Cindy Sheehan: 'Good Riddance Attention Whore'

A BUZZFLASH GUEST CONTRIBUTION
by Cindy Sheehan

I have endured a lot of smear and hatred since Casey was killed and especially since I became the so-called "Face" of the American anti-war movement. Especially since I renounced any tie I have remaining with the Democratic Party, I have been further trashed on such "liberal blogs" as the Democratic Underground. Being called an "attention whore" and being told "good riddance" are some of the more milder rebukes.

I have come to some heartbreaking conclusions this Memorial Day Morning. These are not spur of the moment reflections, but things I have been meditating on for about a year now. The conclusions that I have slowly and very reluctantly come to are very heartbreaking to me.

The first conclusion is that I was the darling of the so-called left as long as I limited my protests to George Bush and the Republican Party. Of course, I was slandered and libeled by the right as a "tool" of the Democratic Party. This label was to marginalize me and my message. How could a woman have an original thought, or be working outside of our "two-party" system?

However, when I started to hold the Democratic Party to the same standards that I held the Republican Party, support for my cause started to erode and the "left" started labeling me with the same slurs that the right used. I guess no one paid attention to me when I said the issue of peace and people dying for no reason is not a matter of "right or left," but "right and wrong."

I am deemed a radical because I believe partisan politics should be left to the wayside when hundreds of thousands of people are dying for a war based on lies that is supported by Democrats and Republican alike. It amazes me that people who are sharp on the issues and can zero in like a laser beam on lies, misrepresentations, and political expediency when it comes to one party refuse to recognize it in their own party. Blind party loyalty is dangerous, whatever side it occurs on. People of the world look on us Americans as jokes because we allow our political leaders so much murderous latitude; if we don't find alternatives to this corrupt "two" party system, our Representative Republic will die and be replaced with what we are rapidly descending into with nary a check or balance: a fascist corporate wasteland. I am demonized because I don't see party affiliation or nationality when I look at a person, I see that person's heart. If someone looks, dresses, acts, talks, and votes like a Republican, then why do they deserve support just because he/she calls him/herself a Democrat?

I have also reached the conclusion that if I am doing what I am doing because I am an "attention whore," then I really need to be committed. I have invested everything I have into trying to bring peace with justice to a country that wants neither. If an individual wants both, then normally he/she is not willing to do more than walk in a protest march or sit behind his/her computer criticizing others. I have spent every available cent I got from the money a "grateful" country gave me when they killed my son and every penny that I have received in speaking or book fees since then. I have sacrificed a 29 year marriage and have traveled for extended periods of time away from Casey's brother and sisters and my health has suffered and my hospital bills from last summer (when I almost died) are in collection because I have used all my energy trying to stop this country from slaughtering innocent human beings. I have been called every despicable name that small minds can think of and have had my life threatened many times.

The most devastating conclusion that I reached this morning, however, was that Casey did indeed die for nothing. His precious lifeblood drained out in a country far away from his family who loves him, killed by his own country that is beholden to and run by a war machine that even controls what we think. I have tried ever since he died to make his sacrifice meaningful. Casey died for a country that cares more about who will be the next American Idol than how many people will be killed in the next few months while Democrats and Republicans play politics with human lives. It is so painful to me to know that I bought into this system for so many years and Casey paid the price for that allegiance. I failed my boy and that hurts the most.

I have also tried to work within a peace movement that often puts personal egos above peace and human life. This group won't work with that group; he won't attend an event if she is going to be there; and why does Cindy Sheehan get all the attention anyway? It is hard to work for peace when the very movement that is named after it has so many divisions.

Our brave young men and women in Iraq have been abandoned there indefinitely by their cowardly leaders who move them around like pawns on a chessboard of destruction and the people of Iraq have been doomed to death and fates worse than death by people worried more about elections than people. However, in 5, 10, or 15 years, our troops will come limping home in another abject defeat and 10 or 20 years from then, our children's children will be seeing their loved ones die for no reason, because their grandparents also bought into this corrupt system. George Bush will never be impeached because if the Democrats dig too deeply, they may unearth a few skeletons in their own graves and the system will perpetuate itself in perpetuity.

