P.M. Carpenter
THE FIFTH COLUMNIST by P.M. Carpenter

And thereupon graced the stage a woman whose very name 99 out of 100 delegates would not have known just one week ago, yet she was greeted by thunderously supportive hoots, hollers and hosannas as if she was the Resurrection, the Light and the Way; perhaps Ronald Reagan, Teddy Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln, all in one. There is -- no kidding -- a metaphysical and in this case eponymous term, palingenesis, meaning, literally, from the Greek, another beginning, one in which one's soul slips right into another's physical form. Last night I think we witnessed just that. It must be feeling pretty crowded in there for Sarah Palin right now, given that Spiro Agnew -- and not, as so many on the convention floor thought, Reagan or Roosevelt or Lincoln -

September 4, 2008 The BuzzFlash Editor's Blog You might say a key founding principle of BuzzFlash back in May of 2000 is that the Republican Party is a club of hypocrites. They will say and applaud any change of position based on whether you are inside or outside the club. If you are inside of the club, all indiscretions or disastrous records of service are forgiven. If you are outside the club, all indiscretions and disastrous records of service prove that you are a socialist, immoral heathen. Technorati Tags: EditorBlog McCain Palin GOP Hypocrisy

Her hubby's secession group (fringe-y, pissed) Should be on a Homeland Security watch list. Sarah said she didn't know what a VP did. Her "Bridge To Nowhere" support she hid. When Alaska Governor Sarah Palin was about to give her speech Wednesday night in St. Paul, Turner Classic Movies was about 15 minutes into "The Candidate" starring Robert Redford.
Now, TCM has no idea who John McCain would have picked for a running mate, but the channel did schedule the movie for when the Republican VP candidate would speak. Perhaps the channel's marketing people had ESP.
When Gov. Palin was finished with her speech, she looked all alone on a drab set, the huge video flag flying behind her. Nobody rushed on to meet her right away. No family, no supporters, nothing. The moment looked awkward. Waving, smiling, not knowing what was happening next. I almost wondered if she was asking herself: "What do we do now?" - the now famous line from the movie.

As a lifelong Secular Humanist of the Jewish persuasion, it is very difficult for me to admit to the title of this Commentary, but I have finally become convinced of its truth. The events of the last few days have been the culmination of a series of them that began with the election of George W. Bush. And so, there is simply no way around the recognition of the fact. I just want to briefly share my thought process and reasoning with you.

Analysis
A BUZZFLASH NEWS ANALYSIS by Christine Bowman This year the GOP rolled out its new product in early September, and Alaska Governor Sarah Palin was just what conventioneers needed to enliven their otherwise lackluster nominating convention in Minnesota. Maybe it's the case that "A star is born," as at least one pundit declared hopefully Wednesday night, but it seems more to this writer that a role player stepped onto the court. Reader Contribution
A BUZZFLASH READER CONTRIBUTION by Joel Badeaux Submitted September 3, 2008 How John McCain could pick Sarah Palin for Vice President is beyond belief. Besides the fact that she is just about the least qualified pick ever and has no foreign policy experience at all, her views on the issues are the most extreme for anybody ever considered for the Vice Presidency (yes, even worse than Cheney, who believes in gay rights). She is against abortion even in the case of rape and incest -- and, yet, she claims to believe in freedom and acts like she is taking up the mantle from Hillary and Geraldine Ferraro on women's rights? Barbara's Daily Buzz
BARBARA'S DAILY BUZZFLASH MINUTE Seeing it in black and white, rather than out of the mouths of spin-misters and bobble head pundits, Sarah Palin’s portfolio is startlingly revealing: “Last year, Palin requested more earmarks per person than any other state -- including some that were criticized by McCain himself … as mayor of Wasilla, Palin's pursuit of earmarks was aggressive … though Palin touted her opposition to the ‘Bridge to Nowhere’ … she initially supported the project … Palin was endorsed by now-indicted Sen. Ted Stevens … The friendly relationship between the embattled senator … and the supposedly maverick governor is at odds with Palin's claim to dismantling the "old boys club" of Alaska government … Palin reportedly fired the police chief and attempted to fire the librarian, because she did not feel that she had their ‘full support …’ Former city officials allege that the attempts to remove the librarian were a result of her her refusal to censor books at Palin's request … Palin has been at the center of the Trooper-Gate scandal that alleges misuse of her gubernatorial power … Palin fired the Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan. Monegan later claimed his firing was a result of his refusal to fire Palin's former brother-in-law and trooper Mike Wooten. Palin denied that she, her husband or her staff ever pressured Monegan, a statement she later had to retract when recorded phone calls revealed one of her aides, Frank Bailey, had called a troopers office pushing for Wooten's removal ... the Washington Post published emails from Palin to Monegan in which she appeared to complain that Wooten was still employed, apparently undercutting her claim that she discussed Wooten with Monegan only in the context of the security of her family. She certainly has the Bush Repuglican standards of operating procedure in place, “Palin has claimed executive privilege on over a thousand emails between her and her staff including Bailey.” There is nothing here that even suggests she’s qualified for VP of the U.S.A.!!! You get to play Solomon: it's opening night of the NFL season with teams from the number one media market vs. a team from the nation's capital, and your network is broadcasting the game.
But it's also the night where the Republican presidential nominee makes his acceptance speech.
At 10 p.m. Eastern, when the game will likely still go on, what do you do? Cut away from the game? Go picture-in-picture? Join the speech in progress? Shift the speech to your cable news channel and show the speech in its entirety after the game?

Now that we've had a chance to see Sarah Palin and to hear her speak -- or at least read the big rolling white block letters on the teleprompter in front of her -- we can see that she's prone to telling whoppers. Now we know politicians as a group have a propensity to embellish the truth -- particularly when describing their opponents or themselves -- and even to lie outright, but Palin does it so well, she's like a George Bush with reading and pronunciation skills. MS. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON BuzzFlash, America and we Americans matter. Size matters, the US has one of the largest economies in the world (well, these figures come from 2000, before the Bush GOP had a run with this government), and as we all know today, we now have the "largest debt" ever in US history, and Bush and his minions sold us to China. Yes, the size of US debt matters. We are living on borrowed money, and maybe borrowed time. Ask Americans how that feels. Due to loss of jobs, and salary cuts, many Americans are having to supplement their incomes with borrowed money. Many have lost their homes. Still, more have lost their lives, and all they wanted was a good education. A good education today can cost as much as $50,000 a year. Who will get the good education at those prices? Not the majority of Americans. Technorati Tags: Shirley Smith McCain GOP Corruption Military War Crime Guns
