and recklessness in this affair, I suspect he'll find himself as lonely as Larry Craig. And that man of wide stances was only charged with a misdemeanor.

NY Republicans despise Spitzer. Spitzer has led an effective Democratic resurgence in New York that has left Republicans in dismay. The last thing NY Democrats want is to help Spitzer drag this political disaster out one minute longer than necessary, and throw all their gains away.

So Spitzer is a gonna.

If there's a bright side to Spitzer's resignation, it's this: Clinton will drop one more delegate behind Obama.

Here's an interesting reverberation from the Spitzer scandal. He's certain to resign, and when he does, Hillary will lose yet another super delegate. (Lt. Gov. David Patterson, who would take over as governor, is already a super delegate supporting Hillary).

No room for race-baiters in this party

Another reason the Republican Party is looking so attractive to Hillary, may be its scarcity of black people who would dare get in her way to "represent" black people.

To help white voters understand how an upstart darkie like Obama could successfully challenge a Clinton, Hillary's surrogate and campaign committee member, Geraldine Ferraro, dropped this bomb shell of an explanation: He's only gotten as far as he has because he's black:

"If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position," Ferraro said. "He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept."

Clinton surrogate's racist attack

Could you imagine the outcry over any Obama spokesperson saying, "Hillary's only gotten as far as she has because she's a woman?" Hillary would be organizing lynching parties over such an outrageous sexist slur.

But asked to denounce Ferraro's racist and nonsensical attack, the Clinton campaign declined. The campaign spokesperson would only say that Clintong does not agree with her finance committee member's statement.

I believe that the Iraq War is one of the worst foreign policy decisions made worldwide during my lifetime - almost 60 years. As McCain - who, incidentally, is very funny on the John Stewart show - is a cheerleader for this war and a cheerleader for the truely shocking aftermath - a million Iraq dead - and millions more refugees internally displaced or who have fled the country - for an operation that was meant to be self-financing.... As a cheerleader he does not pass my threshold test. I think it shows Clinton has poor judgement that she thinks it is OK to be McCain's cheerleader.

No need to wait until the end of the March. We have a winner. Trust Mark Karlin (who must be pitching for a job in the mainstream media given his demonizing of Hillary Clinton) to ignore reality. Mark must have missed that Clinton would ditch Blackwater and that Obama would keep Blackwater. As for Gary Hart (D-DLC); Mister Unity '08 will stop at nothing to help a non-progressive gain the White House. Calling Hart a Democratic activist works only if you prefer the Democratic Party of Grover Cleveland. Apparently Mr. Karlin would have us believe that Al From, Mr. DLC, is an Obama supporter because he likes all the empty rhetoric. Mr. Karlin should explain to everyone why he promotes a candidate who would continue to support the concept of a powerful private army. Tell us Mr. Karlin why you support the candidate who assembled the Milton Friedman Memorial Economic team to advise and direct economic policy and make Wall Street reach orgasmic heights of sheer joy.

And actually Cal, I'd like a Democrat like Grover Cleveland right now. Cleveland won the Presidency with the combined support of Democrats and reform Republicans, the "Mugwumps," who disliked the record of his corrupt opponent.

Definitely could use a strong White House cleaner like that.

Birnam woods comes to Dunsinane

Her Rovian strategy has forced the Democratic Party into an awful Sophie's choice. Either they override the primary results and persuade super delegates to choose her or she'll kick out the tent pole and, like Lieberman, she'll join the "true Americans" working for McCain.

There's little doubt in my mind such a Rovian tactic would give McCain and Clinton the White House. I see little chance for the fractured and demoralized Democratic Party to recover -- especially with both Clintons leading fellow Republicrats in the effort to destroy Obama and any others who dare to stand in the way of their Macbethian ambition.

Think back to the summer of 2006. What Democrat or political analyst would have believed Sen. Lieberman (who would be the Democratic Vice President today, if the Supreme Court hadn't prevented all the votes in Florida from being counted) would abandon the Democrats and join the Republicans in trying to keep the White House in their bloody corrupt hands?

As insane as the scenario of Clinton joining McCain's ticket is, it's hard to deny that our country has become insane.

Either Democratic Party leaders bow to First Lady Macbeth's efforts to steal the nomination or she will join McCain. Either way, she will wreck the Democratic Party for a long time to come. Karl Rove will have achieved his dream of one-party rule, with the help of the Clintons. How ironic.

I'm sure this was not Clinton's original plan. She clearly thought she'd have the nomination in hand by Feb. 5, without breaking a sweat.