I am going to take whatever I have left and go home. I am going to go home and be a mother to my surviving children and try to regain some of what I have lost. I will try to maintain and nurture some very positive relationships that I have found in the journey that I was forced into when Casey died and try to repair some of the ones that have fallen apart since I began this single-minded crusade to try and change a paradigm that is now, I am afraid, carved in immovable, unbendable, and rigidly mendacious marble.

Camp Casey has served its purpose. It's for sale. Anyone want to buy five beautiful acres in Crawford, Texas? I will consider any reasonable offer. I hear George Bush will be moving out soon, too... which makes the property even more valuable.

This is my resignation letter as the "face" of the American anti-war movement. This is not my "Checkers" moment, because I will never give up trying to help people in the world who are harmed by the empire of the good old U.S. of A, but I am finished working in, or outside of this system. This system forcefully resists being helped and eats up the people who try to help it. I am getting out before it totally consumes me or anymore people that I love and the rest of my resources.

Good-bye America... you are not the country that I love and I finally realized no matter how much I sacrifice, I can't make you be that country unless you want it.

It's up to you now.

Thank you, Cindy

Get some much-needed rest and enjoy your children. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you have done... PEACE.

A PATRIOT -S- TO MRS SHEEHAN

There can be little pretense anymore that Democrates and Republicans are anything more than faithful factions of a single PARTY dedicated to fossil fuel and Arms Contractor lobbies an to the U.$. as a global empire. WAKE UP AND SMELL THE FASISIM AMERICA ITS THE NEW WORLD ODOUR!

Thank you Cindy!

I thank you so much, Cindy, for all that you have done. I have watched you as you suffered mightily because you spoke truth to power, I have seen the grief on your face, the sorrow in your eyes. I see the burden you carry because of your son's death, and I know that he would never want you to feel such life-killing guilt. Let it go, you have done so much for so many, you have paid your dues. Go home and find your own peace and know that your son loves you and that wherever he is, he is aware of all that you have done. You will see your beloved Casey again someday.....This country has been taken over by a gang of thugs, and it is no longer a democracy, if it ever was. I believe that it will get much worse before it gets better, but I know that it will get better. God is watching, and he will come to our rescue, at the last. Someday Cindy, and not to far from now, we will live in a just world, a world of peace and harmony, where people share and work together for the common good of all. This is not wishful thinking, it is fact. I love you Cindy, don't worry, don't despair. Keep telling the truth, wherever you are, it is our saving grace. Regina Carpenter

I am so sad over what you

I am so sad over what you have had to endure in the cause of peace. How terrible that people who consider themselves Christian can be so hateful and violent. I can't blame you for wanting some peace for yourself now. You have suffered a lot.

May I make a suggestion? Look up on the internet Fr. John Dear, a Catholic priest who practices total non-violence--toward people, animals and the earth. He has even been jailed for anti-war protests. If you write to him I'm sure he will respond. He has written many books on peace and non-violence. I think he is an inspirational figure.

Goodbye CIndy

I'm truly sorry you had to go through so much negative flack and I hope we see you on the frontlines again soon. But --- where did you get the idea that the Democratic Party is now or ever has been the "left"? Despite what the right wing wants us to think, it ain't so.

Cindy Sheehan

Dearest Cindy,

You really did your best. You braved through the mourning period of your son's death and took up the fight on his, his comrades in arms and the entire peace loving members of our country to bring this illegal war to an end and to stop the killing and bloodshed. You are a tribute to what America should be all about.

I am an American citizen who has been living in Canada for the past 22 years. Yet, I follow politics and policy in my home country constantly, and I vote in every election. I followed your brave fight for the past two years, and applauded you wildly whenever I heard you speak. In my own small way, I sent in donations to Camp Casey and the Gold Star Families to help support your work. You have been an inspiration to many other ex-pats living in Canada who have been embarrassed by the murderous activities of this president and his administration.

