The Media's Lingering Denial, As Desperate as Hillary's

THE FIFTH COLUMNIST by P.M. Carpenter

In describing -- or dismissing -- Hillary Clinton’s "endgame" as "a fond wish wrapped in a desperate hope," The Politico's Roger Simon granted her a narrow opening and closed it at the same time.

His piece following Hillary's North Carolina and Indiana losses -- admit it, buckaroos, Indiana was a loss -- "Clinton desperate for super turnaround," was written in the present tense; so when he ventured that "she needs momentum, spin and fear" to transform the quixotic to realistic, I can only assume he foresaw that trio's remaining possibilities.

On the other hand, as he indulged all this foresight, he was drawing the curtain and mumbling last rites.

It was the damnedest thing. And, with all due respect to Mr. Simon, whose veteran opinion I do indeed respect, it was damned typical of the way the media at large have failed, since February, to finally euthanize the mortally wounded Clinton campaign.

Part of that failure, no doubt, springs from John McCain's Lazaruslike return to the field after the media had stacked the last stone on his political grave. It was rather shabby of Mr. McCain to come bounding back, what with all the embarrassment it caused the print and network prophets of our time. One senses that after that startling turn of a worm, they said, No more, never again, from here on out we'll always insert a qualifier into each of our political prognostications -- no matter how much of an extraordinary outlier that qualifier may be.

Another part of the media's failure to declare the Clinton campaign's time of death has been, I think, a borderline-unconscious conspiracy to keep her public hopes on life support. Not all conspiracies come packaged in evil intent, you know -- and let's face it, notwithstanding the considerable angst that Clinton has caused her party internally, her neverending quest for ultimate power in 2009 has been just plain fun for all to watch.

Please, please don't let it end. 'Cause then we'll be stuck with covering McCain as the only opposition to the new politics of hope, a man whose mind, vision and originality are as arid as his home state. One shivers at the thought of five months of such grueling, grinding crap.

But wait. Hillary Clinton isn't complete toast yet, no matter what the New York Post bellows in largest of type. Yeah, that's right, recall the media. We always have Hillary, just as long as she has access to her joint checking account. Lordy lord, praise the loopholes in campaign finance reform, for unto the non-elitist filthy rich there is always the healthcare option of costly intervention and resuscitation.

This realization among the media isn't really a conspiracy in the conventional use of the word; that is, secretive mass huddling in dark, foggy alleys in which grand designs are hatched and then executed with tight, organizational and malevolent efficiency. It's more of a happy, great awakening that droppeth on media members individually and coextensively like the gentle rain. The result just looks organized.

So it was, I think, that Mr. Simon was merely operating under the oppressiveness of having blown McCain's nomination and the liberation of any number under 2025.

Sure, she still has a shot at this thing, although she doesn't -- and that is precisely what Simon and, by now, many, many others have written and, for reasons enumerated above, will persist in writing.

Let us return to that passage expressed in the present: "she needs momentum, spin and fear." Good enough. After which, however, Simon pretty much demolished all hope on each count.

Her momentum, he said, "was dealt a setback Tuesday night" -- a "setback" elsewhere deemed the equivalent of the effects of a neutron bomb. And yep, her "pretty predictable" upcoming victories in Kentucky, West Virginia and Puerto Rico will still leave Barack Obama with a bankable lock on pledged delegates. Try spinning that, in addition to downspinning Obama's equal number of upcoming victories in Oregon, Montana and South Dakota.

That leaves the fear card that Clinton operatives have been slapping on superdelegates; the dangled fear that Obama could still be full of unwelcome surprises. But, so could Hillary, conceded Simon, and the superdelegates know this as well.

Hence the long of it, the short of it, the up, down and lateral every which way of it is this: Hillary is indeed toast. Yet Simon insisted on wrapping his piece with, "if she doesn't get the nomination this time."

Well, Roger, if I don't win the state lottery today I'll be disappointed by tonight. Now, would you harbor any hesitation in predicting my mood?

Come on, Roger Simon & Media Friends. Be men about it. Just say it and be done with it: It is over. Official time of Hillary's political demise: midnight, May 6 -- and may her suspended campaign rest in peace.

