Wright's "Blowback"

THE FIFTH COLUMNIST by P.M. Carpenter

Here's what the New York Times had to say about the Rev. Jeremiah Wright's causal assessment of 9/11: "A useful and timely alert."

Newsday had this to say: "[He] is on to something." And from the Nation came this: "A straight-talking analysis."

Barack Obama, on the other hand, called it "inflammatory and appalling."

What gives?

Hold on. I got my notes mixed up.

Yes, Obama's fire was indeed centered on Wright's words, but what the New York Times, Newsday and the Nation were addressing was the first installment of Professor Chalmers Johnson's "Blowback" trilogy, which nevertheless said precisely the same as Wright:

What the daily press reports as the malign acts of "terrorists" ... often turn out to be blowback from earlier American operations.

... And what U.S. officials denounce as unprovoked terrorist attacks on its innocent citizens are often meant as retaliation for previous American imperial actions. Terrorists attack innocent and undefended American targets precisely because American soldiers and sailors firing cruise missiles from ships at sea or sitting in B-52 bombers at extremely high altitudes or supporting brutal and repressive regimes from Washington seem invulnerable. As members of the Defense Science Board wrote in a 1997 report to the undersecretary of defense for acquisition and technology, "Historical data show a strong correlation between U.S. involvement in international situations and an increase in terrorist attacks against the United States."

Useful, timely, insightful and straight-talking. Bravo.

Now let's put Johnson in the vernacular, and without mongrelizing his message. We'll permit Wright a whack at it: "We are indignant because the stuff we have done overseas is now brought right back to our own front yards. America's chickens are coming home to roost."

Perhaps a trifle academically indelicate, but that's also the stuff the multitudes can comprehend with dispatch. Yet rather than being evaluated as useful, timely, insightful and straight-talking, it gets trashed as inflammatory and appalling, and by far more observers than just Sen. Obama.

Again, what gives?

It seems the Rev. Wright is being asked to head to the back of some Straight-Talking Express bus. Quiet, boy, only distinguished white professors are permitted, with impunity, to gussy up the patently obvious in books that the great unwashed will never read, nor should they. That might crimp our imperial style.

Let us, rather, console ourselves with the culpability-expunging idea that terrorists, before striking, anywhere, merely haul out a world map and a dart. Or, we could buy into the retailed fallacy that those swarthy infidels merely hate our cherished freedoms -- such as speaking truth to power, or even worse, to the great and ignorantly unwashed -- of which we'd never dream of staging a hi-tech lynching.

OK, enough with the sarcasm for now. Still, I shall await an analysis, academic or vernacular, of any essential difference between what the acclaimed white professor wrote and the appalling black preacher said.

If Rev. Wright was guilty of anything, other than harshly speaking harsh truths, it was sins of omission. He failed (at least in the video segment I've seen) to exempt the actual victims of 9/11 from personal culpability. He also failed (again, in the narrow segment I've seen) to equally passionately denounce the always-unjustified horror of terrorism against the innocent.

I can offer no proof that the good reverend shares my detestation of both omissions and especially their meanings, because the media, in turn, failed to ask him before blasting the video all over the airwaves; what punch it would have lacked had the media done so. But I'll assume he does, and perhaps someone with a microphone will someday get around to asking him.

It would also seem rather urgent that someone ask Sen. Clinton if she has ever met Prof. Johnson -- that academically acclaimed but nonetheless traitorous scourge of America who, as far as I know, has also never explicitly denied that he either condemns the innocent or condones the barbarous methodology of their slaughter.

Has Sen. Clinton ever sat at his knee, attended one of his public lectures, read one of his books or corresponded with him in any way?

How appalling it would be should we find that she has, because there's no record of her subsequent denunciations.

I shall, however, cut her the same slack and assume she does not, in fact, condone monstrous carnage. Maybe she too will get "lucky" and someone will ask her -- you know, just to clarify things, over ... and over ... and over.

Because for now, we just can't know for sure. We could, after all, have a Democratic United States Senator running for the White House who believes it's just fine that thousands of Americans pay with their lives for the imperial stupidity of their government. But which one?

Yes, this calls for tough questions.

Come on. It is we whom the media need to cut some slack -- unless of course they believe us to be as intellectually unwashed as does our government or any others who attempt to profit from this nonsense.

They ran the one on Bill.

The MM ran the video of Bill hugging Monica. They ran the one of the Dean scream so no reason not to run the Wright sermon. Is there?

The Mission

Wrong again, I supported Edwards and will not be voting for Clinton.

Obama Still Can Save The Day

"How?" "By retracting his statement about his finding Reverend Wright's words to be 'inflammatory and appalling.'" "Anything else?" "'That the pidgeons did come home to roost on 9/11 and may do so again unless we put an end to the Iraq War, negotiate with Iran plus turning things around here at home.'" "Won't this be perceived as a flip-flop?" "What's a flip-flop compared to the alternative." "Which is?" "Caving-in."

So what's new?

I've heard sermons similar to the ones preached by Rev Wright in churches that I have attended. The preachers weren't quite as agitated but the message was much the same. Call me unpatriotic but I do not believe that the U.S. has a right to take whatever we want wherever we find it and install vile puppet dictators when the locals don't comply. 95% of the world agrees with that position. We have used our military too many times to protect corporate interests and caused untold hardship, death and destruction on millions of people around the world just so a few fat cats here could stay flush with cash. As always, We the People pick up the tab when our military is used like a corporate police force. The chickens are finally coming home to roost. Our economy is tanking, we're in debt way past our eyeballs and if things get really rough here, don't expect the rest of the world to come to our rescue. Much of the world will be happy that karma finally caught up with us. I am very disappointed that the message Rev. Wright was trying to teach got lost. I am much more disappointed that Obama let that message get lost. I still think he's the best one still standing because Clinton and George W. McCain will give us more of the same.

