So It Wasn't All About Hillary?

THE FIFTH COLUMNIST by P.M. Carpenter

For weeks, if not months, the major press has had this lede set in print, like a sure and vulturous obituary: "Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton will endorse Senator Barack Obama on [insert day of the week here], bringing a close to her 17-month campaign for the White House."

Seventeen months – the last five of which were little more than a political death watch, full of recriminations and outward blame emanating from the Clinton camp.

Who was responsible for Hillary's fall? It seems everyone was -- everyone, that is, except Hillary, which was quite a trick, since it was Hillary in charge of her fate.

At least down to the final hours, she was. For the formal end came at the hands of her closest friends: congressional allies who had been waiting for sanity to reign, but eventually realized that that time, left unassisted, might never come.

Clinton-supporter Charlie Rangel of the House perhaps reflected their game-ending frustration the best: "We pledged to support her to the end. Our problem is not being able to determine when the hell the end is."

Truth be told, Charlie, which I imagine you already knew, is that the end was in January. Any presidential campaign that marches into the Iowa caucus projecting Hillary’s titanic sense of inevitability, only to then come in third, is a presidential campaign of the past.

There is, simply, no political recovery from a plunge from that height of expectations.

And so it has been for five grueling, unnecessary months. Throughout which, I feel compelled to add, we have been assured by the Clinton camp – lectured, actually – that her struggling campaign was about everything but Hillary.

Those who charged otherwise – that it was only about Hillary, that is – were but cynical detractors. How could they say such things? Why could they not concede the depths of humanity inherent in Hillary’s selfless campaign?

But now that it’s all over we learn, as though we needed to learn this, that Hillary’s final weeks and months weren’t quite so selfless. The reasons for her seemingly strange tenacity are leaking out, the best of which I’ll leave for last.

First, reports The Politico, "she could use Obama’s help raising money to retire her debts, something she signaled with an aggressive online appeal for cash" in her most ungracious, non-concession speech Tuesday night.

Second, "her supporters assume she has earned the prime speaking slot at the Democratic National Convention that Obama can bestow." Now there’s a selfless goal for you. But it’s also one that preshadows the third and most cynicism-inducing reason for Hillary having stayed in the race:

"She especially needs help restoring support from an African-American community that had been her base – assistance that can only come from Obama’s fulsome embrace."

Now why, you might ask yourself, would Hillary, at the close of a primary season in which she is the loser, need "help restoring support" from the African-American community? Why would she have leveraged stubbornness in return for that help? She is, after all, not the party’s nominee.

Except she is, in her mind. Not this year, of course, but in 2012. She is already running, already reformulating a coalition, already counting on an Obama loss in the general election.

Brace yourself. For Hillary has in store, I would wager, a lot of little verbal "slips" on the way – slips guaranteed to keep the Obama campaign in turmoil over the coming months.

For Hillary, the ultimate point of her heretofore pointless campaign is just beginning. And that, Mr. Rangel, is where the hell the end now lies -- because the Clintons never quit.

Let's begin to focus on the more important things

If we were in a war, and nobody wrote about it --- would it automatically go away? Would almost seem that the Iraq war has disappeared. Nobody's writing about it anymore. Domestic politics have been front and center. The MSM obviously cannot walk, and chew gum at the same time. The Senate Intelligence commitee has issued a damning report on the intelligence that was used to get us into Iraq. The report is pretty much buried in a lot of papers. Foreign media reports that according to information from Patrick Cockburn, writing in the Independent,U.K.,-- plans are for, a signed agreement that will allow 50 permanent American bases in Iraq. At the same time a very few domestic news outlets (Thanks Buzzflash) were reporting this, Ambassador Crocker was speaking to the State Department Press Corps. Doing his very best Scott McClellan imitatation, he denied the Cockburn report. Obama and Clinton have met privately. She has urged her supporters to put differences aside, and support the Democratic ticket. Whether she's on it, or not. The primary campaign was exciting. It was newsworthy. No doubt about it. But, it pushed out a lot of other important things, out of our minds, and off the front pages, and it should not have. Sorry to get so far off topic. But, we need to end our bickering, and unite, not only as a party, for the November election. We need to end our bickering and unite as a country, to bring an end to the suffering, the dying, and the obscenity that is the Iraq war.

