Brent Budowsky: Iraq Descending To Chaos. Military Times Calls For Rumsfeld To Go.

A BUZZFLASH GUEST CONTRIBUTION
by Brent Budowsky

To save any semblance of rationality for American policy in Iraq new leaders, a Democratic Congress and the resignation of Secretary Rumsfeld are urgently needed.

This past week something extraordinariny and ominous happened. An American soldier was kidnapped. Going all out to leave no one behind, our mlitary established checkpoints. What happened next? The government in Iraq, under the control of pro-Iranian Shi'ite leaders, surrending to the will of murderous Shi'ite militia, ordered the checkpoint closed.

This is the government that more than 2800 Americans have given their lives for. This is the government of rampant corruption. This is the government that has virtually no police force to speak in the fourth year of this war and whatever police force does exist is heavily infiltrated by even more of these murderous military.

Meanwhile secretarian violence and bloodshed continue to rise in November and every day brings news of more carnage and corruption.

And the Republican Congress now wants to cashier even the Republican Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction, to protect those who have been stealing, pillaging, misusing, losing and corrupting more than $10 billion of our money.

Now, in one of the most extraordinary and important moments in the history of this war, the Military Times newspapers are calling for the removal of Secretary of Defense Don Rumsfeld.

Marine Corps Times, Army Times, Air Force Times and Navy Times are taking a principled and courageous stand sending a powerful pre-election message about what must be done.

In fact, what I and others have been arguing for some time is that what the Military Times now publicly calls for, is what the commanders and most troops have believed for some time.

Lack of armor.

Lack of protected vehicles.

Lack of bandages and helmets.

Lack of adequate pay for troops.

Lack of respect for commanders from the President and his neoconservatives who are now cutting and running themselves by blaming each other for their shared value.

Arrogance, dishonesty and delusion from Republican leaders in Washington.

Corrupted Iraq Reconstruction.

Crony deals, stolen money, wasted programs in which American troops give their lives and limbs for a government dominated by Iranian supported militia. While the blood of our troops is spilled multi-millionaire crooks, with ties to one party Republican government lard their bank accounts, and use our money to pay for their super bowl parties.

As the Miltary Times editorial says, for years the sergeants and captains have reported back that their urgent efforts to train Iraqi troops were not succeeding because those they trained were not loyal to the cause, and were in it for the money.

As the Military Times editorial says, the Secretary of Defense is a disaster and it is time for him to go.

As Vanity Fair reports, the pathetic theorists of neoconservativism are now turning against the President, saying they would have opposed the war if they knew how he would mismanage it. Meanwhile the President parades around the country name calling Democrats, and the pro-Iranian government of Iraq stiffs American troops, while the Republican power barons in Washington stiff the Inspector General to protect the crooks who pay for their campaigns.

This is like the end of one of those old Fred Astaire movies where everyone is on the stage as the curtain closes: Iraq mismanagement, the culture of corruption, the partisan president dishing his dirt, the Republican Congress trying to gut the Inspector General, the Republican candidates drenching the aiwaves with lying and smearing ads, neoconservatives running for cover, the intelligence community saying the war creates more terrorists, commanders warning of the descent to chaos, and while the carnage continues the Vice President makes his cameo appearance saying that he was always right and this catastrophic policy must stay the course.

MIlitary Times, Marines Corps Times, Army Times, Air Force Times, Navy Times: they speak for the troops, they speak for the families, they speak for the commanders and it is time for this madness to end.

I cannot understand why the Bushies think we really care that Saddham gets the death penality. This does not compare to the deaths and maiming of American service men and women and the deaths of the Iraqis. This bubblehead must be impeached, then stand trial for treason.

Many interesting comments. The one immediately following this post, however, is not one of them.

Sorry.

MANY OF YOU WILL SAY THIS IS NOT RELEVANT TO THE ARTICLE

MAY NOT TOTALLY BE RELEANT TO ARTICLE-BUT RELEVANT TO THE EMPTY EXPLANATIONS OF THE WAR

I HAVE EMAILED THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY AND THE UNITED NATIONS-THIS TIME WITH A TRACER ON MY EMAIL. STRANGE COINCIDENCES AND ODD BEHAVIOR IS TELLING ME THAT SOMEONE (SUCH AS LOCAL POLICE DEPARTMENTS, AND STATE LEVEL POLICE DEPARTMENT EMPLOYEES) IS READING MY EMAILS BEFORE THE RECIPIENT IS OPENING AND READING THEM-IF THE RECIPEINT IS GETTING THEM AT ALL. I THOUGHT I HAD MADE SOME VERY-VERY STRONG ALLEGATIONS SUCH AS THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY, THE US DEPT OF EDUCATION, AND THE UNITED NATIONS FOR ME NOT TO RECEIVE ANY ACKNOWLEDGEMENT. IT SEEMS TO BE AN UNWRITTEN RULE THAT ONLY THE GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES CAN CONTACT THE PEOPLE ON THE FEDERAL LEVELS AND TELL THEIR OWN VERSION OF THE COMPLAINTS. DEAN OF STUDENTS TOLD ME I WAS NOT IN A POSITION TO MAKE A COMPLAINT AGAINST THE DANCE PROFESSORS-EXCEPT WITH THE SCHOOL, I MADE A COMPLAINT NOT ONLY AGAISNT THE DANCE PROFESSORS BUT ALSO AGAINST HER. THEY TIRIED TO GET LAWS CHANGED TO ESCAPE JUSTICE TAMPERING WITH MY INFORMATION AND EDUCATION RIGHTS-SO FAR THEY HAD MANAGED TO ESCAPE PROSECUTION. I DO NOT THINK THIS IS HAPPENING TO JUST ME. THIS DEAN OF STUDENTS DID NOT WANT THE FEDERAL PEOPLE TO HEAR FROM ME WITHOUT HER INPUT. I LATER DISCOVERED SHE HAD A GOOD REASON FOR NOT WANTING ME TO GET MY COMPLAINTS TO PEOPLE AT THE FEDERAL LEVELS. THIS IS HAPPENING TO A WHOLE BUNCH OF PEOPLE-NOT JUST ME-AND THE FEDS ARE ACTING ON THE LIES THAT IS BEING TOLD BY LOCAL AND STATE POLICE. THAT IS WHAT EVENTUALLY LEAD UP TO THE TERRORISM AND THE WAR-AND ALL THIS OTHER STUFF GOING ON. IT IS STARTING WITH LOCAL POLICE DEPARTMENTS LYING-AND MAKING UP FALSE DOCUMENTS. HAS ANYONE ELSE FIND IT STRANGE THAT YOUR EMAILS ARE GETTING IGNORED? OR THE OUTCOME OF YOUR REQUEST IS NOT EVEN RELEVANT TO YOUR COMPLAINT?