I thank you for all you have done and wish you many years of personal peace and contentment surrounded by the love of your family and friends.

To a Brave, Intelligent Woman Who Did What Only She Could

Dear Cindy,
You do not know me, but I have followed your efforts to put a name and face on the horrors of the Iraq war. I watched while you -- as I did in the 60's -- petitioned your government for redress of your rightful grievances, believing that the American system of government would not abide what was going on, if only they became aware of it.
Yours was an honorable and noble effort, just as your son Casey's efforts were honorable and noble, far moreso than those who put him in harms way in service of lies, and far, far moreso than those who would deny the truth of your message by disparaging the messenger.
Take not their insults to heart. Good woman, you did the right thing by the light of your understanding of how American government and American social movements function. Alas, like me, you have come to realize that what we have been taught to believe about our government is not true: It is not a representative democracy where the populace decides who will lead the country; it is not dedicated to decency and the high-minded principles we were taught to associate with our country. And the anti-war movement is so easily co-opted by existing political organizations that mouth the solutions even as they sustain the economic system that survives on a constant state of conflict, casting our brave, naive young men into the furnace of war.
You are correct. The Democratic Party is as much a slave of the corporations that make profits from war as the Republicans. Neither seeks the radical re-formation of our political and economic systems that is necessary to bring about the end of the horrors our government is perpetrating -- and has perpetrated for most of its life -- upon the peoples of the world.
You have fought the good fight against insurmountable odds, Cindy. Your struggle has given you a bitter insight into the reality of the American politico-economic system. Take your pain and make your way proudly home, where-ever that may be. Know in your heart that you have borne witness more and better than anyone else to the mendacity of our socio-political system. Casey would be proud of you.
May you find peace and comfort.
- Rolf Wiegand

I can certainly understand

I can certainly understand your despair. All of us in the peace movement feel it sometimes, and I can only imagine how much worse it is for you.

As a member of CodePink I would like to say that we in my particular chapter, always supported you. We were always there for you when you came here. We surrounded you in an attempt to be a buffer from the right wing animals who would call you terrible names.

We are out there working for peace every day. The peace movement, with no draft, is small enough. We did not need your parting shot Cindy. The shot at the peace movement, claiming that we put egos before human lives, was not necessary. And that you felt compelled to take it, I think, shows that you had a falling out with someone, or someones. By taking that shot, aimed at them, but hitting the entire peace movement, you did exactly what you accused them of doing. You put your ego before lives. I for one, don't think you had any right to exit this way.

CINDY

Dear Cindy,
All my friends in Portland will miss you. You've been a true heroine to us. Please don't stop writing and speaking truth to power.

Attention!

Well, I stand to attention and salute you. You have led by courageous example.

revolution interupted

Cindy,

You did what no one else could do. You stood up to a tyrant while giving the rest of us permission to do the same. Think of the progress that one person has created. You told President dumb-bell he was wrong when the rest of the country approved of his actions by an 80% margin. Now the number has completely reversed and everyone knows you were right all along.

I completely understand the reasons on why you're leaving, and wish you nothing but good fortune in the future. In fact, the only thing left for you to do is to accept the Nobel Peace Prize. When it comes, take it...you've really earned it.

Imagine a world without hypothetical situations.

Two-party Myth

I think that the real problem is not that we have a two-party system, but that we have a two-party mentality. There is nothing -- absolutely nothing -- in the federal Constitution that demands there only be 2 parties. Perhaps the road to peace lies in breaking that myth in the collective American mind?

Well Done, Cindy

Cindy, You have worked so hard and for so long to wake up a sleeping American public that doesn't seem to care. I too am appalled by the apathy of our fellow citizens. Millions spend days at shopping malls and hundreds spend a few hours at a peace march. I believe it's due to the media focus, and that is slowly beginning to change the worse things get. Sometimes it's a matter of body counts. If a dynamic leader were to emerge, I believe we could see massive change in this country. Meanwhile you have lit a fire in our consciousness that will burn for a long time. For now, your work is done. Rest, recharge yourself, enjoy your family. Know that you have given your all for your beloved son's memory, your country, and humanity. You will be in our hearts forever, and we will miss you dearly.

