John McCain and the NYT's Kid Gloves

THE FIFTH COLUMNIST by P.M. Carpenter

This morning we have a tie in the stumbling-around, lost-bearings contest: John McCain and the New York Times.

Yesterday, straight-talkin' McCain again accused Barack Obama of being in the ideological pocket of the terrorist organization Hamas, an accusation based solely on an unsolicited comment made by one of Hamas' advisers in a radio interview last month: "We like Mr. Obama and we hope that he will win the election."

Being ill content with the marketing of merely one logical fallacy, McCain "went on to accuse Mr. Obama of agreeing to negotiate with the president of Iran, who on Wednesday referred to Israel as 'a stinking corpse facing annihilation.' He described that as 'a distinct difference between myself and Senator Obama.'"

All rather standard political hyperbole and distortion, in response to which Obama simply noted that McCain must be "losing his bearings." Not really, for this was nothing out of the ordinary for a Republican presidential candidate -- which is to say, it was pure rubbish. Right?

Well, yes, of course. With the possible exception of Teddy Roosevelt in 1904, what Republican candidate since Abraham Lincoln in 1864 has offered much of anything but pure rubbish?

So that's the familiar, well-worn substance of McCain's remarks. No real news there.

What caught my eye, however -- in fact, what made both of them bulge -- was the New York Times' coverage of McCain's gibberish. Check this out:

But important nuances appear to have been lost in the partisan salvos, particularly on Mr. McCain’s side. An examination of Mr. Obama’s numerous public statements on the subjects indicates that he has consistently condemned Hamas as a "terrorist organization," has not sought the group’s support and does not advocate immediate, direct or unconditional negotiations with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian president.

Important nuances?

Did that passage not specifically refute, point by blunt point, what McCain had so irresponsibly tossed around?

Obama has -- and the Times took the time to look this up, just so there was no mistake -- "consistently condemned Hamas," never "sought the group's support" and never championed any notion of "immediate ... or unconditional negotiations" with Iran's president.

Those are nuanced differences from what McCain had charged?

If I'm ever arrested on, say, a bogus bank robbery charge, I should hope the Times would not rush to my defense by noting that I was out of the country at the time of said offense and further noting that my towering, documented alibi in court is a "nuanced" one.

One wonders how strongly Obama must word a position before the press concedes that some contradictory charges are, to put it politely, but fabrications of his opponent's political mind. For instance the very day before McCain repeated his latest humbug about Obama and Hamas, the Illinois senator appeared on CNN and "again called Hamas a terrorist group and said that 'we should not talk to them unless they recognize Israel, renounce violence and are willing to abide by previous accords' that Israel has negotiated with its neighbors and with the Palestinian Liberation Organization."

That quote within a quote came from the Times as well. If there is "nuance" in it, anywhere, it escapes me. Completely.

Furthermore the Times noted this "is not a new position for Mr. Obama. In 2006, he, like Mr. McCain, was a co-sponsor of the Palestinian Anti-Terrorism Act, which called on 'members of the international community to avoid contact with and refrain from financially supporting the terrorist organization Hamas' until it met all of the same requirements that Mr. Obama enumerated again on Thursday."

Hence the Times was, in fact, reporting in a roundabout way that McCain is, in fact, as full of it as a Christmas goose. There was, as we learn farther down in the article, nothing "nuanced" about McCain's remarks after all. Yet we're treated to that "objective" coloration right off the bat.

And so we begin a fresh campaign season of "journalistic balance" -- one in which political lies are gingerly addressed with such overweening fairness that the coverage itself slides into a morass of fabrication.

It is in the financial and

It is in the financial and political interest of corporate media owners to have neck and neck political campaigns running down to the wire. This requires treating truth and falsehood as essentially equal but with a greater emphasis on treating lies as truth. This imbalance is essential to keep Republicans in the running, especially since they are favored by corporate media interests. Inversely, no truth told by a Democrat is to profound to be slighted, nor is any lie to insignificant to be profound. This is called nuance.

The press won't come down on the Hero!

