P.M. Carpenter
THE FIFTH COLUMNIST by P.M. Carpenter

If nothing else, at least the carpet-bombing coverage of the Obama-Wright (I'm not even sure what to call it; it's no longer a story and it's never been a scandal) ... main event? ... has silenced the partisan multitudes who once noisily proclaimed that all the media cards were unfairly stacked against their candidate. That, so their woeful story went, was the chief if not singular cause of their candidate's diminishing fortunes. All other reasonable, thoughtful explanations -- e.g., the Clin

map from this Web site There is something to be said for getting out among the masses to see for ourselves the fun and madness of this Democratic Party presidential battle royale. We offered to go to the caucuses in Hawai'i in February, got turned down. Perhaps the Guam caucus on Saturday, we thought.
When going through the BuzzFlash travel budget, we realized that it was about as empty as Pooh's pot of honey.
But I am going to go to Indiana to see what I can see this weekend. If Obama or Clinton is speaking north of Indianapolis, I will try to be there. Otherwise, there are no set plans other than to see what I can see and talk to real Hoosiers. When choosing between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, we keep hearing "electability" and voters should pick "who can beat John McCain." And this isn't from some random blog; this is from DNC Chair Howard Dean: "I think the race is going to come down to the perception in the last six or eight races of who the best opponent for McCain will be. I do not think in the long run it will come down to the popular vote or anything else."
This is the shallow thinking that gets Democrats in trouble. Technorati Tags: Be-Elected Chad Rubel 2008 race Barack Obama Hillary Clinton Howard Dean electability

A BUZZFLASH READER CONTRIBUTION by Leigh Saavedra
Are the voters in Indiana and North Carolina going to fall for the newest political "trick," the one where Senators Clinton and McCain join hands and offer us a three-month break in the federal gas tax? We hope not and should spread fuller information about it to our friends.
These two senators insult our intelligence by waving it in our faces, like a piece of cheap candy to win a child's affection. The tax is 18.4 cents a gallon and the savings for each of us is estimated to be $30. The cost to the government is 18.5 BILLION dollars. And what we need to remember with a little more ferocity is that when anything COSTS the government, who is in deep debt, it means borrowing it, probably from China, and leaving the debt for our children to worry over. All so each of us can head to the beach this summer with a spare 30 dollars? I recall the horrifying root of our economic woes: we continue to borrow from the Chinese so that we can send money to Saudi Arabia (home of most of the 9-11 terrorists, a fact some still get confused over).

Analysis
A BUZZFLASH NEWS ANALYSIS by Chad Rubel One element of Hillary Clinton's run for president of the United States is the country asking itself whether it was comfortable with having a woman be the leader of the country. However Sen. Clinton's run may finish, she has done a great job at convincing Americans that a woman can be in charge.
Not that it should have been a struggle. Canada, Great Britain, Israel, Germany, and countless other countries have had women in charge without issue. We currently have a female Speaker of the House, countless U.S. representatives and senators, state governors and much, much more.
So in terms of women in power, we've come a long way (baby). But in other areas, we still find ourselves a little perplexed.

Back in late 2006, it was widely reported in the Latin American media that President Bush, or perhaps his old man, had bought a 100,000-acre farm in a remote area of Paraguay. What struck people at the time was the choice of country. Paraguay, of course, has gained a certain Club Med status among the world's villains and criminal elements as the place to go when the law's on your tail. The country, ruled for six decades by the dictatorial and fascist Colorado Party of Gen. Alfredo Stroesser, an almost cartoon caricature of a Latin American dictator, has no extradition treaty with any nation. Technorati Tags: Dave Lindorff George W.