Should We Condemn Reverend Wright For Saying God Damn America?

"Why, because he believes in God?" "So what's the fuss all about?" "The usual, diverting our attention." "From what?" "Seeing to it that in November we elect a president who'll go on to end the Iraq War, negotiate with Iran plus turning things around here at home." "And then what sort of world?" "It'll be up to us."

Condemn Rev. Wright

Of course not. This site is for condemning Hillary. You mean you didn't know?

Does a harsh message _always_ have to be smeared with honey?

I really don't have a problem with the Reverend. He had two messages on the clips I heard: 1) Hillary doesn't know what it's like to be black. Seems pretty obvious. Anyone living in a large city has probably encountered the person who is a cross between Anton and Homie that America has driven crazy. They would stand on a street corner and lecture a deaf, dumb and blind albino with leprosy that she doesn't know what oppression is like. And that sort of person who hates everybody to try not to hate himself is scary. But I didn't get that from the Reverend. Seems to me he was stating the facts that Hillary is from a class that hasn't had the experiences conducive to empathy with a large segment of America. 2) America, and Americans, do have a lot of karma to answer for. And maybe it's time to cut through the polite "I'm OK, You're OK" BS of decades past and start calling evil evil again. It's never made a lot of friends. I doubt that Jeremiah or Ezekiel got invited to the better cocktail parties after a long rant in the town square about how God would smite the first born and invaders would rape the women and children and the tribes would be cast to the wind. But when a society is collapsing, these people arise and we'd be a lot better off listening to them. Was the Reverend scapegoating homosexuals or liberals as the cause of our downfall? I don't think so. He was talking about the oppressions and murder in Palestine and apartheid South Africa that the U.S. has supported. And we did support them. The Reverend was just speaking the truth and suggesting that the evil that goes out comes back. But he wasn't speaking pleasantly. Thank goodness Jesus never lost it and did something rash -- like, say, driving the money changers out of the temple.

Obama Has To Stop Letting The Opposition Decide Who He Is

"Why?" "Because he'll lose this election unless he comes out forcefully for ending the Iraq War, negotiating with Iran plus turning things around here at home." "So what about his labeling of Wright's statement as 'inflammatory and appalling?'" "Scary." "But if not Barack Obama and not Hillary Clinton, then who?" "Ralph Nader or Cynthia McKinney." "Can either of them win?" "It'll be up to us."

Great Dialog

What a breath of fresh air... an articulate dialog taking place in the virtual realms... what an unexpected but profoundly rewarding surprise. As I watched Obama distance himself from the statements made by Rev. Wright... I kept wondering just when was he was going to simply say "Enough is enough... I'm not going to continue being baited by the media when there are too many legitimately important issues that demand our attention." When was he going to say that he wasn't kidding in the least the last few hundred times that he has stated that he was going to be a unifier and not a divisive candidate? When was he going to finally state unequivocally that he is only responsible for the things he says... for no one else's words... and that if the media want to know what Reverend Wright meant in any of his sermons... ASK BROTHA WRIGHT... WHITE MAN! This petty crap about being made to denounce the behavior or statements of others is getting stale.. overkill at its finest actually. This however brings up an issue that America has been ignoring for decades now and that issue is "PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY." We are so concerned with what everyone else is doing or saying that no one feels the need to be responsible for the self... but damned if they aren't being hounded to take responsibility for what others say or do. What is wrong with this picture I ask? To add insult to injury... I witnessed MOUSY CNN's Anderson Cooper practically demanding that Obama denounce his entire church because of two snippets of sound bytes (most likely taken out of context) that he and a good many of the sheeple viewership did not agree appropriate. GIVE ME A FREAKING BREAK! But did Obama stand strong against the current and grow a spine? Sadly and unfortunately... HELL NO! "When once a republic is corrupted, there is no possibility of remedying any of the growing evils but by removing the corruption and restoring its lost principles;every other correction is either useless or a new evil."- Thomas Jefferson http://www.cosmicrose.com

Obama revelations

What if both camps are being attacked from outside forces

The Bubble has burst!!

I tried to tell you kids to stop all the hate Rhetoric against Hillary. All the little one liners you thought were cute & funny. 90% of them lies. But no, you were willing to do anything to get Obama elected. You probably have many Obama supporters that will not vote for her if she's the candidate, because of that. You can take up for & swoon all you want with Obama, he is now toast!!! No way he can win the Presidency now. The Video's are disgusting & racist. Obama has been going to his church for 20 years. He donated $22,500 dollars to this church in 2006. His wife & kids go weekly & are subject to this racist crap. No wonder Michelle Obama said what she said. Obama has said he is his "mentor" & "spiritual advisor". He's trying to put up a smoke screen now, but that's not going to work. Yelling "GOD DAMN AMERICA" three or four times with people jumping up & down, will forever be in peoples mind! Those of you trying to pump him up & save his candidacy can forget it. He's just lost all his so called (not proven) cross over Republican & independent voters. In fact I look for him to lose some of his Super Delegates if not most of them. The Media is handling this with kid gloves, as they have with Obama all along. But they won't be able to kill it, the Video's are all over the internet. Fox news, Rush, Karl Rove, Bill O'reilly all have copies of the Video's. They will use them over & over again. If I were you guys I would be disappointed & angry. But my anger would be at Obama for the Con game he has played. He's lied to everybody. And believe me, there is much more coming on Obama. He gave a lot of people a dream, but it was a false dream!!! Not only that, he may have destroyed our chances of having a Democrat as President. And it was so important for this country!! There are two links below that would be good for you to read. They have already started!!! http://www.tnr.com/politics/story.html?id=aa0cd21b-0ff2-4329-88a1-69c6c268b304 http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/daily/site_031308/content/01125106.guest.html

Oh, right

Yepper, buddy, those are two sites that I can't wait to get up in the morning to read. I'll just hurry on right over there if you say it would be good for me. heheheh

I was wondering if you knew how insane you sound

I mean the "toast" comment is a real bag of wind. Then I saw your two links. And I realized the truth. You ARE insane. Do the world a favor? Go blog at the two insanity spots you want us to go to. I hope you get a computer virus there; to match the BRAIN virus you got there.