Nah

five grueling, unnecessary months

They filled an avoided void, and most of what has been talked about would not have been if this had not happened.

America will be better off for the necessary grueling in the long run ......... assuming of course that we don't close off all possible good futures by electing McCain.

The face of the Democratic Party no longer is the Clintons

I guess it hasn't sunk in yet even with P.M. Carpenter that we have reached the end of a 16-year (Democratic = Clinton) era. It really doesn't matter much what Hillary does. It's over.

Welcome Back, PM! :)

Weren't you supposed to be on vacation until NEXT week, though? I can't believe you cut your vacation short to swim so soon in the Sea of Pro-Hillary Trolls Who Just Can't Seem to Get a Life....

Great column, as always - and who would have ever thought Amy Poehler, in mocking Clinton's "determination" last month, would actually have had the right of it...?

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Once we start the campaign for the future of our country, those who choose instead to fight for the corporations and the war machine will be easy to spot. And once we get behind our party's leader and start making some real noise, they will be drowned out in the din. There's too much at stake to worry about one person's ego and personal ambition. It's Hillary's choice, and it's not worth fretting over anymore.

I think too many people would rather play "roadblock", Cagey

Including, obviously, the Clintons....

Still - time to move ahead to November, eh?

Obama has Republican supporters who actually intend

to vote for him in the fall... my parents are two examples of that, or I might not believe it. Once Huckabee was out on the Republican side, Republicans started coming out to vote for Hillary (against Obama) just to mess up the Democratic party primary... to make it last forever. Yesterday, I happened upon the Limbaugh show (ugh!) when I was listening to the radio in the car, and he was asking his listeners to write to Hillary on her website, and ask her to stay in and take the fight to Denver.

Yup, that's Rush's "Operation Chaos". And it has worked. These Republicans voting for Hillary admit in exit polling that they don't intend to vote for her in the fall. They won Hillary Texas and Indiana... maybe more states, we'd have to look at that. Our party has to make sure this doesn't happen in the future, somehow. It just gave Hillary an excuse to run an endless campaign, and to damage Obama. Didn't everyone notice how she began to sound like a Republican on the campaign trail? Flattering McCain, and sending Bill on the Limbaugh show? Going on O'Reilly herself?

...Back to Limbaugh-- I was back in the car a couple of hours later (he was still there!) and he was telling his listeners that it might be better to let Obama win-- Rush is assuming that Obama will screw things up so that a REAL Republican (not McCain) can get elected in 4 years. So if Republicans DO go out and vote for Obama this time, Rush will claim credit and continue to say that Operation Chaos is a success.

As I mentioned in another

As I mentioned in another thread, my 88 year old Reagan Republican mother is voting for Obama because she thinks "change is a good thing" (and even FOX News can't put a spit shine on the mess).

I also have two rabid Repug colleagues who will vote for Obama only if Hillary is on the ticket.

They seem to think that such a thing will bring true conservatives to the fore.

It's almost mythic: the anti-hero will bring forth the hero. The anti-christ will cause the Second Coming.

Nuts. The world's gone nuts.

Operation Chaos achieved

Operation Chaos achieved nothing. Absolutely nothing. Events would have unfolded almost exactly as they did if Rush Limbaugh had never said a thing. Certainly Hillary Clinton didn't need Rush Limbaugh to invent excuses for her.

Who needs her

Glad to see you back P.M. During the time you were gone, Hillary racked up win after win in state after state. Without your daily drumming of her and your right-on snide remarks, people were voting for her again. I am glad that you are back to remind us that the 50% of the vote Clinton got was no where near as much as the 50% of the votes our savior Mr Barrack got. I hope you will get back to doing what you do best -- getting rid of all the Clinton supporters in the Democratic Party so that Mr Barrack's landslide win in November will be as pure as he is.