It's Too Late -- West Virginia, Kentucky Wins Won't Save Clinton

Sure, we've been hearing for months the cycle of the media writing Hillary Clinton's political obituary, only to be frustrated when she scores a major comeback. But it's different this time, for two reasons: 1) Hillary's campaign is $20 million in the hole. You cannot mount a credible campaign when it's drowning in an ocean of red ink. The truth is, Hillary's fundraising has dried up, with most of her donors maxed out -- they've reached their maximum legal donation limit. It's also no accident that donations to the Clinton campaign plummeted immediately after she refused to backtrack from her saber-rattling comments about "obliterating" Iran -- which outraged anti-war Democrats. 2) The superdelegates are breaking toward Obama big time. He's overtaken Clinton among the superdelegates to become the undisputed front-runner for the Democratic nomination. As of midnight Eastern Time on May 13, Obama needs only 150 more delegates to clinch the nomination. At the rate the superdelegates keep going Obama's way, Clinton's expected victories in the West Virginia and Kentucky primaries will come too little, too late to save her candidacy. Oregon is a lost cause for the former first lady; Obama's up by 15 points there. Not only is Clinton weak in the Pacific Northwest, but a new poll conducted for San Francisco's KPIX-TV shows that if the California primary -- which Clinton won on Super Tuesday in February -- was instead held now, Obama would win, 56 percent to 44 percent (Don't be surprised if there's a move in Sacramento to push the California primary back to its traditional June date in 2012). There's a thin line between persistent optimism and denial of reality. Clinton's campaign has crossed that line.

It ain't over til it's over

"John McCain's Lazaruslike return to the field" was the result of a decision by the Republican arm of the corporate oligarchy to make him the nominee. The media arm of same was then instructed to put the spotlight on him to the exclusion of the other candidates. It wasn't about anything McCain did except agree to be the lead actor. (Remind anyone else of Reagan?). It probably did make the pundits gun-shy about daring to speak the obvious though. That's probably why they don't want to declare the Clinton campaign dead. Who knows what could happen given the dominance of the corporate-political machine over the process, voters be damned. PLUS, while we're all paying attention to the "race" we aren't hearing about the tanking economy, global warming, and war on Iran.

Follow the Money

It's that simple. It predicts the outcome. Hillary's campaign coffers are depleted - now it's down to their retirement chest (which is scandalously large). Despite raising $10M the day after the PA primary victory, and the recent glowing BS of her "finding her voice", she still can't raise the $1M/day needed from her supporters. So, if you had about $100M in your retirement fund, and were depleting it at a rate of about $1M/day, how many days would you choose to write million dollar checks at that rate? Especially when you know that its being wasted on a hopeless cause? I'd say she will be out in a week, on a high note after wins in West Virginia and Kentucky, but before the embarrassment of another big loss in Oregon.

fundraising down

I thought it interesting the other day when I was reading Americablog and one of the bloggers on the site was writing how Hillary is hurting the Democratic party. Their site fundraises for Senate and House candidates and he mentioned that fundraising on the site was down from 2006. He blamed Hillary. What an idiot. When his site, the formerly great Buzzflash, KOS, Eschaton and all the rest have effectively said "Eff you!" to half their readership, is it any wonder fundraising is down for both their sites AND the candidates they're supporting? I also find it interesting that Buzzflash had to run into May to meet its April fundraising goal. I have given to Buzzflash and EVERY site mentioned above. I'll never give another cent to any of them. I'll bet any amount of money that readership is down at all those sites. All one has to do is read the hateful vitriol from the bloggers and from the people who comment and say, "I'm outta here." Hey, bloggers can write what they feel, it's their sites. At the same time they should realize that alienating half their readership can have an adverse effect on their bank accounts when advertisers and readers disappear. Calvin Dallas

Progressive Sites = Elected Democrats

On more than one occasion I have read on KOS, their endgame is to elect Democrats. If there is a perception that one Dem candidate or the other is damaging the mission -- they say so. Maybe it does offend. But, it's also true. Hillary has disrespected a lot of the people, who for years have been the backbone of the Democratic Party. First it was remarks about Jesse Jackson, and South Carolina, then it was remarks about MoveOn.org, and "party activists," and then it was people who vote in caucus states. "Party activists" - for heaven's sake. Think about the words. What would any political party be without them? She didn't miss too many people except the "white working class." If you don't want to support truly "independent" media, that's your choice. If you want to read "all Hillary" all the time, there is always the NY Times, (which is also losing readers, and CNN, which is also losing viewers.) Fund raising is down, just about every place, I would expect for several reasons. The first of which would be that people are having their homes foreclosed upon, they are losing their jobs, the price of a gallon of milk and a gallon of gas costs about the same. The prices on just about everything have gone up. For some folks, times are tough. And it's all you can do to pay the bills. There's not much "disposable" income these days. My plans for my "stimulus payment" is to continue to support of independent media, my candidates of choice, and maybe with what's left over, I'll buy a tank of gas. That will probably take care of it.