Citizen over 50

Citizen over 50...... As I expected, more silly one liners to my request to just look at what is coming for Obama. I have no ideal who those people are. In my search for information I will look at anything that seems to be connected to the subject. You can learn a lot that way, good or bad. It's obvious that you search with blinders on!! "You ARE insane & I hope you get a computer virus there; to match the BRAIN virus you got there." are child like insults. The disrespect & instant hate comments that you attack with are why people are starting to call Obama supporters a "cult". In your rush to "Obama at any cost", you have even aligned yourself with the message of Rev. Wrights radial rants & "hate" America messages. I'm not naive enough to not know America has helped cause a lot of our own problems. But to slander & incite racial divide in our country, to most Americans, is not productive. Go ahead, make excuses for Rev. Wright & his racist rants & Obama's connection with him. You are condoning racial divide. And that is unexceptionable to most Americans. As one of many, that served in our Military, I am becoming ashamed of the unpatriotic Rhetoric that's coming from your views. It's obvious that none of you have served your country in Uniform. For years the Republican party has questioned the Democratics for their lack of Patriotism. They have used it like a Sledgehammer against us. You have proven that there is a segment of our party that fits that description. I served in the Military to give you the right of "Free Speech" but not the right of "Destructive Free Speech". Lighten up on the slander of our country. Obama cannot be elected now & we probably have lost any chance of having a Democrat as President. This will not go away. The 527's are itching for Obama to win our nomination. By the time they are done with him, he won't get 30% of the vote against McCain. McCain will continue the war & continue the George Bush policys. I thought we were all on the same team about changing all that. We had a chance to "Right America's ship",we've let the Republicans & the Republican Main street Media divide us again. So, So very sad.

Personal Responsibility is a bitch

Yes, Reverend Wright's demanding that rich white Americans take responsibility for their immoral and illegal actions and the effects that they have caused is clearly racist. In case you haven't noticed, Barrack Obama is half white. I guess he hates half of himself. It's funny that so called Democrats like yourself claim to want change, but you will continue to vote for candidates that pretend that America is perfect and blameless and doesn't need to even think about what the consequences of its' actions are or what needs to happen in order to improve this nation and this world. But go along now you Hannity and O'reilly democrats, support your wars of aggression, support your Dictators, support your overthrow of elected officials at the behest of oil and fruit companies. Continue to stick you heads in the sand and ignore the immorality around you. But when problems arise that adversly affect you, please don't say that we never told you so.

MSM's foolishness

I heard several times on MSNBC and CNN that the reason this is a problem for Obama is that video tapes of these sermons are readily available and more damaging material could probably be found. So my challenge to them would be: having run the same three 10 second clips on a constant loop for the last 48 hours, how about one of you fine upstanding institutions run one of Wright's full sermons so the American people can see how deep his hateful anti-Americanism runs? Safe that perhaps you would be showing a thoughtful, cogently presented & completely accurate critic of US foreign policy instead of ginning the citizenry up into another nationalistic frenzy...hmm? That possibility, faint though it may be, i know precludes us from hearing the Rev. Wright in his own words.

Sounds anti-American to me!

Not only does this minister show racism but he also says that blacks should not sing God Bless America, but God Damn America. Obama has belonged to this church for 20 years with this man as his mentor. Now he says he condemns what this man says. What a crock! He didn't remove himself from his congregation and never said a word about his sermons, until he felt that the man would be used against him. Obama is not a man of his word nor is he a man of change. He has taken corruption to even another level. This is not what America needs. Another liar and corrupt politician. He will say anything to achieve his goal. This man sounds just like George Bush prior to when he was elected. Smooth talker and no brain!

Mission Accomplished !!

So this is what it comes to....you won't research, you don't examine (even your own life)...you simply drink the kool-aid as presented. Not to try to validate or argue for anything Rev. Wright says (it doesn't need it)....its HIS opinion, not Baracks. JUST LIKE YOU, I have friends who have made MANY comments which others might find offensive, but the question here is, do you want those offended people tarring you with that brush----simply because you're associated with them? Will YOU abandon YOUR friends if others insisted you do so?---because they didn't happen to like their stance on something? I don't think so. It disturbs me that the political process in the country has descended to nothing more than a sanitizing process that squeezes any vision, genuine values, compassion, and truthfulness out of anyone running. You're required to do the impossible, that is, be ALL things to ALL people, and thats simply impossible. Then there are the 'system gamers'--the COMMENTATORS who pose as 'GOP/Demo 'strategists'---who really only observe and COMMENT on what the REAL campaign strategists are supposedly doing----or so they think! These people are the bane of real, competent reporting. They ONLY care about THEIR ratings, THEIR exclusives, and THEIR careers (not in terms of accomplishments; but rather, of securing (and keeping) big salaries thru self-promotion). The ubiqitous, ever truth-bending purveyors of all you come to believe...... So don't help the scandal-mongers expand the lie by spreading statements like 'Obama is not a man of his word nor is he a man of change. He has taken corruption to even another level.' It doesn't help the REAL agenda.

What is the real mission???

As for voting Democrat this year, I will not and have changed to an independent! I come to this site to read the so called progressive comments! They are disgusting and contain half truths and lies. The Obama gang will destroy the Democratic Party, not me! The progressives have made me realize that for 49 years of voting, this party has become idiotic and insane. They destroy as many of the candidates as possible, with the exception of their golden boy! Anyone making a comment about their candidate will reap the anger of their God! As for research, I have researched every candidate that requires my vote, so maybe the ones not doing the research, are those that expect total obedience to their chosen one. I have listened to the recording of Obama's minister and mentor. We have in this nation, many black people who deserve to be president, but Obama is not one. All we need is more hate filled rhetoric and corruption in this nation. The scandal mongers are the progressives that have smeared and spread lies about Obama's opponents.