Remember, the Republicans that voted for Obama are smart Republicans who will abandon their Party's candidate in November -- unlike the dumb Republican's that voted for Hillary just to make Obama look bad. And the Democrats in the blue states will have to vote for Mr Barrack because their state is painted blue on all the maps. Heck, Obama could have won those states too if Clinton had not been on the ballot.

And, it is important to start blaming Hillary every day in case Mr Barrack happens to lose in November. If Hillary is the VP pick, then her presence on the ticket will be the reason the Democrats lose. If she is not on the ticket then she will make sure that the ticket loses. Remeber, lose or lose, everything that happens is Clinton's fault -- whether it is bad or worse.

Bitterness...

... is an ugly thing. She lost. Get over it. In fact, in states that she won, such as California, Barack was polling more than 10 points over Hillary just a few weeks ago. Looks like buyer's remorse to me. Californians had enough time to see the real Hillary. If you feel REALLY badly, go to Hillary's website and donate. She's looking for fools to help her get her 11.5 million loan to her own campaign back.

Please, make her go away.

Hillary has been working tirelessly to sabotage Obama's chances in the general election for quite some time. I would hope that she will make a nice endorsement speech on Saturday and then retreat to her cozy DLC corner of the party to lick her wounds and stay out of the media's sight. I also hope that Obama will choose someone else for VP and do it soon, so that the speculation about her in that slot will end. The Clintons are providing a nasty example of how egomaniacal, self-serving politicians become bitter and behave badly when they don't get their way. We all need to stop thinking about THEM and start focusing on McCain and the Republican slime machine that is about to move into action.

Obama can't afford to let

Obama can't afford to let Hillary Clinton control his schedule. Maybe he can pay off her campaign debt if she'll just go away; that would be money well spent. But that wouldn't affect Obama's schedule.

sabotage?

She's been handing BO his lunch in the last couple of months. He's damn lucky to be where he is considering the thumping he took in all the big democratic states. Bill from ct

Obama thanks Clinton for the

Obama thanks Clinton for the free lunches.

Handing BO his lunch?

Mainly, Hillary has shown that she is more popular with Appalachian red-necked racists. Is that a surprise to you? In case you haven't noticed, NATIONAL opinion polls of Democrats of all stripes show Obama widening his lead over Clinton to double digits. He now even outpolls her in California.

Hillary had every advantage...

... in this primary season, and she still got her butt kicked. The contacts, the name recognition of Jesus, the money, the front runner status, and Barack still kicked her butt. What Obama accomplished was nothing short of amazing. No wonder Hillary has had such a hard time letting go. Bitterness is an ugly thing.

Yea right

Yea, all those republican votes for Hillary in order to hurt the Dems helped eh?

You DO know ...

... Obama got more Republican crossover vote than Clinton, right? The appeal to Repugs and independants is part of the appeal, remember?

Think a little

The Obama "crossover" votes you mention will be cast again in November, for Obama. There ARE repugs who have, and will, vote for Obama. The Clinton crossover votes, on the other hand, were meant to play havoc on the Dems and to keep the division going as long as possible. Rush Lardbaugh was urging all repugs to vote for Hillary in the Dem primary, and exit polls proved that they did, and for that reason. Geez. You sure you're not a repug? You think like one, which isn't very deep. Know what I mean? Get with it.

They WILL be cast again for Obama?

Wow - such simple certainty (emphasis on "simple"). And the Clinton crossover votes were bogus. Really? How many were responding to Limbaugh's appeal? Any figures? No? .... that's what I thought.

You are aware that Limbaugh later changed his mind and urged his listeners to vote for Obama, right? As Limbaugh phrased it, he "released superdelegates to Obama." "After months of promoting “Operation Chaos,” in which the conservative talk show host pushed listeners to vote for Clinton to aid McCain, he pulls back on Wednesday and tells them to go for Obama." http://thepage.time.com/2008/05/07/limbaugh-releases-the-superdelegates-to-obama/

Adds: “He will lose. He will lose big and you supers know it….but go ahead. Go ahead and get in the tank for him.”