Hey, Cindy

I don't know what to say. I think all of the time about bumping into you in the throng behind the White House a year and a half ago, saying only "Hey, Cindy" and shaking your hand in my surprise. That encounter intensified the experience of that march for me, and it wasn't just "star power". You are not a star, although that is how you are percieved, judged, and dealt with in our woefully clueless press and by aparachiks of both parties; you are a principled warrior who has now been shoddily-treated by all sides. Please don't think that all you've done has been in vain. You've inspired millions, and we will continue to harrass our political "leadership", and the real whores in the media and blogosphere, until this war is ended and accountability for its crimes is realized. Thanks for everything you have done.

I FEEL YOUR SENTIMENTS, CINDY

I understand so much of what you are saying. Democrats.com has been kicking out posts that defend Dennis Kucinich, the one TRUE Democrat in a party long invaded by Republicans in Democratic clothing. And I have been dissed and slammed over there for criticizing the 'Democratic' candidates. They are behaving just like Republicans. I don't know how to wake the people up anymore, I really don't. I think, sadly, they will have to suffer more before they learn to see clearly.

I feel drained, and I can only imagine how you feel doing SO MUCH MORE than I have. Take time for yourself and your loved ones, Cindy. Our lives will be over all too soon, and the time we spend in solitude accounts for alot of growth.

You are hero and a role model, and NOTHING will ever change that.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your extremely hard work on this cause.

Cindy Sheehan

Dearest Cindy,
I'm so sad I almost don't know what to say. Your tremendous courage and love for your son and your country (and our world) are awe inspiring. That the movement and tne Democratic Party have been so cheap as to leave you feeling marginalized is a tragedy.

The Democratic Party proved last week that they have no courage or vision when they gave in to the Thug In Chief. I wrote the Dems in Congress that if they gave in they could forget about my money in the future. Their appeals will ring on deaf ears. Instead, I will work for and give only to those who stood up to Bush and those coming into politics who hold true values (real leftists).

In the meantime, thank you so much for all you have done, and in your own way, will continue to do. You inspired me when I saw you at Agape a while back and you still do. Like you said, it is up to us, all of us now to regain this country from the murderous facists who are in control.

God bless you and take good care of yourself Cindy. You deserve it. I love you.

Cindy, you deserve a rest, but you will be missed

It is indeed a question of right and wrong and not about the party.
It is not a good thing but it i
It is also true that all we have is a two party system, not because they have conspired, but because of mistakes made 230 years ago. As you know better than most fixing it is hard work and not magic, and even hard work can fail in the end.

It is easy to think amidst the horrors of the criminal Bush reign that any opposition understood what you understood and would act accordingly. They did not and do not, any more than those on the right.

All you can do is fight for what you do understand, and learn ever more deeply to understand more, that you might be still more effective at passing that understanding to others.

You did a tremendous job at passing that understanding to others and there are Millions more people who do understand what you do. That some do not(even in the Democratic party) is a lack on their part and not yours.

I do what I can inside the Democratic party because it is less a lost cause than trying to do so inside the Republican one.The time may come, possibly as soon as 2008, when there is no hope for a peaceful Democratic America, but I would be dearly sad to see that time. Your actions had a great deal to do with giving us one last hope to solve the Crisis, without it those times might be now.

Until then we are stuck with the system we have and not the system we wish we had. The forces of Fascism have been growing for 40 years or more, many have died and many more will die (on all sides) before it can be stopped.

The hope is not that we can keep the death toll to only the hundreds of thousands but that we can keep it from the Billions.