The Real Mission........

In simplest terms: TO WIN THE PRESIDENCY!!! Neva, if you change to Independent because of this Wright situation---fine. If you decide to vote for McCain (or Nader) in protest, again,...fine. Thats your choice and thats your right. But, you prove my point. I know my following comment will draw a lot of fire--but so be it. What I see with fair-weather 'Democrats' like you is how (like FOX-deluded Republicans), you mix and blur incongruent lines of thought and reason into some pretzel-logic panoply of self-delusion. I would like you to go back over a lot of Obama bashing/Pro Hillary posts that have posted during PM's commentaries---and a very large number of them are seemingly middle-aged women who feel THEIR place in history has somehow been usurped by we 'Obama "Gangsters"'---simply because we look with disdain on the machinations Hillary wrought upon herself. I could very well say using your logic : 'many women deserve to be president, but Hillary is not the one". Now I'm not saying with any certainty you're a Hillary supporter---but I'm betting you are. If so, then you have put YOUR desires ahead of party interests and why so many of of you are so venomous regarding Obama. Thus, some of you with unbridled glee rivaled only by the Hannity-type Repubs find something of merit in this situation. Think about it: This issue is tantamount to me being irritated with your next-door neighbor's loud, offensive music and blaming YOU for knowing them for several years and not telling them to shut it down!!----Its illogical!! Do you not see this? Wheres the INDIVIDUAL responsibility here we're all so fond of directing to certain groups?? You wrote: "I have listened to the recording of Obama's minister and mentor. We have in this nation, many black people who deserve to be president, but Obama is not one." .......Well, do you not see how you have transferred to person B--the actions and deeds of person A? For some of you to so readily subscribe an instantaneous (and I feel long-held)'aha---we got 'em!---See what we've been saying?' It goes beyond this issue. Some of you have deeply resented his success and subsequent "de-flowering" of your Clinton mythology---to the degree you really only want to see him fail now---AT ANY COST !! Mathematically, Hillary cannot win. So we are ALL obligated to heal and unite behind him---for the future's sake. But you seem to feel that to do this is to commit "total obedience to THEIR (?!) chosen one ". And since HE IS the Democratic nominee---whether you accept that or not---you are compromising 'the mission' by expanding (and perpetrating) illogical lies, thereby, possibly damaging (or defeating) him in November. Winning THAT....once again-----is THE MISSION. Think about it.

The Mission

Wrong again! I am not a supporter of Clinton and will be voting for Nader. As for being an elder woman, I have probably done more and seen more than anyone of you so called new progressives. I am not so easily taken in by dreams, hopes and change. As for being left out as a woman, not hardly. I am a retired veteran, who served my country and have traveled the world. The so called new progressives have taken the party down to a new level. They see evil in all other candidates but are blind to, the known facts about Obama. The smear and half truths being reported about Clinton or any of the others is disgusting. I have a hard time telling the difference between you people and the antics of the Republican Party. For people, like me, the choice is easy. The loss of the Democrats in this election can be tied to those that are trying to mimic the Republican Party Standards.

Follow Up II to The Mission

You wrote: there are: 'half truths being reported about Clinton or any of the others (and it) is disgusting.' In the name of fairness, I'll tell you what.... YOU identify what 'half truths' you think we 'so-called' progressives' have lied about concerning Hillary; and I'LL do the requisite research to 'enlighten' you on just how shallow we 'so-called progressives' are--along with pertinent and relevant links!!----How 'bout that? Nobody HAS to LIE about her---theres plenty of historical truth readily available. One question I have for you-----how did ALL your much-vaunted years of 'progressive experience' lead you to have so little 'bank' in store----that the possibility of 'new blood' (and thats what they are) distraughts you so? The party has not gone 'down to a new level', to the contrary, its just moving ahead 'progressively'----for the first time this millenium---if people like you (and me) just get the hell outta their way !!

Follow Up----to 'The Mission'