BTW - "Think a little". This - from someone who says "Bye, Bye Bitch ..... period", and claims he wants Obama to win in November. They should put you in charge of the Obama unification efforts .....

.... if they're trying to lose.

You are correct.

I think that this analysis is basically correct, although there is still some question as to how much impact malicious crossover voting actually had on the outcome of some of the races. I think it probably was substantial in Ohio, Texas and Indiana. I also think that there will be legions of Republicans casting their votes for Obama in November, but relatively few Democrats doing the same for McCain. All but the most bitter Hillary die-hards will be unable to pull the lever for a man who is anti-choice and would likely appoint several new Supreme Court justices who will undo Roe v. Wade as well as many other legal cornerstones of a liberal society.

Bingo robgo2!

You are right robgo2. Yman will vote for McCain, you can bet on that. Right Yman? All because you're mad the crazy woman, who couldn't quit but instead gave tons of ammunition to the repugs to use in campaign commercials, lost months ago. Here's one quote for you from one of the links below: REPUBLICANS VOTING FOR HILLARY TO SABOTAGE OBAMA CAMPAIGN telegraph.co.uk — Republicans turned out in record numbers to back Hillary Clinton. Exit polls in Texas and Ohio show that 9% of voters in both were self-declared Republicans. Last week Clinton's share of that vote more than doubled after people like Rush Limbaugh told republican voters to skew the Democrats primaries to help John McCain win come November... Here's some links about the crossover voting: http://wwwwakeupamericans-spree.blogspot.com/2008/02/limbaugh-wants-republicans-to-vote-for.html http://digg.com/2008_us_elections/Republicans_Voting_For_Hillary_To_Sabotage_Obama_Campaign By the way Yman, Lardbaugh was a little late with the "switch" to Obama. Got any ideas why he switched? Think. This contest was over months ago, but Hillary hung in to damage Obama so he will lose and she can run in 2012. I can hear her now. "See, I told you he couldn't win". Now elect me this time (2012) and I'll beat McCain. Think.

"Think"?

From someone who's idea of a profound thought is "Bye, Bye, Bitch ..... Period"?

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha .....

And Operation haos was successful because the Telegraph and a couple of Obama blogs say so? (BTW - One of the links merely links back to the Telegraph article, and in BIG LETTERS has a header that says " ! Warning: The Content in this Article May be Inaccurate"). That's even funnier! How about some actual data and analysis from an objective news source. No? .......... That's what I thought.

Here's some actual data from the primaries. While there is no data for the closed primary states (except for PA), here's the crossover vote data for the open primary states:

Iowa - Obama (44-10)
Super Tuesday open states - Obama (53-36)
Virginia - Obama (72-23)(73-24 among self-identified "conservatives")
Wisconsin - Obama (72-28) (59-40 among self-identified "conservatives")
Misissippi - Clinton (76-24)
Missouri - Obama (75-21)
Texas - Obama (53-46)
Ohio - tied (49-49)
http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/

Now in PA (a closed primary), newly registered Dems who were registered as Republicans in January were split 50-50 between Clinton and Obama, while the split of Dems who were already registered as Dems in Jan. was 57-43 - Clinton. http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/primaries/results/epolls/#PADEM
So Obama got 50% of the newly registered Dems, while losing the long term Dems by 14 points.

Obama DID lose support from Republican crossover votes as the campaign proceeded, but that couldn't have anything to do with things that might alienate Repub voters (think Rev. Wright, the "cling" controversy). Nahhhhhhhhh .... that makes no sense.

So let's see, the Republican crossover voters go for Clinton in ONE state (Misissippi), they split equally in Ohio and PA, and OBAMA WINS THE REPUBLICAN CROSSOVER VOTE IN ALL OF THE OTHER STATES.