Fantastic

Can we go after the rest of the incompetent, immoral, war-mongering, profiteering criminals now? Preferably at a war crimes trial at the Hague for crimes against humanity?

Than maybe we can re-investigate 9/11 too. Because anyone that still believes bush&co. wasn't involved with the execution of 9/11 by now - still believes we're winning in Iraq and Dumbsfeld is doing a "fantastic" job.

Wonderful!

The timing could not be better. Might it even make a dent in Sunday's coming MSM feeding frenzy over Saddam's conviction?

WE OBVIOUSLY NEED A 4-BY-EIGHT

RATHER THAN JUST A SIMPLE 2-BY-FOUR BETWEEN THE EYES TO GET OUR ATTENTION OFF THE VARIOUS AND SUNDRY CROTCHES AND BEDROOM WINDOWS WE HAVE BEEN PEEKING AT, SO WE CAN SEE WHAT A DISGRACEFUL MESS WE HAVE MADE IN THE REST OF THE WORLD.

please let these sleaze balls be that 4-by-eight.

please...please...please

Keep Rumsfeld right where he is

Since the beginning of this occupation, I will not dignify what the United States government is doing to and in Iraq by labeling it a "war," many of my Democratic friends have said that we, meaning the American people, ie taxpayers, should give our troops the "tools" necessary to get the job done.

What job? The subjugation of the Iraqi people?

And what tools? More body armor, ammunition, armored vehicles, and so on, that "our" troops may visit more death, more destruction upon the heads of Iraq's civilian population? Please.

Why remove a rank incompetent whose policies are undermining military morale, hence its willingness to wage illegal wars or continue immoral military occupations? Perhaps our soldiers in the field are beginning to think the unthinkable:mutiny. That will bring this Republican house of cards tumbling down faster than a thousand Mark Foleys or a million Jack Abramoffs.

Keep the parsimonious bean-counter Donald Rumsfeld right where he is.

Split Decision

While I would visit upon the Repugnants all the wrath of an outraged electorate/citizenry, I am loathe to visit upon the innocent troops the "duty" of executing (yeah, intended) the policies - either in Iraq OR in the USA upon their eventual return (dis-spirited, PTSS, perhaps maimed, maybe even in coffins) - the villainous machinations of those whom we should have impeached & imprisoned in 2003.

Nor would I willingly suffer the inevitable expansion of those troops' view of their "mission" into "Kill 'em all, etc."

re Keep Rumsfeld right where he is

Thanks, ETS, for your comment " by labeling it a war...". Makes ALL the difference to call it what it is/was: An Illegal Invasion , & Continuing Occupation - fostering increasing resistance!

It's pretty disgusting . . .

How the neocons are running like rats on this sinking ship of Iraq. Mismanagement? A fundamental problem is that the US forces never had any intention of providing for anything other than RNC donors, be they oil companies, private security firms, Halliburton, MCI and telcoms, and anyone else who was willing to pay bucks for access in the taxpayer dollar giveaway. The Iraqis after months of hoping for the best learned the hard way what was going on and have decided to fight back. The mismanagement was intertwined with intent: rob and steal. Surprise, surprise that it didn't go well.

We should be happy that we got Rumsfeld with his arrogance and bluster. A half a million troops might have truly crushed any resistance to the rape of Iraq and its assets. Now it is finished. Abu Ghraib, rapes and killings have crushed any possibility to regain the trust and confidence of the Iraqis. And simply put, there is no way to effectively exploit Iraqi oil without massive brute force, massive brute force that is absent any type of moral consideration. Massive brute force that exposes the US misadventure for what it is and always was, a 21rst century neo Colonialism by so called neo-Cons, neo con simply meaning the newest name of a long list of appellations for shuckster, hustler, trickster and con-artist.

Unfortunately, the Dems will still be stuck in this :"We can't admit defeat" Vietnam syndrome, so they will yet again let down the people even in the unlikely event that Rove doesn't manage to steal the elections. So Bush will continue the genocidal path, while stripping Americans of their rights, while people are looking for some glimpse of optimism in the tsunami of proof of corruption, hypocrisy, kleptomania, myopia, and sloth.

Let it be known: Tuesday will be the official end of the American democratic facade. Welcome to the Terrordome, forecasted by Bush a while back: "Huh, huh, a dictatorship would be a heckuva lot easier . . . just so long as I'm the dictator."

You often get the government you deserve. And the failure of people to question buildings falling straight down in front of their very eyes is damn incontrovertible evidence that they/you/we have not the capacity to truly challenge election results, results that will be far more ephemeral and ethereal than the smoldering remains of citizens and unaccounted for fires burning for months in America's most densely populated and most famous city.

Sorry.