The American Army in Iraq is not the only one that is underfunded and over extended, the aware progressive Americans suffer the same issues. You have been foremost among all the troopers and now have your own PTSD issues to deal with, you deserve a rest, but there will be a giant hole in our lines where you have been, because we have no one able to fill it.

-------------------
If the Gang Of Predators think that the only good Democrat is a dead Democrat, only a fool would think it BiPartisan to accommodate them by acting the part.

Cindy, We will always love you

Cindy,

You did your very best and that is all anyone could expect from you or what you should expect from yourself.

I guess you learned better than anyone of us that America is void of leadership that holds honesty and personal integrity in high esteem.

True leaders like Martin Luther King, JFK and RFK were murdered because they were incorruptable. The men behind these cold blooded murders have not been brought to justice to this day.

We have leadership in the Democratic Party that is very much afraid for their lives. They know all too well that George W Bush could declare Marshall Law today and the public outcry would be muted. The Democratic Leadership has already been branded traitors for proposing to end the illegal Iraqi War. The difference between today and 40 years ago with the Viet Nam War is that George W Bush has the power and the means to instantly turn this country into a dictatorship. The Democratic Leadership would all be thrown in jail and ABC/CBS/NBC/FOX/WB/CSPAN/NPR/NY Times/Washington Post/WSJ et al would report that this is all perfectly normal. This is truly scary.

So keep your spirits high. Recharge those batteries. The day will come that George W Bush or his successor despot will declare Marshall Law and the American people will finally wake up and say, "NO, We don't want a dictatorship!"

We need you more than ever for when that day comes.

May Love and Peace Be Always With You

Cindy Sheehan

Dear mother of Casey.
I can only try to understand your pain but I share in your despair. You have been and inpiration to many. Sadly I have come to feel as you do about most of the people around me and about our leaders in particular. Promises that go down the drain, petitions signed that go nowhere, elections that speak for the majority but get manipulated by the minority, a constitution that speaks to and for some but not for all!! What is the sense??!! I threw in the towel last week when the Democrats bowed once again ..what is the sense??!! and what for??!!
Thank you for your work for Peace and for your attempts at minimizing our youg people's useless loss of limbs and lives.
Laa

The Democratic Party had better wake up....

Or their current supporters are going to reach the same breaking point that Cindy Sheehan has reached. With every new political maneuver they leave thousands looking in other directions. They still fail to comprehend that true leaders lead with their hearts, not minds. Cindy Sheehan inspired more people by her direct, passionate action than all the officials of the Democratic Party combined.

Some Democrats have commented that she shouldn't have appeared with Hugo Chavez, etc., that she should have focused only on the war in Iraq. Those people fail to comprehend what inspires mass movements. With their self-congratulating analysis and their political point counting they will allow the right wing in this country to maintain and increase control. Would they have told Martin Luther King to stick to "his issue," Civil Rights, when he began to speak out against the Vietnam War? Do they pretend that the issues Cindy confronted, which are separte in their compartmentalized brains, are actually separate in the real world?

I saw Nelson Mandela on Nightline not long after he was released from prison. Ted Koppel asked him if he wasn't worried that most Americans would be bothered by his positions on Israel. Mandela replied, "What kind of man do you think I am that I would change my views based on what someone else thinks?" Koppel was dumbfounded. He couldn't reply. In the realm of American politics, he'd never met anyone who put principle and integrity above popularity. Wake up, Democrats!

Cindy Sheehan is a person, like Nelson Mandela, who refused to change her opinions and actions based on the desires of others. If the Democrats don't realize that it's people like her who inspire real change, this election of 2006 will appear as one last small bump on their decline to irrelevance rather than the change of direction they claim it to be.

Cindy.

Cindy, I am one more who has lost faith with the Democratic party (the Peoples party). They have moved toward "the money" and no lie they try to spin will justify this abandonment of the people. And if there is an anti-war movement in this country it has gone to sleep. I am one who believes time is running out. Soon we will find the only way to stop this militarization of our country will be to oppose it in the street with our bodies and our lives.