Wag that Dog

...Wow Calvin! You're attributing national trends in donations to little old Buzzflash, Kos and other blog sites, along with their blogging minions. That would have never occured to me! Quite a compliment to their readership. I'm amazed that Buzzflash has to work so hard to raise the little capital it needs, given its national importance. Ever consider that the decreased investment and the angry bloggers are signs of a reaction to something bigger?

let me lay it out for you in simple terms

Lots of people like a web site = lots of hits ($ from advertisers), more contributions to the site and more hits on links to candidates the site supports. Don't like the site = hits go down, $ from advertisers declines, fewer contributions are made to the site and $ to candidates through the site dry up. It boils down to this: more eyes, more $, more influence. Fewer eyes, less $, less influence. Don't read anything else into it. Conclusion: "angry" bloggers' bank accounts wanting. Calvin Dallas

Retraction

Sorry, I mis-read your first post, and thus mis-interpreted it. I thought you were referring to less contributions to both the campaigns, parties, and blog sites. But on second reading you appeared to limit it to blog site donations. You are correct on the effect of partasnship on blog site bottom lines. They have had to make the choice of how to run with stories and must be willing to suffer the financial consequences of telling the truth as they see it. Buzzflash addressed this a few weeks ago, and I praise its courage in the face of dwindling assets. The price of freedom I suppose. Perhaps reasonable partisans can rejoin to continue the fight together after the nominee is selected.

come together

I will be doing everything possible to ensure a Democrat is elected in November. I'll be haranguing my fellow co-workers to get registered if they aren't already. I'll be lobbying them to go all out for Obama. Right now I'm looking for a good pic of Obama and Michelle I can print out and post in my cubicle. The Hillary desktop pic is gone. We must come together and we will come together to do what must be done for the good of the country. Calvin Dallas

Thats great....

Very exciting to take the fight to McCain as a team...less than six months to go!

Remember that scene from

Remember that scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail when King Arthur fights the Black Knight? Hillary is the dismembered knight threatening to butt Arthur with his head.

"All right, then - we'll call it a draw." ;)

I'm all FOR that, myself - Hillary can call it a draw all she wants...if she finally quits and lets Obama concentrate on beating McCain this Fall.

But she won't, will she? She and her surrogates (including the ones on here who can be guaranteed to jump me and anyone who disagrees w/Their Annointed Hillary) are SO invested in a "Bidness as Usual" Rethug Lite DLC victory that they will do their level best to scuttle Obama's election since they failed to scuttle his nomination. It's like watching the DLC (including The Cintons) stab the rightfully-elected Connecticut Democratic nominee, Ned Lamont, in the back to get the Quisling "Holy Joe" Lieberman (and all his Big Insurance dollars!) elected as an "independent".... ::contemptuous spit!::

An excellent Python reference

Another one from "The Holy Grail" is the elderly man being thrown onto the plague death cart pleading "I'm not dead yet." That could apply both to Hillary's campaign as well as to the media's absurd insistence that she still has a chance.

"Maybe if we ignore her, she will just go away"...

Sorry, No Such Luck!
Did you know that Bill Clinton made $10 million for lobbying Kazakhstan's VERSON OF SADDAM HUSSEIN for a uranium mining contract... and that the Ten Million Bucks is just a DOWN-PAYMENT on another $120 million to come, boiled-alive prisoners and human rights advocates be damned?
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/31/us/politics/31donor.html

EVERY Democratic voter, and anyone who hopes for some sanity out of our government, should have that link at their fingertips.

Sadly, former Pres. Bill is only following in VP Dick (dastardly) Cheney's footsteps, for while Cheney was Chairman and CEO of Halliburton co. during the late 1990s, he was dealing with the _original_ Saddam Hussein behind... the back of the US sanctions on Iraq! http://www.globalpolicy.org/security/sanction/iraq1/oilforfood/2001/0627chen.htm

Cheney's duplicity is all the more despicable, because in 1997 he signed the PNAC NewAmericanCentury.org manifesto.... calling for the attack and invasion of Iraq as necessary, precisely because those dastardly Europeans were dealing with Iraq behind the US/UN sanctions, making Iraq once again into a regional and international threat!
http://newamericancentury.org/statementofprinciples.htm

Speaking of "duplicitous treachery", notice Lewis "Scooter" Libby's signature on that PNAC "attack and invade Iraq now" manifesto. Libby of course would be convicted (despite a sympathetic jury who noted that he was only the fall-guy for higher-ups in the White House) of PERJURY and OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE, for covering up his, Cheney's, and Karl Rove's role in the "outing" of an entire CIA undercover operation, as a means of smearing a prominent critic of the administration's 2003 war rationals (lies-to-war), when Libby was VP Cheney's Chief of Staff shortly before and after their 2004 re-election campaign.

With $100 million in the bank from the Clinton's last eight years, and another $100 million set to role in from the Kazakhstan uranium kickbacks, alone, the Clinton's ain't going nowhere. ON a positive note, every time you get mad at em' - the whole DINO, Repub wolves in sheeps clothing crew - you can send a couple bucks to "the other guy's" campaign... or work to unite all the disparate "liberal media" voices into at least one national outlet with some impact on our lazy, lackadaisical, run-from-the-GOP-flamethrower Congress.