Neva---normally I move on and seldom go back to the previous days post, however, I was curious about your particular response(s)(if any). Surprisingly, there were. So I feel obligated to respond to you. Once again, I go back to my original allegation of: "mission accomplished." The problem in November can be summed up by you and your posts. Just multiply yourself x an unknown factor and you'll see the problem. This election process has gotten so personal that we're already near irreparably damaged. I THINK it was all 'rigged' to be exactly this way. Given the enormous challenges the Republicans face this year, the only possible chance for victory was/is a 'divide and conquer' strategy---reinforced through repetitive drivel spewed by the Corp/Repub-owned media. To wit, your posts (and what transpired here between ThomasM and Citizenover50, for example). Ok, you supported Edwards, fine, I like Edwards too; but HE LOST!----AGAIN! It could be argued that he had a built-in negative with his own personal status vs. his populist msg; or Democrats simply didn't want to go back down that Kerry road again---who knows??? But to subscibe the defeats of ALL the candidates to the eventual selection of Obama by the voters AND then to reduce that to simple 'idol worship' insults your/our reasoning processes and reduces your whining about it to a sense of 'sour grapes' and bitterness. You've gone so far now as to reduce us to 'so-called new progressives' and 'cultists'. I'd venture to say, MANY of us have 'progressive' records equal to (or greater than yours). For myself, my family ties go back Democratically to when we still called ourselves 'liberals'. I too, am military (Air Force), and old enough to have to carry a Vietnam era draft card; also old enough to still have scars from campus protests; and remember well the war-mongering of Nixon, Reagan and Bush(s). That said,...sure, some have said school-yard things about Hillary----buts thats to be expected anytime more than two people speak. The fact is, most have only told the simple facts about her----she is/was corrupt---THAT is historical FACT---soon to be proven. Look at it like you're an NFL team----everyone starts the season hoping for, and standing by their team; after you don't make the play-offs, then you pull for your next favorite team (if any) in the playoffs, and finally, your CONFERENCE representative to win the Super Bowl. Same thing here. You don't shift to Arena football in your home town and expect to win the Super Bowl---it won't happen!! The impending loss we will encounter is NOT because we 'mimic' Republicans---no--they go mum, and sheepishly follow whomever their party (and media) heralds, no matter what their previous feelings were (maybe WE ought to learn something there). Case in point---Hannitys previous comments about McCain---now look at him; No, we will lose because (sorry) of people like you. You're (possibly not even aware of it) bitter, and inconsistent, and flailing helplessly against imaginary windmills---because things didn't break the way you hoped. You can't/won't win with Nader---and YOU KNOW IT! But it WILL serve the overall purpose of dividing us in the ranks---as a Vet---do you not understand the repercussions of this? Thus, this makes your decisions appear to be petulant, self-serving, and vinditive. By 'new progressives'--I'm assuming you mean--the 'followers' of Obama---"the cult"....those who don't see 'the known facts' about Obama--like you----what ARE those 'known facts'---his Pastors comments?? His so-called 'empty-headedness' you referred too? Because, so far, the only 'fact' you know about Obama..is he's labelled a Black man. The other fact is...the Democrats will lose because angry people like you will take their 'ball' and go home in November---because you don't like Obama---so do you like McCain?? Thats what you eventually will have to ask yourself. But YOU SURE SHOWED US!! And as a retired Vet---you can take solace in the FACT that our sons will be fighting in Iran five or fifty years from now and our daughters will be paying in sweat and tears a monstrous debt---not their own---because you're gonna show us you're "not so easily taken in by dreams, hopes and change." Maybe you ought to be....sad.

Neva, You're Right !

Obama is a made up thing. Why...Tell me why he would be a better president than Joe Biden. Obama is a creation of the mainstream media that Buzzflash readers otherwise critique (correctly).

Never underestimate the collective stupidity of America

PM, It is perfectly fine for Hagee to rail against anybody but his "chosen" few, but it is an abomination for Pastor Wright to look at the world situation and tell the Goddamn truth. As long as we perfectly align our interests and Israel's as one in the same, and as long as we support ruthless thugs and conspire to depose democratically elected leaders, we are going to get slapped from time to time. It's what happens to the arrogant who feel the need to project empire. Always has and always will. I'm beginning to hope for a financial Armageddon so that we may have to abandon our hubris, but more than likely we will turn even further toward the Fascist side and bully our way forward. It doesn't look good for our kids.

NO !

The specific and unaddressed reason that the spectacle of Jeremiah Wright's hate-filled psychotic display bears ZERO relation to Chalmers Johnson's sober analysis is that Wright made the statements ONLY HOURS! after the mass murder of over 3000 of his countrymen. Or DID he consider them, viscerally, to be his countrymen !? The contortions that some otherwise aware people have been going through in order to cosmeticize this disgusting display by Wright are an embarrassment to any concept of justice and to the notion of political progressivism. Jay Diamond

when?

When would it have been appropriate to speak the truth about these murders? After the propaganda had taken hold? Wright didn't blame those killed - he blamed the foreign policy of their country. And you're comparing the sermon of a preacher - someone whose purpose is to call people to action - and that of a scholarly work. I would suspect that the scholar agrees wholeheartedly with the preacher. The style may differ, the substance is the same.

Deja vu all over again

Have we not seen this act before, specifically in regard to the Swift Boating of John Kerry that required him to prove that he was not a liar and a coward? The current version is merely a modification of the basic plan: raise doubts about Obama's religious beliefs and national loyalty, so that he must continuously defend his patriotism and love of country. Hillary and her allies have studied the Karl Rove playbook and have learned much from it. I would very much like to see Obama ask Clinton a simple direct question: Do you believe that I love my country and that I am sincere in my desire to serve it in the best possible way? If she answers with an unequivocal "yes," then he should ask her, out of love of country and respect for the democratic process, to denounce all those who question his character and motives. Such a move puts him on a higher plain, one that does not engage in mud-slinging, and at the same time puts Hillary on the spot to reject all smear attacks upon Obama, even those that may emanate from her own camp. Of course, she will play the disingenuous innocence card, claiming that she has no control over and is not responsible for what people outside of her campaign might do or say (never mind Geraldine Ferraro). Still, the smear strategy will have been exposed and at least loosely tied to Hillary herself, which may make the public less susceptible to it.

De Ja Vu

Next you will be telling us that Hillary actually wrote the Rev. Wright's sermons. When will you guys grow up.

Interesting...