Like you said, "You sure you're not a repug? You think like one, which isn't very deep. Know what I mean?"

YMan a troll?

I think YMan is a "Fixed" News junky. What you don't get, STILL, is that the crossover vote for Obama is because he is bringing in republicans to his fold. The crossover vote for Hillary.... well, hey, if you can't figure out why republicans voted for Hillary, I can't help you. Again, you're not thinking right. Look at your own numbers, all those numbers for Hillary are from people who will vote for McSame in November. Get it????? Know what I mean?

No one ....

... knows what you mean. It's nice to believe you have the ability to read the minds of the Repub crossover voters, but I'll take hard data over your mind-reading claims.

What's kinda funny is all of those who say Obama shouldn't pick Hillary for VP becuase the Repugs hate her and they'll mobilize like crazy in Nov. - and yet, none of Obama's Repug crossovers were voting against Hillary in the primary. They all just suddenly saw the light and decided to vote for the "true" progressive.

Now THAT'S funny!

Look at your own numbers

Look at your own numbers man. Do you really think a registered republican would truly vote for Hillary Clinton? Of course not. They hate her because the right had been demonizing her for years on end. Why can't you see that the crossover votes for Obama are just what you've been hearing about in the exit polls, that a lot of moderate republicans don't like McSame, and do see something in Obama? Those are truer votes. I'm done with you man. Go ahead, respond with more gibberish. Later....

Still no data ...

But if you insist on sheer speculation with no data, okay. Judging by many of the posters here on BF, Obama is the more "progressive" candidate, right? In fact, the only "true" progressive. Hillary, on the other hand, is a DLC, sentrist, Bush-Cheney Lite, right? She's WAAAAY more conservative than Obama. In fact, she's been called a Repug many times here on BF. Finally, McSame is disliked by a whole lot of Repugs. So, assuming Obama is the more liberal/progressive, and Hillary is just a Repug-lite, which one would get more Repug votes in November?

Hey ..... that speculating thing is really easy. I see why you like it.

Like you said ...... "Later."

Yman, you really ARE a Pro-Hillary/Lieberman Troll

w/made-up "facts", aren't you? I'm amazed Faux Noize hasn't already scooped you up to do color ("Heh, heh! Heh, heh! He said 'color' about Obama! Heh, heh! Heh, heh!") commentary....

You.
Need.
To.
Get.
A.
Life.

Selah.

You wouldn't know a fact ...

... from your own .............. nose. Which is pretty funny, considering you're a "Doc" (mixology?). The stats aren't made up. They're right there in the url.

BTW -

You.
Voted.
For.
Hillary.
Clinton.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!!!!

NBA Finals, Pimlico, endless baseball games, etc..

The ultimate time to dump bad news is this weekend. That the nominee had to be told, of Senator Clinton's weekend plans, by the news media, speaks volumes to who she is as a human being. My momma always told me: "Money and Class are two separate and distinct things." She was right. Some people with lots of money.....$100 million plus in this case.... have absolutely NO class. V.P.? - I don't think so.

The word has gone out, now,

The word has gone out, now, she's not looking to be the running mate. She had no chance anyway.

Hillary Hillary Hillary

What are you half wits going to talk about in your post Hillary world. This Carpenter guy should stay gone. Bill from ct

We'll talk about a real candidate

We'll talk about a candidate that doesn't hurt the party. Obama.

Exactly!

We'll be talking about a return to progressive politics. About change driven by the people, which is what Obama's campaign is all about. We'll be talking about how the corporate arm of the Democratic party is losing power - thanks to the internet.

Gee - No WONDER Yman, ThomasM, Neva, Wrando and Alibe

are shrieking w/rage!

"Progressive" politics? In the Democratic Party? What anathema! Wash your mouth out w/soap right this instant!

Hum...

I am afraid you just might be right, for I bet she still believes that the presidency was her to be had. I am sure Bill had promised it to her. Dont you think?

What good is a promise from

What good is a promise from a former alpha dog?