She should never have listened to those three witches who flattered and assured her how how easy it would be to take the crown. But now that Obama has come with Birnam woods to Dunsinane, First Lady Macbeth's egomania leaves her no option but to fight to the tragic end.

There is a new agey question that asks, "How would you act if you knew you couldn't fail?" Answer: Like the Clintons. I don't know what Bush '41 and Clinton '42 did to benefit Katrina victims, but they sure had ample opportunity to hatch a plan for '08. The Spitzer indictment is the first in a series of efforts to blackmail and intimidate super delegates using information obtained by federal wiretaps. The fact that Spitzer is a Clinton Super makes it all the more vicious. Further, the Clintons' floating the VP spot to Obama is the "you're either with us or against us" offer. Obama's refusal, yesterday, to play their game make the road to Denver even more damaging and dangerous. Obama '08 3rd party candidate -- pray for him

As much as I love a good conspiracy, this is not one. Spitzer is a super delegate who has endorsed Hillary Clinton.

While there's no gain for Clinton to destroy Spitzer, there are some negatives. For one, the press now is distracted from her message on how thoroughly inadequate Obama is.

For another, it's shoved one of the nation's top Democrats into the spotlight of hypocrisy and sexual crimes -- which until yesterday, seemed exclusively reserved for Republicans and their Bible-thumping shills.

This is becoming such a juvenile process with all the Billary and Monica jokes. Quit wasting our time! This is a very serious topic and cuts to the heart of the upcoming general election. Are we (Progressives) going to let the topic d'jour be "who's fit to continue the neverending War o'Terra?", or are we going to link the Invasion (and the decision to authorize military force in Iraq) to the destruction of our economy, our civil liberties and our belief in good government? Quit with the ugliness, folks. If you need ugly, just look at photos from Abu Ghraib, or from the aftermath of Katrina in New Orleans. Those of you who continue with the Feminazi line of fire should go call Rush Limbaugh and hang with that crowd. There's plenty to hit the Clinton campaign with, without stooping to the level of morons. Give it a try.

In the past I purchased premiums and made cash contributions to Buzzflash. No more. Over forever. Isn't it ironic that the people who preach unity do so by demonizing their opponent.

Talk Left looks promising. This site has really tanked lately with all the hysterical ranting and the (apparent) infestation of paid GOP trolls, complete with the freeper lingo and such enlightening dialogue as "Billary", "Clintonistas", etc. etc. and the tired, recyled Bill and Monica jokes...

Hillary is no great prize, but to pretend that Obama is some kind of great saviour is also the height of illusion. Remember, this is the guy who has called Joe Lieberman his "mentor" in the Senate and went on the stump to promote Joe over Ned Lamont.

When all is said and done, I'll enthusiastically support either Obama or Clinton - but really, setting the campaign rhetoric and the marketing aside, they are both pretty much cut from the same cloth.

... with pretty much everything you said, although (apart from the trolls) I think there's a significant group on the left that genuinely hates Hillary. I'll be voting for whichever one wins the nomination, but the Clinton-haters make it more difficult than it should be, and I wouldn't be surprised if some people stay home because of it. If Obama wins the nomination but loses the election, you can bet they won't blame Obama or the right-wing smear machine - they'll be pointing their shaking fingers straight at Hillary.

As for BF, they've alienated a significant portion of their readership. They'll do fine with their fundraising for a while (probably a couple months after the general election - while interest is very high), but it'll be a very tough slog after that.

I was talking about Buzzflash compromising their neutrality with their resulting bias. As a Liberal Democrat. I can only wonder what Buzzflash would have said about Obama if they had instead chosen Hillary as their official candidate? I intend to remain neutral and make my own choice. I don't expect anything but prejudice against Hillary if I visit Buzzflash now. Sadly, before long I'll no doubt be reading something Buzzflash said on Media Matters for America.

Since Hillary will be the Democratic nominee for president, have you considered what damage you do to her and to the chances for a Democratic victory in November by your constant attacks on her. I know you think that it is cute to continue your sexist rants day after day, but it you (and the other knee jerk liberals who write this crap) who will make sure that McCain is elected. Please try to pull your heads out of your collective a$$e$ and act like adults for a change. These daily sexist rants have no place in the serious business of saving our country from the Republicans. I, for one, miss the peace and prosperity that we enjoyed when the Clintons were last in the White House.

