Brent Budowsky: Bombshell: Bush Will Request More Troops For Iraq, While NIE Says Iraq Makes Terrorism Worse.

A BUZZFLASH GUEST CONTRIBUTION
by Brent Budowsky

Democratic Leaders in the House and Senate should call for open public hearings and if necessary a secret session of the Congress to address urgent issues of concern to our troops, military families, military communities, security moms and all Americans concerned about our security.

In the closing days of the 2006 campaign the failures of the Bush Administration in the Iraq War will come to center stage as the dangers and future of the policy raise grave questions.

Earlier this week it was learned that American force structures have been so destabilized by the commitment to Iraq, and readiness of U.S. forces reduced to such drastic levels that after the election new troop requests for Iraq are inevitable.

Even General Abizaid hinted that after the election there will almost certainly have to be new forces committed to Iraq.

The Reserves and National Guard, who have been very hard hit by deployment practices, and their families throughout the nation are facing even more instability and hardship.

This is the Bush November Surprise, though it seems apparent that there are some within the military so concerned about the course of events that they have begun either hinting it, from those who want to condition the public to accept it, or leaking it, from those who want to prevent this new escalation from taking effect.

Now, the New York Times reports a classified National Intelligence Estimate, representing the views of the broad intelligence community, clearly stating that the Iraq War has worsened the terrorist dangers, not lessened them, as the Bush Aministration has incorrectly stated.

While we do not know the source of the Times story, and can expect a new round of hostile attacks on the patriotism of the media for reporting these truths, it appears the National Intelligence Estimate was probably leaked to alert the Nation to another grave danger.

Taking these two events together:

First, we were told not long ago that there would be troop reductions towards the end of the year. Now we learn there was one set of troop increases in recent weeks, with another set of troop increases which is being kept secret until after the election.

Second, we not only learn of this National Intelligence Estimate that demonstrates a clear consensus throughout the intelligence community that the Iraq War has made the terrorist problem worse, but since this estimate was originally prepared in April, all of the recent statements to the contrary were simply untrue, and those who made them, knew it.

It is high time that Congress initiate a serious public debate, of the magnitude of the Fulbright hearings during Vietnam, and that this debate not be kept secret until after the election is over.

The Administration should tell the country, honestly, openly, and NOW whether there will be additional Army, Marine Corps, Guard or Reserve forces sent to Iraq. It would be reprehensible to our democracy, insulting to our troops and their families, and increase the credibility crisis that that has done so much damage to keep this secret until the vote, then announce it, after the election.

Military families, military communities, and our troops should know honestly, clearly and NOW what further sacrifice will be asked of them.

The Adminstration should publicly release a redacted summary of the National Intelligence Estimate because our country has a right to know, NOW, whether the intelligence agencies believe that the Iraq War has been destructive to the war against the terrorists. It would be reprehensible to our democracy, insulting to the American people, and increase the credibility crisis even further if this defining report is kept secret, and continues to leak out.

If there have been public statements by senior officials that directly contradict this important National Intelligence Estimate, when they publicly stated the Iraq War reduced the dangers of terrorism, while they privately knew it increased the dangers of terrorism, high level investigations are warranted.

Democratic Leaders in the House and Senate should immediately call for hearings and if necessary a secret session of the Congress to determine the truth, the implications of the truth, and to make this election a referendum on the defining issue of our times.

British and Canadian tank movements...

... are going on! Guess what? The leaving Iraq! Poor Amis, you have only one ally left in the phony war and genocide: Israel.

I hope that United Skunks Government is attacking Iran, by that the 1.7 million Sadr militias will end the Iraqi occupation and their will be no supply for the United Skunks troops. Prepare for 100.000 American soldiers to die an shoveled into nameless graves - like dogs.

Once the Iranians have sunk the United Skunks pride, the air carriers, which only work fine on unarmed civilians - the world will be freed from Zionazis and the influence of United Skunks *) United Skunks = U.S.

What NIE On Iraq War Has Bush Liked?

Bad news for The Bush/Cheney cable? No problemo. Simply ignore the report. Redact the redactions until the report no longer approximates anything close to the truth.

Intelligence estimates are very handy when the threat of enemy attack is imminent. They are extremely useful when a new conflict threatens to alter the rules of engagment with the introduction of more advanced weaponry. As in-- what will the response of the other side be when another side changes course?

