The Soft-Sell Side of John McCain's B.S.

THE FIFTH COLUMNIST by P.M. Carpenter

Sometimes there's just no better way to describe bullshit, such as the species of oratorical bowel movement that John McCain heaved last night, than by calling it what it is, and that would be, bullshit -- and in McCain's case, exceptionally stunning, vastly insulting bullshit, and, because of its setting, even historic bullshit.

South Carolina senator and McCain-sidekick Lindsey Graham, in a previewing memo to Republican colleagues yesterday, described the coming bullshit as a partisan call to arms: "Wake up! We're a party in retreat. We need to regroup, change the way we are doing business."

By that, Sen. Graham only meant, of course, crank up the bullshit. And as I listened to Sen. McCain last night, it kept occurring to me that the business model that mad-booster Graham most assuredly had in mind was none other than that of Sears past.

No, really, this is relevant. Bear with me.

Several years ago the retail giant fell into real financial trouble, chiefly because it had invested many preceding years into honing its off-putting reputation for an unfailingly rude indifference to customers. Sears had been the biggest, baddest-ass kid on the commercial block for so long, it had long since stopped caring about the folks it was supposed to be serving.

Unsurprisingly this behavior eventually began cutting into Sears' bottom line. So the firm launched an advertising/public relations campaign promoting what it called its "softer side." Yes, suddenly, it cared. It cared deeply. Oh, did it care.

But naturally, coincident to this campaign the company didn't bother to actually ratchet down any of its infamous indifference to customers. That would have required real and quite costly effort; an authentic, fundamental shift in the way Sears thought and did business.

The p.r. campaign alone, however, managed to fool just enough formerly abused but forgiving souls into giving Sears a second, third, or tenth chance.

Obvious object lesson: The company (mis)managed to hold on a while longer by changing absolutely nothing but its cheap bullshit.

More obvious object lesson: The masses buy cheap bullshit.

Now, it goes without saying that compared to the GOP, Sears was more piker than pioneer. But only in rube-seeking numbers. Its spirit -- its revamped business model -- was identical to what we're re-witnessing today. Or more properly, for those of us who had the stomach for it, what we witnessed last night.

"Let me offer an advance warning to the old, big-spending, do-nothing, me-first, country-second Washington crowd," brayed McCain to his old, big-spending, do-nothing, me-first, country-second partisan crowd. "Change is coming."

They know better, because they're stockholders. Still, they're hoping nearly as much as McCain that that old black marketing magic of poll-tested, focus-grouped, unmitigated bullshit can deceive just enough formerly abused but forgiving souls at least one more time.

It also goes without saying that there is no discernible difference between the John McCain of today and the John "90-percent-Bush" McCain of yesterday, so I won't waste space itemizing the endless non-differences. That his speech changed none of that is just as obvious as the obvious merits of cheap bullshit for the masses.

But in fact, the very tone and content of his "change"-drenched speech actually reinforced the reality of political business as usual. Which is to say, Wednesday night we got rhetorically rubber-hosed by the culturally radical Sarah Palin. And last night John McCain served us cupcakes.

And that's about as conventional as a presidential campaign can get -- the old top-of-the-ticket good cop, second-slot bad cop routine.

I expected more from a maverick.

Still, as consumers über alles, we love the rollout and promise of a new product. There's nothing quite like the anticipatory thrill of believing that this or that new gimmicky gadget will make all the difference in our unsatisfied lives, even if we suspect it's very much like the old one. We're simply eager to buy. More. It's what we do.

But I won't yet pronounce condemnation on our bullshit-consuming democracy. No, I'll be open-minded. I'll be hopeful. I'll reserve judgment -- until the sales figures come in early next week. Then I'll pronounce condemnation on our bullshit-consuming democracy.

Nevertheless, despite the almost inevitable convention bounce, I do remain hopeful for the longer and more important term. I just don't think the bullshit will work this time, not by November.

I have tried here on

I have tried here on Buzzflash to warn against the constant nasty, slimy attacks of Buzzflash, posters & this stupid P.M. Carpenters Chicago Political style of stupid slander. You've done it with Hillary, Palin & anything you could come up with. Hardly ever a conversation of issues. After what George Bush has done to this country, I find it amazing that the Republican convention was watched by more people than Obama's. Gov. Palin's speech was watched by more people than Obama's. Even old John McCains speech was watched by more than Obama's. You seem to think because you are on a Blog with people that agree with you, that's the way the whole country thinks. Well it's obvious with the Republicans convention, and Gov. Palin's speech & the polls out today that we are in trouble. With all the negative, sexist comments by the Media & Blogers, Palin is now more popular than Obama & McCain. Believe me folks she is a Star!! We are in trouble. Tying to throw rumors at her to see if it will stick, is not going to work. We need to stick to the issues in a positive classy way. I'm sure this is falling on deaf ears, but you're not going to convince me I'm wrong. And it's obvious 51% of the country thinks it's wrong too. Obama should be up 10% to 15% & after the record amount of money he's spent.
After this disaster of a administration, and he's behind??? Why???
I'm telling you what I think it is, but I'm sure I'll get flamed. But I hope at least a few of you think about it.

ZOGBY: MCCAIN-PALIN UP 4%...