It is beyond absurd - it is a tragi-comedy farce of universe proportions - that the media would rake the Obama campaign over the coals for a 20 second clip of Rev. Wright in the heat of a "hellfire and damnation" Sunday morning sermon, while giving Cheney and Clinton a FREE PASS for multi-million dollar contracts with murderous dictators.

The main problem here is

The main problem here is that if the media do that then Digby will scold them for having had the gall to declare Hillary's campaign dead. I don't know how the media are supposed to improve the truthfulness of their reporting if they get scolded regardless of the probable truthfulness of what they report or opine. It seems to me we should lay off them when what they report as probably true seems probably true. But who am I? (I am not that Barry Schwartz, or my opinion might actually matter.)

Fear of Digby?

The mainstream media fear criticism only from the right, because that is where their financial interests lie. They are part of the greater corporate world and cover the news with that thought firmly fixed in their minds. Reporters who take a different point of view tend not to last very long.

Can we change the subject

Can we change the subject now? Please? This has gotten so, so old.

Maybe if we just ignore her she'll finally go away.

A question on demographics

It would be interesting to know the military vote. It is also disconcerting to hear the media, and the Clinton campaign focus on "the white working male/female vote." It is as if "white" and "working" are forever linked. It is also as if "working" doesn't apply to Asians, Latinos, and Blacks. It also is insulting as h***.

It is over, but not until it's over

We might as well be writing about intimate details of Japanese culture if we pretend to know just what is going on in the Clinton campaign right now. First of all, it's like a great ship, it takes a lot of water to stop it once it gets up steam. Secondly, the passengers all want to get to the other shore. Thirdly, it's in a race and it wouldn't be healthy to just turn off the overheated engines. Finally, a little time to decide upon when to turn toward another destination, or to fall in behind the frontrunner would be prudent. It is over, but this is no time to throw rocks at the Clinton campaign if you want both ships to arrive in port safely in November.

You're assuming an awful lot.

There are a ton of us out here that don't care about cooling the Clinton engine safely. We would like to see it blow all its bearings. We don't want it to decide on another direction. We don't want it to arrive in port safely. We want it to crash and burn, never to be heard from again. My first vote was for McGovern in'72. Since then I have always voted for the Democrat, even when I wasn't thrilled. There have been Democrats I was lukewarm about, some I was unhappy about, some I barely supported. But Hillary Clinton is the first Democratic candidate for any office I have despised.

Bettysbad - Satisfying as Watching Hillary Crash&Burn May Be

It could also very easily split the Democratic Party in two and ensure a McCain victory, especially if she and her surrogates decide to "pull a Lieberman" rather than gracefully conceding to Obama. (Hey, why not? Lieberman's DLC, The Clintons are DLC...and w/their help it worked out for him personally, even if it was a giant F*@K YOU! to Democrats and progressives everywhere!) That's why we need to give her a "soft landing" and a way she can exit with some shreds of dignity intact - undeserving of it as she has proven herself throughout this campaign to be.

Just keep telling yourself, "It's not for her, it's for the Good of the Country.... It's NOT for HER, it's for the Good of the Country...."

Demographics

Wonder if anyone out there has numbers on the US Military vote. Who are the Vets voting for and what are the demographics for their votes? Who are the under 40 Vets preferring and who are the over 40 choosing? I know its a bit off topic, but I'd love some info on this, as it relates to the CCCP not covering the topic.

Your Conservative Corporate Controlled Press (CCCP) in action

Your CCCP only cares about one thing and that's more deregulation so they can become even more powerful and manipulative. And the two persons who will enable them to be even more corrupt are John Mc Cain and Hill-Billy. Hill-Billy has shown her true colors, when the $109 million (now down to around 97 million) Goldwater Girl flirted with Screwpert Murdoch and then outright kissed Scaife's ass, well you can sure tell what a person is by the company she keeps. Hill-Billy is the penultimate spoiled brat, the 21st Century version of Baby Jane Hudson. Yep, if Baby Jane Hillary can't get the Presidency, she's more than willing to run over Blanche Obama to make sure that her BFF Senile John sleazes his way in. Please if you can get out and work in West Virginia for Obama and give Baby Jane Hillary the butt-bongoing she so richly deserves. You can bet that The Bearded Leslie over at the Conservative News Network will continue to race-bait the American people with Rev. Wright as the Ultimate Boogey Man as he remains so curiously silent over John Hagee's desire to exterminate the Jewish race on a scale Hitler never imagined. And the Bearded Leslie will keep so hush hush about Rev. Fat Fart Hagee's claim that the Catholic Church is the Great Whore. Hmmmmm, I wonder why Timmy, Andy Sullivan, Maureen Dowd and Tweety don't say a word about Hagee either? Why it couldn't be because Hagee is white, could it???????????????????

I love that abreviation

CCCP the old communist government of Russia. ROFLMAO.