Robgo2-----I agree with your assessment that this is nothing more than swift-boat II updated and revised. However, I have a slightly different take on some aspects of it. One is...I have probably seared Hillary, at least, as hard as anyone else on here for what she has allowed to ooze like smelly slime from her campaign operatives. But, other than setting the stage, and allowing the soil to become fertile for these spurrilous 'attacks by association'; I frankly didn't see Hillary's hand in this one. If you could post some links regarding this---I'd appreciate seeing them. (I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to find out later that her campaign is all up in this). However, I've been tracking this story for a while now, and in my opinion, I saw Sean Hannity pushing this agenda for months now. He's been non-stop rabidly advocating this stupid line of reasoning; while all the time ignoring his own scandalous ties with Hal Turner, for example, who has advocated the ASSASSINATION of Barack Obama. While at the same time, he hasn't said a word about McCains ties to Hagee and others. By this reasoning, I should hold Chris Mathews in contempt ( and blame) for everything that spews from Pat Buchanans lips. After all...IT IS HIS show. To me, Obama could have put a serious dent in this whole media-driven hype in the very beginning, by simply saying, 'yes, I'm aware of wright's views and opinions----and they are HIS views. I have heard many statements and opinions from citizens, fellow colleagues, and even Hillary...that I vehemently disagree with, however, they have every right to state them. As a believer in the constitution---I stand by that." And then MOVE ON. Everytime its brought back up---he should say--'I've addressed that, what else do you have?' The sad truth is he's damned either way he goes. If he constantly keeps having to apologize for everything everyone says within a 50 foot radius of himself, he eventually winds up looking weak and capitulating; on the other hand, if he attacks the ignorance of this latest media madness... than it's "aha, as I suspected! he's an angry Black man--hiding the truth! I JUST KNEW IT!" The good thing is.....Hillary has set such a low bar of behavior and atmospheric swill that the republican (corporate)-run media is forced to bring out what few weapons they have at a relatively earlier stage than planned; and it shouldn't have any appreciable 'legs' left when he inevitably has to face McCain. (Who is just as equally unable to ply any usable material here). So,to me, if this is the only significant thing they could come up with, i.e.,to tar brush him with the words of someone else...simply on the basis of a close association...then its a good thing my friends are anonymous to readers here, because, to a degree,I feel as the good Reverent does.....America should check itself on its hypocritical(and blind) sense of patriotism and self-worth. It HAS become a terrorist state in many ways-----by any definition of the word.

The Right Thing and the Right Way

What the minister said is perfectly true. As noted,it is nothing that others like Chalmers Johnson haven't said. And it needs to be said over and over. But one must be careful that it is said in a way that will be heard for what it is rather than for something else. In a political context many people and most reporters often ignore meaning and jump on words to create sensation and hostility. I fear that people are what they are, but we could certainly use a better class of reporters.
Political statements must be made idiot proof before they can be safely uttered. Otherwise ones statements can hurt those we intend to help. It doesn't help to say "America" when we could say "the government" or "those misleading America." While it is true that we have never had a government that was not guilty of some of the wrongs addressed, it does no good to attack old history now. (We will not end slavery before Lincoln did, for example, and we will not end segregation before the 60s.) And in a political contest, "old" is anything before the administration we now know and hate.
The minister could learn something useful if he studied Jackie Robinson. Jackie won his fight by being careful not to start one.
Of course, Obama has to distance himself from such careless statements and hope that he will be understood.
A politician's friends are sometimes more harmful to him than his enemies. If his quest isn't defeated by such as this, perhaps Obama's presidency can bring an end to some of the worst divisions in our nation and between our nation and others.

The Truth is in there

One in 10 Americans is incarcerated -- more than any other country, including China and Russia. There's something wrong with that. And drugs ARE the problem. Let's be plain: rich white kids go to the Betty Ford Center, black kids go to jail. I'm still in awe of the fact that when we first went into Afghanistan, we could have bombed all the poppy fields out of existence and no one would have blinked. I still want to know why that was not done. (Frankly, I think we could still do it today and no one would blink.) What Wright said was indeed inflammatory -- the part about damning America, that is. That's sure to rile people, while taken in context, you see where he's coming from. The problem is, a whole lot of people in the country just don't see/understand where this kind of talk is coming from. (Nor do they care, sadly.) I know people who grew up in the South and are used to hearing black preachers talk. To them, Wright's words didn't register any uptick on the emotional scale. Those people get it. I was horrified when I heard Wright, not because of what he said, but because of the effect I knew it would have on Barack Obama. Yet I did notice something last night, and that is, some of the TV talking heads I was watching were not saying what I thought they might say. I think they know the subtext of all this, but they aren't saying it out loud. This is a problem for Obama, but it might not be a huge gargantuan problem. He just might be able to overcome it. I agree that because of what Wright said, the fact that an Obama presidency is what this country needs right now is underscored.

....IF you look for it!

CarrieAnnie----I agree. To paraphrase the old axiom---'I have seen the enemy--and it is us'. One of the real problems in America that bleeds into the body politick and everything else, is this CORE need to appeal to this imaginary class of people in America who at one time use to be called 'The Silent Majority'. Advertising, commercials, TV news, etc. all pander to this indefinable grouping. Its like some left-over vestige of 'Leave it to Beaver' and 'Father knows Best'---all gone wrong! Like 'American Beauty' on bad acid. You can tell by these postings that in REAL America, MANY white people feel exactly as black people---on a great majority of subjects. We all know that we're all rowing in the same boat---sometimes, in shark-infested waters; with some exceptions. Now its those 'exceptions' that are where the culprits lie. They are the transmitters and receivers of the same "reality". In this reality, THEY create the 'stories' of (in just the last month) Blacks vs. Latinos (see: Texas), Blacks vs. Women (see: Ferraro), Blacks vs. Whites (see: anything in media). In this reality, the media peddles pseudo-real images of McCain is a 'Maverick', Reagan was a sage visionary, Bush is really a nice-guy Texan (and REAL brush-clearing , gin-u-wine cowboy!!), Democrats are ineffective in leadership, Republicans are the party that'll protect you, Chuck Norris is a 'tough-guy', Romney is a 'CEO'President, Guiliani is 'America's Mayor',......and we had a 'War' on drugs. All designed to appeal SOLELY to the belief system of this select group---to the detriment of all the rest of America. This duality of realities has led to some of the disparate views we have now, especially along class, ethnic groups, and party lines. Hence, why some are/are not offended by Rev. Wright's comments. For example, your example of Afghanistan---why we didn't bomb the poppy fields there. As Noriega stated to his utter regret, 'if America was really serious about fighting a 'war' on drugs---then they would follow its path up to the gates of (Bush 1's) White House. ' Which promptly got him 'body-snatched' in his own country. An American act of terrorism. In one reality---this is very true--but to that singular, ever-important demographic group, America (by extension, read:CIA) would NEVER be involved in drug-trafficking. So now we know---the poppy fields of Afghanistan financed many of Americas inner-cities and out-of-country secret operations. So its ONLY because of their nostalgic feelings toward those same fields----that they decided to spare them the ravages of hell-fire missiles. Sure. If you're an inner-city Black living in Chicago, Detroit, NY or LA--America is seriously 'at war' with drugs. As long as American society keeps perpetually focusing ALL of its resources, wealth, opportunity, propaganda, attention, etc. on this singular group---there will always be this confusion (and anger) in the other groups outside this 'reality'. Unfortunately, thats why so many of the opinions, estimates, and evaluations one hears expressed over the airways by these empty-headed, talking faces are so remote from what most people see and know (for example, the president pretending and making claims that he 'wasn't aware of gas price increases'...and getting away with it)----is because many of them (black & white "journalists") hail from that same culturally bias, subliminally brainwashed, pseudo-Madison avenue-manufactured 'reality' demographic living somewhere between Pleasantville and Mayberry.