What They Say & Do Doesn't Matter

What matters? That we elect a president who'll work with Congress and us to dismantle Empire-USA plus turning things around here at home. And then what sort of world? It'll be up to us.

Pappy McCain

Actually McCain's campaign lately has been reminding me of the scene in O Brother, Where Art Thou? where Pappy O'Daniel, his son and his staff are talking about why they are getting their butt kicked by Homer Stokes in the campaign because of his "midget and broom". Pappy's son suggests that they get themselves a midget like Homer's only even smaller. Pappy says "You slack shouldered sack of nuts. We'd just look like a bunch of Johnny-Come-Lately's, breaking out our own midget, it doesn't matter how stumpy. And that's the g-------d problem right there. People think this Stokes has fresh ideas. He's Au Courant and we're the past." Well, it's like McCain decided to take Junior O'Daniel's idiotic advice. Obama's killing him in part because he's a breath of fresh air, a whole new ballgame, an agent of actual change in Washington, so McCain went out and got a newer face, his own game changer and then went about trying to steal Obama's message of change too. It's really pitifully funny, because PM's right. She's nothing new, just the same old tired ultra-right wing policies marketed as shiny new "change". And once again, John McCain is using a woman to try to get ahead. Is it even possible for McCain to have an original idea anymore?

McCain's new alliance

Oh great....McCain sold his soul to get a chance to win this election, wooing the far right and selecting Palin their new hero. Here is a taste of the consequences of McCain's desperate acts. from www.talk2action.org "Theocrats to Pray for McCain's Death By Frederick Clarkson Wed Sep 03, 2008 at 11:48:03 AM EST print story The more theocratic elements of the Religious Right have a disturbing habit, (more like a practice) of invoking "imprecatory prayer" -- a call for God to literally pour his wrath down on those they consider to be his enemies. Last year, for example, Rev. Wiley Drake, then a Second Vice President of the Southern Baptist Convention made news when he called on his followers to pray for God to smite members of the staff of Americans United for Separation of Church and State. (Drake was angry that the organization had reported Drake to the IRS for endorsing Mike Huckabee on church stationary, among other apparent abuses of his church's 501(c))(3) tax-exemption.) The most recent target of theoractic imprecations is none other than Republican presidential candidate John McCain. They hope that an act of God will make Sarah Palin president."

Good analogy to Sears.

There is a lot of risk with McCain as there is for investors in Sears. Sears has transformed itself into a 'hedge fund' and retail sales as just a very minor part of their business. McCain admits to knowing little about the economy. Hedge funds are starting to drop like flies due to their high risk.

McCains promise of BS

When will Americans learn? There is NO change coming with McCain ,and Palin ,just more of the same we have had for 8 years ,only worse. What do the American People not understand about us "loosing America" We have lived on credit for 8 years now ,selling America to foreign countries just so this Administration can hold on to power .We are "BROKE" ,and some people still want more of the same ."Wake up America"

The GOP's Lack of Respect

The GOP lacks respect for the intelligence of the average American voter. Unfortunately, they have good reason to. History has shown they have been able to say one thing and then do something else, and get away with it. They can mislead, and outright LIE to the American people, and suffer little if any consequences. In my opinion, anyone who makes less the $250K/year, and votes Republican, is a FOOL, because the GOP does not represent the best interests of the middle class. However, it's those fools the Republicans rely on to get them elected. I believe this is because there are a lot of lazy middle class in this country, who don't take the time to look for the truth. It could also be due to the fact that we are all struggling so hard, just to make ends meet, that many of us don't have the time to do the necessary research. This is why the GOP bullshit has worked in the past. Will it work this year? For the sake of this country, I hope not.

McCain Spokespersons

Has anyone else noticed that the big majority of spokespersons for McCain are women with big fake smiles?

Concerning "attitudinal reform"

Considering the remarks of Palin et al, I would be extremely surprised to see them change their attitudes, let alone anything else.

"Attitudinal Reform"

I was just listening to Alex Witt on MSNBC. She was talking to two people, Jonathan Weisman and Bill ?? One of them said one of McCain's aides said the reform they are talking about is "attidunal reform!" Yup! Yup! LOL

DID SOMEONE SAY........................................

Referring to Senator Barack Obama, the Democratic nominee, Mr. Trippi added, “All Obama has to do is say, ‘Bush-McCain, Bush-McCain.’ ” BUSH MCCAIN BUSH MCCAIN BUSH MCCAIN BUSH MCCAIN BUSH MCCAIN

How Can A Consumer Consume...

... when the wallet is completely tapped out? McCain and the greedheads who are the Republican Party have taken almost everything - our houses, our cars, our credit, our medical care, and our retirements - and squandered it in an insane effort to conquer the world. As right as you are about the quality of McCain's oral manure, it isn't going to help grow us out out of the hole in which the GOP has put this nation. Even if the GOP loses the election (due to the numbers being too big for Diebold to fudge), the nation is still too firmly gripped by the oil war tar baby to climb out of the Republican muck now made deeper by McCain's clarion call for More of the McSame.

Not even a war hero

Not only that, the main gimmick McCain is running on is his being a war hero. According to reputable sources, he was a coward and a traitor.