Nothing will change until we stop talking about McCain "the hero." He's not. Heroism is the conscious act of putting your own well-being or life second to someone else's. All McCain did was succeed in getting shot down, get put in a POW camp, and supposedly tortured (it was actually long periods of discomfort.) None of which is heroic. And all of which was done my many, many others who are not only not called heroes, but are anonymous. My friend is British , and his father served in the South Pacific during WW2. He was captured by the Japanese and tortured to a degree that makes what McCain went through seem like a picnic. His father, and his fellow vets, do not call themselves "heroes." They call themselves "victims" or "survivors." And none would ever use those awful experiences for political gain. Democrats are also at fault' Obama praising his service and calling him a "true American Hero." This has got to stop. Americans are so stupid they'll buy it. We must stop it and certainly not add to it. And Th press must be made to stop gushing all over McCain and his ancestors. It's irrelevant to an election. We must lean heavily on the media to treat him as a senator running for president.

McCain the Murderer

My grandfather was also in a Japanese POW camp and I don't remember him ever calling himself a hero, or anyone else for that matter. It was never talked about. McCain is just a baby melter. He was part of a 100% illegal and immoral invasion of a foreign country and he was directly responsible for the murder of men, women, and children. His innocent victims burned alive while he zoomed over in the comfy cockpit of his bomber. McCain, a hero? I don't fucking think so. He is a monster, and he should be down on his knees thanking the Vietnamese for not executing immediately. If he had done to my Irish people what he did to the Vietnamese we would be wearing his skin as a belt right now. He got off easy.

The Corporate Controlled Media Don't Matter No More

"What matters?" "That we elect a president who'll end the Iraq War, negotiate with Iran plus turning things around here at home." "And then what sort of world?" "It'll be up to us."

Who is controlling whom?

Once again we are reminded that barack HUSSEIN obama is under the control of the big bad ISLAMOFASCISTS it's all a very "manchurian candidatey" plot.... ...Except that the creators & perpetrators of that myth never took the time to read the book or watch the original 1962 movie entitled "The Manchurian Candidate", as near a biography of John McCain as is to be found anywhere if one thinks "Vietnam" when they hear "Korea" when watching the movie. I say this in jest, to highlight the absurdity of the political rumor-mongers hard at work on the right, at least i hope so, but my "just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you" sensor has been going off. First, all the people that were trying to destroy him in the 2000 election become his best friends & supporters, then the positions he's taken on a host of important issues become their opposite as instantly & completely as can be, as if a mechanism had been moved from it's "off" to "on" position. Finally, I saw that creepy mothers day ad they cooked up for him, I don't know if you can follow my ravings this far, but when his mother goes on about him as "the kindest, gentlest, best child..." or some such thing I heard "Raymond Shay is the bravest kindest most wonderful human being I've ever known in my life." The phrase those brainwashed with the Manchurian Candidate were programmed to think whenever asked about him. So yeah, let us go there this election season. We could use a "national discussion" on the way torture effects the mind, the results of all those old CIA experiments in 'special interrogation techniques" and how they erase personalities in the attempt to rebuild people from scratch (see chapter 1 of "The Shock Doctrine" by Naomi Klein). It would be helpful not only for measuring up the Senator from Arizona but is necessary in light of the policies & practices employed in carrying out the "war on terror". His experience living through torture defines Mr. McCain as much as race defines Mr. Obama.

The "Old Gray Lady"

The New York Times has already become irrelevant after years of false reporting and "nuanced" news. She belongs on the porch in a rocker with Grandpa McNuts where they can whittle and swap lies for the rest of their days. NOBODY CARES, NYT! Can we move on to the 21st century please?

"We like Mr. Obama and we hope that he will win the election."