If you look for it

If it is all true and Obama believes his minister why then does he not run on that platform? Tell us that that is what he believes and then ask us to vote for him?

Gas Prices? Huh?

I only wish bush had made a comment like that four years ago. He might have been a one-termer, like his daddy, who'd never seen a supermarket scanner before. That damned little scanner, more than anything else, killed bush 1's chances at a second term. The saddest thing is that nothing else the man did made any difference until that scanner -- of all things -- made people realize that he really wasn't one of them after all.

Obama slithers away from Wright

Wow; what a bunch of highly cogent comments-I'm really impressed! I am very disappointed with Obama. Why does he go to this church for twenty years, then claim he had no idea what Wright was all about? I happen to think Wright is spot on. I guess Obama's just playing the politician, understandably concerned that Joe Sixpack (and Valerie Volvo, for that matter) just won't be able to handle the truth of our complicity in so many third world countries, as mentioned by various people. 911; same date as the US overthrew Allende and installed the delightful Pinochet. Probably a coincidence, but I'm not big on using coincidence as an answer.

Yes, why that church

Let's assume that this preacher hasn't suddenly in the last couple years developed dementia,i.e. he never said this kind of stuff before 9/11. Intellectually, I say to myself: Obama is sitting in this church listening to this guy preach. What's going on in Obama's head? He says there are a lot of things he likes about this church; so, when the preacher is on one of these rants, what's going on in Obama's head? Is he thinking: 'Can't wait for him to get through this stuff so we can get to the stuff that I like about this church.' I'm not slamming Obama (nor is my support for him wavering), I just know that this is something others will require him to answer. Require. And my own intellect is asking it, too, not because I'm ready to dump my support for him, but because I just want to know. I've tried, in my mind, to put myself in a similar position -- not the same position, because I'm not a black man, but a similar analagous situation, and it doesn't compute. I'm just trying to understand, along with my understanding that Wright makes valid points. And believe me, there are few places we could say that but inside here, and a few other progressive sites. My understanding of what the US has done in other countries comes from a different place. I grew up in an ethnic East European family (I'm first generation US). I distinctly remember listening to Nikita Kruschev on TV, his various speeches, including the one where he banged his shoe on the podium in the UN (yes, that far back, heheheh). I listened to what he was saying and what the TV translators were saying. They were translating him wrong! I recall telling my mother, "Mommy, that's not what he said!" She just nodded and gave me a look that I can't describe to you, but pretty much her look said, "Yeah, I know, it happens all the time." It's too far back for me to recall the details of what he really said versus what was translated, but my point here is that the American public rarely knows the whole truth, I think, and it goes back a long way. So from that place, I can listen to what Wright says, cut through the anger and hear what he's really saying. Average Joe Sixpack may or may not be able to do that. (I'm giving some credit that they might.)

A History Unreported

One thing we cannot expect the corporate media to do is to allow a full, in-depth airing of the points Reverend Wright espoused upon. Anyone who has the timerity to speak the truth about such things can expect to be called "crazy" and "unhinged" by the Tucker Carlsons and Sean Hannitys of the big TV media, regardless of your race or gender, but more especially if you happen to be black and passionate and speaking loudly and with conviction. But putting aside for a moment the issue of who and how the message was delivered, let's take the issue of blowback. The fact is we've been using our military as a proxy for American corporate interests for at least 100 years. We've been involved in the overthrow of no fewer than 13 democratically-elected foriegn governments, probably more (most in S. and Central America). In each case you can point to a vested US corporate interest that was being threatened by that government. How many Americans know that? It isn't in our school-books but a US general (Google Smedley Butler) gave speeches all over the country sounding the alarm about marine expeditionary forces being used for US corporate dirty work as far back as the 1930's. In essence, we've been operating as a mafia in foreign policy. We install a puppet dictator in said country (i.e. a "captain") who is given money and resources (i.e. "protection") to subjugate the masses in order for US business to use local slave labor to rape the local land of resources to enrich both the business and the US in general. A good percentage is always kicked back to the dictator, rinse, wash, repeat. When the masses inevitably rise up and revolt and burn American flags and fly planes into buildings (i.e. "blowback"), some rightwing simpleton will pop up on TV and on cue tell us all that "they" hate us for our freedoms and people who think like me are just "America haters." Actually I love America and what she was founded on, but I certainly do hate what a succession of administrations have been doing to foreign peoples in our name. No, these people don't hate us for our "freedoms." In fact, they'd just like a little of the same "freedom" we've got. We have to grow up. We haven't always been John Wayne and Gary Cooper. We're not always the good guys. Sometimes we're Jack Nicholsen. The question is--when will we as a country be able to first hear the truth, and then handle it. It looks like Rev. Wright passed that test long ago.

Follow-up

PGBowden---- Thanks a lot for this post. Well researched; better stated. I hope some of these people who are now questioning Obama's veracity and buying into all of this 'America right----no matter what' business take it under advisement. To the Hillary backers: don't act like this is some 'revelation'. I could make a VERY LONG post of questionable comments from her husband and associates (with video), but in truth, I have never judged her by anything other than her own deeds and statements-----it would behoove you to give Obama as much.

