HUGH HEWITT Among right wing whacko radio talk show hosts, Hugh Hewitt is known as a “Christianist,” according to Andrew Sullivan. As far as we can detect, that means Hewitt thinks that he is holier than thou. We doubt whether Christ has weighed in on Hewitt’s self-proclaimed religiosity. P.M. Carpenter
THE FIFTH COLUMNIST by P.M. Carpenter

"Somebody asked, 'What’s the strategy behind this?'" said Charlie Black of John McCain's peculiar foreign travels in the midst of his unmistakable domestic meltdown. "It’s simple," answered Black. "McCain says he wants to go to these places, and we say, of course." There are some politicians whom advisers should never permit to run their own campaigns, and John McCain is one of them. Watching him, I get the sense, at times, that he still sees himself as the macho, hotshot naval cadet whose picaresque adventures inst

Guest Contribution
A BUZZFLASH GUEST CONTRIBUTION by Michael Winship At the beginning of the week, a friend sent me a scurrilous, anonymous e-mail attacking Barack Obama that has been circulating around her elderly cousin's senior living community in New Jersey. Headlined "Something to Think About," it lists 13 acts of assassination, kidnapping, war and terrorism, all of which, it notes, were committed "by Muslim male extremists between the ages of 17 and 40."

FINDING A VOICE by Ann Davidow

Does this election cycle hold the promise of meaningful change in a country suffering from the effects of a government that has failed on every conceivable level? Not if things continue on their current course in which the game of ‘gotcha' politics has such great media-appeal. As Democratic strategist, Chris Kofinis put it, when you don't have any really good ideas you resort to the "politics of mass distraction." Thus, the McCain camp keeps referring to Obama's decision opting out of public financing as a character flaw, for exam

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT by Meg White The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) get residents out of government-issued temporary housing units as soon as possible. The CDC cited environmental hazards as the reason, telling FEMA to start moving high-risk populations such as children, asthmatics, and the elderly as soon as possible. Victims of Hurricane Katrina residing in trailers and mobile homes issued almost three years ago by FEMA could already be developing serious health problems due to their living arrangements, according to the CDC study. The CDC released a report Wednesday saying formaldehyde levels in FEMA trailers and mobile homes serving the Gulf Coast regions are higher than in average homes in the U.S. Formaldehyde is the gaseous form of a chemical used in many building materials and has been shown to cause cancer and respiratory problems. A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT by Meg White Memo to McDonald's managers: Take your phone off the hook. The American Family Association (AFA) is not pleased with the home of the Happy Meal. The AFA, a conservative 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that promotes conservative Christian values, called for a boycott of McDonald's restaurants because the corporation refuses to renounce its membership in the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC). The AFA also told its supporters to call their local McDonald's restaurants to complain. Technorati Tags: Alerts diversity McDonald's anti-gay

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT by Amy Weiss
Department of Defense (DoD) Inspector General Claude "Mick" Kicklighter resigned this week after only a year in the position and accepted a position at George Mason University School of Law as director of the Critical Infrastructure Protection Program.
A press release from the university quoted Kicklighter saying, "I'm quite honored to be joining Mason and the Critical Infrastructure Protection Program ... The program has a great mission that is vital to the security of our nation"- which almost begs the question: How was your last job, maintaining oversight for the Department of Defense, not a "great mission" or "vital to the security of our nation?"

Be-Elected
BE ELECTED by Meg White It's a long weekend, thanks to a politically-themed holiday, and Congress is out of session. News is slow...time to speculate! Of course, everyone's favorite topic is the choice for Sen. Barack Obama's running mate. There are too many names to list them all, so I'll tell you about my favorite: New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson. He's got both executive and foreign policy experience, he's likable, he's Hispanic...need I say more? Apparently, yes. Technorati Tags: Be-Elected Richardson Obama vice president

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT by Amy Weiss
While many in the media and the political sphere are still discussing Obama's choice not to accept public financing, the Wall Street Journal published a report Thursday about the questionable tactics Republicans are using.
The Republican Governors Association (RGA), a 527 with no donation limits, is soliciting contributions under the pretense that it can even the financial playing field for John McCain's presidential race, since McCain decided to accept public funding and can only spend $84.1 million in the general election.
The Journal quotes RGA executive director Nick Ayers as saying, "We are the equalizer in this campaign."

Dave Lindorff
by Dave Lindorff I'm certainly no hero, but since some readers of my last post have reacted by attacking my courage and integrity on the grounds that I "never served," I want to at least set the record straight on my youthful response to war. In 1967, when I was a senior in high school in Storrs, CT., I faced a momentous decision. In April, I would turn 18, and would have to register for the draft. The Vietnam War was by then in full swing. A year or two earlier, I'd been an avid fan of military aviation magazines, and bought into the whole anti-Communist Cold War thing. But by '67, I had seen enough of the violence being done in Vietnam against a desperately poor peasant population -- the napalm attacks on civilians, the burned babies, etc.- -- that I had done a 180-degree turn. I wanted nothing to do with war and killing. So like many young men of my generation I made a decision: I would fill out my registration at the draft board, and I'd get my draft card, but I would not let myself be inducted into the military.