Cindy Sheehan

Ugly, cheap shot headline..."Cindy Sheehan: Good Riddance Attention Whore." Cindy had it 100% right. The Democrats turned their backs on her, betrayed her when they realized she was serious, and not just another attention whore. My heart goes out to you, Cindy. I am a Viet Nam vet, and have been working against the war that murdered your child and thousands of others since before the first shot was fired, and I'm tired, too. The majority of Americans now want the U.S. out of Iraq, and our politicians have betrayed us. You threw yourself on the gears of the war machine and everyone just stood by and looked. Your grace and courage have empowered many, but sadly shown many more for cowards. I'm sorry you were left hanging.

Cindy

Nice one Cindy, you did your damnedest and you deserve some rest.

The Peace Movement

I am saddened that Ms. Sheehan has been worn down by the apathy of today's Peace Movement in this Country. I attended the Peace March in DC two years ago, and that experience nearly drove me to despair. It is disheartening to be marching for peace alongside people screaming for the violent overthrow of this or any other government in the world. I can understand why Ms. Sheehan, a truly spiritual person, has reached her limit, but I do hope that she will find comfort and strength in knowing that she has made a difference, not only here at home, but also in presenting a peaceful face to the world, which views most Americans as ignorant and violent.
Thank You, Cindy Sheehan, for having spoken what is in the hearts of many of us who believe that Peace is the only sane answer to warmongers of both Parties.

I completely, sadly understand why Cindy has given up.

But let's dare to mention the unmentionable here, folks.

Insofar as the warmongers have a stranglehold on BOTH of our two parties, I must observe that the single pro-war interest with the biggest lock on both parties is the "pro-Israel" lobby, with its supporters in the corporate media.

After all, Democratic politicians and activists are not afraid to criticize "big oil," or the "security" contractors, or the weapons makers. No one feels that any criticism of Bechtel must be avoided, or buried in profuse declarations of love and undying support for dear little Bechtel.

But just about everyone in both parties is afraid of pointing out the pressure that Israel's "friends" exert on our government to support Israel's belligerent, supremacist, expansionist agenda. Pro-Israel opinion makers have successfully redefined ant-Semitism to include sensible anger and disgust at the perversion of our political system that has been caused by our obsessive national attachment to Israel. We must end this evil infatuation, or the wars will go on and on and on until we are bankrupt and utterly ruined.

Next country to be destroyed for Israel: Iran. This disaster and mass murder will dwarf the Iraq fiasco, of course. And the same "pro-Israel" people are lying us into this. Wake up, people!

Cindy Sheehan and Our Government

In my view, Cindy Sheehan is a true heroine and my heart goes out to her. She has lost her son to an unworthy cause and has given much of herself physically and emotionally attempting to rectify the circumstances that led to the insoluble disaster in which we find our country. I understand how Cindy and so many others have lost faith in our system of government -- with reference specifically to our two-party system. I recall that in 2000 Ralph Nader persuaded enough voters in key states that there was no difference between the parties and people should make their vote count by voting for him. Without Nader on the ballot, New Hampshire and Florida would have gone to Gore who would then have won the election. I told people prior to the election that I saw Bush as possibly the most dangerous person who might ever hold the presidency. But the view that there was no difference between the parties resulted in the Bush presidency. I am a Democrat. I am a Democrat who will probably never be satisfied with the performance of the Democratic Party. I will never, however, allow myself to become so despondent as to not vote or to vote for some party that hasn't a ghost of a chance of winning an election. I will vote, if you please, for the lesser of two evils rather than see the greater evil prevail -- the greater evil did prevail in 2000 and it led to Cindy Sheehan's loss and the loss of tens of thousands more lives, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis according to Lancet, and has done grievous harm to America and the whole world from which we won't recover for many years. Human progress will have been set back many, many years. And why? Because we entertain unrealistic expectations of our fellow human beings functioning in an imperfect human governmental system. In dark times like these, it is hard to keep the faith but we must keep energized and do our best to make rational political choices.