Not Jack Nicholson - Dirty Harry

I agree with your thoughts here - except I don't think we're ever Jack Nicholson as his characters are too self-aware to personify the U.S. Right now, we're closer to Clint Eastwood - Dirty Harry, to be precise, (the post-modern American action hero, the cop who plays by his own rules - he's too busy fighting bad guys to deal with pesky laws!) In my opinion the U.S. should make a choice to either: A) Be who we SAY we are; or B) Just be who we are, and say THAT. Sadly, I think if an open national discussion were had regarding our REAL foreign policy, I believe a large number of Americans (your Hannities & O'Reilly's) would elect for option B, i.e., take off the mask and just be proud to be Romans! Might is right! Take it because we can - social Darwinism. While I would much prefer option A, i.e., trying to live up to our transcendent ideals, I'd prefer B to the status quo - at least we wouldn't be such monumental hypocrites.

Agreed

You're exactly right--the US IS Dirty Harry. Wish I'd thought of it myself. My Jack analogy was actually in reference to his character in "A Few Good Men," but I think your analogy is more fitting.

A video lynching by association

ABC News "investigative" reporter Brian Ross' so-called exposé of the now retired Rev. Jeremiah Wright's sermons was little more than an attempted video lynching of Barack Obama by association.

Senator Clinton's most hardcore, ardent supporters of should have decried this smear-by-association of Senator Obama, yet they remain silent.

After Seantor Clinton's whine that the mainstream media was tougher on her than on Senator Obama, that same mainstream media is now busily painting her Democratic primary opponent as an unelectable "black" candidate, more Jesse Jackson than Andrew Jackson.

Pastor Wright - Barack Obama

Considering that Hillary Clinton has lived her lifetime with Bill Clinton and he lied -does that make her a liar (Guilt by association). The silence coming from her campaign is deafening - I find it interesting that John McCain steers people to the Wall Street Journal. Sean Hannity + Karl Rove = Fox News = Rupert Murdoch = Wall Street Journal (Wasn't it last year that Rupert Murdoch supported Hillary Clinton). Also Bill Clinton was on Rush Limbaugh's show the day he was re-directing Republicans to vote for Hillary Clinton - also tonight Bill Clinton is giving Fox News an interview. SOMETHING STINKS. If you people denounce and crucify Barack Obama for statements made by someone else - you will in fact be confirming Pastor Wright's statement.

clinton's problem

Yes, it's obvious to all that this is Clinton's problem. Why?, you ask. JUST BECAUSE! nuff said Bill from CT

He doesn't mean it...

"nuff said Bill from CT"

I wish that would be true, but I seriously doubt he means it.

Let's insert McCain in exchange for Clinton

"Senator McCain's most hardcore, ardent supporters of should have decried this smear-by-association of Senator Obama, yet they remain silent.

"After Seantor McCain's whine that the mainstream media was tougher on her than on Senator Obama, that same mainstream media is now busily painting her Democratic primary opponent as an unelectable "black" candidate, more Jesse Jackson than Andrew Jackson."

It comes out the same.

It boils down to this: The corportocracy (Wall Street's major investors, the media moguls, the upper one percent elite in general) intended, and yet intend, this election to be between a Tweedle-Dee Democrat and a Tweedle-Dum Republican. Obama may not be as "progressive," "liberal" or "radical" as some of would like, but both John McCain and Hillary Clinton walk closer to that mythical "centerist" line which the corportocracy wishes us all to toe.

Dead Wright!

While I was disappointed that nobody talked about what Wright actual said - least of all Obama - I wasn't surprised. The American press plays "gotcha!" because it makes better TV than actually informing people. It's also a boat load cheaper than the labor it takes to do real research and reporting. The videos of Wright are sliced and diced and nobody bothers to ask what else was said or who did the editing? It's crazy - unless you look at it through the lens of TV production - it's simple - it's cheap - and people will watch it - much like a car chase. Because of this shallowness in coverage, it's virtually impossible to address these sorts of things on the merits. So, Obama has to come out and "reject and condemn" any statements that SOUND inflammatory because that's as deep as the coverage will go. To do anything else is political suicide. Of course, race is a factor here - as it always is with a black man, particularly an angry black man. The only mention I heard of any context to Wright's sermons was a FALSE comparison to what Pat Robertson said on the 700 Club - that 9/11 was God's punishment of gays and secularism - which is a really stupid theological argument while Wright's was a salient political one. The irony is that I think the comparison was made in an effort to set the statements aside as 'just another crazy christian,' which Wright is clearly not. As a Christian myself, I believe Jesus would wrap his arms around the Reverend Wright and thank him for speaking so powerfully in His name and Cause.

Very Helpful Analysis

P.M. Carpenter, thank your for putting the dispute over Rev. Jeremiah Wright's statements into clearer perspective.

I'm dismayed (yet again, always again) over the news media's failure to speak truth to power. The news media's failure is often caused by their fear of the empowered, whose invariable first line of defense is to shoot the messenger.

Rev. Jeremiah Wright's message of course sent the neo-cons running for their six-guns. The craven news media only had the guts to deliver the Reverend's message in the safety of a torch and rope-carrying mob.

Some of us are old enough to remember how the mainstream media treated young Mohamed Ali's "un-American" statements, when he became a Black Muslim and courageously condemned America's racism and war in Vietnam. Now of course, he's an American hero and icon. I predict, in the future - when it will require much less courage - the news media will treat Rev. Wright's statements more fairly.

Muslim No More!

Interesting! The media has stopped floating the "he's a Muslim" in words and photos. Now they are floating "he's a black Christian." In words and video. Will they ever make up their collective minds?

Jews still waiting

Hey, I'm waiting until I can call Obama a "landsman."

I'm especially waiting for November 5th, when I can wish him "Mazeltov!"