If Hillary Clinton is the nominee, she will hand the election to John McCain. Sir, do you also miss these facts about the Clinton Administration - after Clinton was elected in 1992, until he left office in 1998: The GOP gained 48 seats in the House. The GOP gained 8 seats in the Senate. The GOP gained 11 Governorships. The GOP gained 1,254 state legislative seats. 439 Democrat office holders bacame Republicans. source - The National Conference of State Legislatures. Not to mention, his impeachment could well have cost Al Gore the presidency in 2000. A landslide for Democrats would have taken Florida completely out of the equation. It was not until the election of 2006 that some of this damage was repaired. It was not all "peace and prosperity." And, I am not a "sexist." I am a woman almost 74 years old, who has been involved in politics for over 50 years. If you sir, think the Clinton Legacy was all "peace and prosperity" you have a short memory.

Al Gore and more

My dear Ms W~ Al Gore won the presidency in 2000. Why he conceded and failed to take office is beyond me. Quit trying to blame it on anyone other than the rigged voting machines and the corrupt Supreme Court -- and Al Gore's ill-informed decisions on requesting recounts and prematurely conceding. The sexist reference is to Mark Karlin and the other so-called "editors" of Buzzflash who inundate us daily with more and more damaging, elitist anti-Hillary clap-trap. BTW, Hillary has won states (all blue states) with 260 electoral votes, while Obama has won states (mostly red states -- that will remain red states in November) with 191 electoral votes. In case you don't know, we elect presidents through the electoral college rather than the popular vote. Also, Obama is only ahead by 1% in the popular vote total. And they are currently separated by only slightly more than 100 pledged delegates. Think super delegates. there are 850 of them. The purpose of the super-delegate system is to act as a check on ideologically extreme or inexperienced candidates. It also gives power to people who have a vested interested in party policies: elected leaders. Because the primary and caucus voters do not have to be active members of the party (in New Hampshire they can sign up and sign out going-and-coming at the polls), the super-delegate system has been called a safety-value.

What is "clap-trap" is your deceptive use of electoral votes from the states that Obama and Clinton won. No one but Hiliary's hatchetmen are saying that Obama won't win those blue states. You guys ought to be ashamed spouting such transparent falsehoods.

What we need, and what Obama has shown he can do, is to turn out large numbers of voters in the red states and take them away from the Republicans in the November election. That's something no reasoned person believes Hillary will accomplish.

Also:

In almost half our states, you have to be a registered Democrat to vote in their primaries/caucuses.

In 2006 the now defunct "centerist majority" poltical movement posted the following on its Web site:

Goal One is the election of a Unity Ticket for President and Vice-President of the United States in 2008 – headed by a woman and/or man from each major party (emphasis added by me) or by an independent who presents a Unity Team from both parties.

Sounded like a Clinton/McCain ticket to me then and it still sounds like a Clinton/McCain ticket to me now.

The number of CONSERVATIVES who hate McCain is only topped by the number of CONSERVATIVES who hate Hillary..... I can think of NO QUICKER WAY of OBAMA winning than to put Hillary and John on the same ticket. A MATCH MADE IN LIBERAL HEAVEN. No LIBERAL would even think of voting for the WAR MONGER McCain, and attaching Hillary... THANK YOU LORD FOR MAKING FOOLS!!!!

the fact that there are a whole lot of Democrats who don't like Hillary for one reason or other. The idea of her "presumptiveness" has worn thin, her trash-and-burn tactics are beyond the pale, and the idea of she and Bill trying to reframe the debate by offering Obama the VP slot is laughable.

I'm Not Laughing

I'm so over Hillary's crap, and talk about getting a pass from the media -- I don't see an awful lot of pressing on this "threshhold for president" invention of hers and exactly what she's done to go over this in-her-mind-only line. I'm one of those who doesn't like Hillary for a lot of reasons and I won't support her just because I'm a woman. My reasons for not liking her go way back, so it's issues from way before this election. But when she started cozying up to McBush, praising him and putting herself in McBush's "league," that's when I'd had it. Fine, you're in McBush's league, then go be on his ticket. That ticket is one I can just about see. I'm not laughing at her VP offer to Obama. I understand what she's trying to do, but aside from it making her look like she doesn't know what she's talking about (he's not ready but he's ready enough), it completely flies in the face of the facts: He's ahead, in all ways. He won more states, he has more delegates and he leads in the popular vote. He's ahead -- what part of this is not clear?

The reputation of presidents is made by the people who surround him... or her. Bush is surrounded by a century of experience. Even his father would say he exhibited poor judgement in choosing experienced people who also happened to be delusional. Harold Ickes? Ugh. Putting Obama down with one breath, then mentioning him as a running mate with the next? Poor advice from experienced people of questionable judgement.