There simply could not be a clearer statement that McCain is the choice of terrorists worldwide. What could be better for them than the man who promises to follow the policies of the royal A-hole who has done them so well over the past seven years? Let's review, shall we? Bogged down in the heart of the Middle-East just as OBL desired, our troops dying every day as target practice for Islamic-radicals-in-training, terrorist recruitment at record highs, hundreds of billions of our money flushed down the shitter for a lie, bleeding our nation to death. If you weren't clued in to the absolute kleptocratic venality of the Bush crime family, you'd almost think Dumya was a sleeper agent for al Qaeda. Of course they're going to pull for Obama. They want us to give them McCain. Rethuglicans have shown how un-American they truly are, sacrificing our country for the benefit of the tiny elite at the pinnacle of wealth and privilege, grinding up our children in Iraq and Afghanistan, laughing as they pretend to search the Oval Office for WMD. How many corporate CEO's have their children on the ground in Ramadi? Let's get over it, UNIFY, and TAKE THESE SCUMBAGS DOWN! WAR CRIMES TRIALS FOR THE WHOLE STINKING BUNCH!! http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/10/world/middleeast/10blackwater.html?hp AND THIS LITTLE GEM: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2004404786_cremains10.html Yeah, support the troops. Next, Halliburton will be feeding "Soylent Green" to the troops.

Your Corporate Controlled Conservative Press (CCCP) in action...

You betcha! Your CCCP (now what does that remind me of????) slobbers all over Mr. Brainfart Mc Cain because he has promised them even MORE deregulation to control even more of the media than they already have. And what other treats is Mr Brainfart passing out? Well how about making those Bush tax cuts permanent? Yesirree, no wonder why Mr. Meet the PRESSTITUTE Ten Million Dollars a year in salary Timmy loves him so. Yep, with yet another tax cut, Timmy will be able to buy another mansion in Palm Beach.

Finally - we pivot to McCain!

Thanks for a column NOT about Mrs. Clinton. It's time for us to go after the REAL other - McCain. I have to say, "losing his bearings" DID sound to me like it was directed at McCain's age - and BULLY FOR OBAMA. McCain's age is a legitimate issue and Obama is right to allude to it. He's also right to feign surprise when he's called on it - it's why he chose an ambiguous phrase and not "senior moment" as Brit Hume recently posited. It makes McCain look really touchy about it and reminds people he has reason to be.

Don't thank Ms. Clinton yet:

Don't thank Ms. Clinton yet: Though I, too, wish she would go away as a topic, Ms. Clinton probably isn't done with us yet.

"Yesterday, straight-talkin'

"Yesterday, straight-talkin' McCain again accused Barack Obama of being in the ideological pocket of the terrorist organization Hamas"

Yahoo! Let the games begin! Here we go folks, another IQ test for the American electorate!

How should Obama respond to this tomfoolery?

a. laugh uncontrollably
b. Roll his eyes, shake his head and say, "Is he really that stupid?"
c. Smile and say, "Hey! My middle name is Hussein and my father was muslim!"
d. Chuckle and say, "Senator, I'll leave it to Jon Stewart to handle that one."

PS: Unbounded relief... not a Hillary or a Clinton in the whole damn column.

That's funny, I thought

That's funny, I thought Obama's father was a confirmed atheist, and that his stepdad was, at least, not significantly religious.

The propaganda about his dad

The propaganda about his dad is that he was, of course, a Muslim extremist. The truth is he was either an atheist or an agnostic, ie, no longer a practicing Muslim. His mother had a rather progressive view of religion: "I was not raised in a religious household... My mother's own experiences... only reinforced this inherited skepticism. Her memories of the Christians who populated her youth were not fond ones... And yet for all her professed secularism, my mother was in many ways the most spiritually awakened person that I've ever known."

However, as I was being sarcastic in my above post, it really doesn't matter.

Personally, even though out of political necessity he touts his mom as a "Christian" (which she was), I find it hopeful that he was raised in a household skeptical of organized religion, and exposed her children to many different ideologies.

McCain's press pass

Grampa John [Sen John McCain R(ALZ)] will continue to be given a pass by the press because senile RepubliCons are the only elderly Americans that the US press has any respect for.

What will they say when he

What will they say when he shows up for a debate with an onion tied to his belt?

it would have to be a yellow onion

because of the war...