This scenario could involve a new use of nuclear weapons on the battlefield. Theoretically, this would lower the threshold for an all-out nuclear war. Strangely, it's at this point that a NIE becomes most paradoxically unuseful.

Not to worry, though. I'm surprised anyone even reads NIEs anymore. This Administration continues to make policy independent of reasoned logic and public opinion. To the neo-cons, the world should be making their own NIEs of us, not the other way around.

Yeah...a few "leaks" attributed to sources both inside and outside The Pentagon's High Command have mentioned plans to launch a sea and air blockade of Iran. Ahmadinejad and his stubborn mullahs will probably continue to refuse negotiations over Iran's nuclear research programs. This is hardly a shock to anyone, and, until now, caused nary a ripple of concern in the MSM. Besides, Bush can always employ the word JFK used -- quarantine -- for his blockade: claiming that the US is only trying to stop deliveries of further materials for Iraq's weapons production. Meanwhile, the US can continue to treat its 25+ years of embargoes as a separate issue.

Call it what you will -- a quarantine is a blockade by every other name -- and thus an act of war by international standards. Iran will protest this gross violation of its sovereignty before the world.

Meanwhile, the Air Force and Navy will launch cruise missiles and drop nuclear bunker buster bombs to destroy Iran's deep military command structures and nuclear research facilites.

Technology already exists to build nukes that burrow themselves into the ground before detonation.

The world will probably complain long and loud about this new use of nukes by the US. However -- in some atomic version of the 1938 Munich Pact -- the major powers will agree that this nuking of Iran will be viewed as the mere equivalent of an underground nuclear test. The UN Security Council and NATO will accept the fallacy that the release of fallout from an "NBB" can be be kept to a minimum. The US, in turn, will promise that the world has seen the last of its nuclear war on terror.

The US will also claim that radiation and blast effects from an NBB or two can be kept well below levels that would contaminate Iran's oil reserves. That being the case, few will give a shit about Iran's immediate future -- except the insurgents we're dealing with now. They will, however, be joined by more Muslims than ever before. Yet another reason to necessitate a more concentrated American presence in the "Islamo-fascist Crescent": made up of Iran, Shiite Iraq, and the Shiite and Wahabbi dominated portion of eastern Saudi Arabia. For people who want a holy war and Armageddon in the Persian Gulf and Holy Land, the conditions couldn't be better.

Would such a sequence of events be more than just some worst case scenario? Extending the current insurgency into Iran will "justify" the need to re-institute the draft man (and woman)into a larger US military that will be in and around the Persian Gulf for years to come.

Many current Pentagon critics of the war may be swayed by the sheer numbers of people under arms. Ultimately, this is what they've trained their entire careers for.

If the draft is unpopular (and nearly all drafts are) the tools are in place to handle dissenters pretty much the same way enemy non-combantants are handled at Gitmo.

Any act of disloyalty to the US government in defying "lawful" conscription will be taken as an act of treason and the subsequent stripping of US citizenship. This will apply to any and all who chooses to oppose this phase of the new "New World Order" -- native born or not. And the US DOD will no doubt guarantee them the same benefits package that all the other Gitmo detainees get.

Since The Iraq War Makes Terrorism Worse

Troops Out Now!

More troops to Iraq

It does make sense to send more troops to Iraq, if you plan to start another war with Iran. It does seem that bush & co. are planning just that.

Maybe This Will Be The Needed Reality Check

The problem, as I view it, is that virtually all the actions of this President in the region are fomenting instability and hostility that may soon reach a point of no return. Even worse, the efforts of this administration are failing to create a wedge between extremist leaders and their populations. On the contrary, the language used by this administration, coupled with the perception that the U.S. is engaged in unwarranted and ideological aggression, has served to push otherwise moderate populations into alignment with radical governments and extremist organizations.

As I attempt to grasp the magnitude of allowing this President unfettered authority between now and the end of his second term, I can't help but wonder what it would take to dissuade a man with his level of certainty and conviction from undertaking the actions that will facilitate the ideations he seems convinced have been presented to him through a mix of fate and faith.

History may well record this chapter as a period of unparalleled extremism. Worse yet, the United States may well be viewed as the primary force in facilitating that eventuality. George Bush, when asked about his legacy, seems content to respond that while he can't predict the future he believes his actions will prove to be pivotal. He may well be correct but, in this instance, I would suggest he recall the expression, "Be careful what you wish for".
