THE FIFTH COLUMNIST by P.M. Carpenter

There is understatement, and then there's understatement. For the latter, see Pat Waak, chairwoman of the Colorado Democratic Party, who recently told The New York Times: "I think nationally and here, people are kind of tired of the way [the Bush] administration has been conducting the policies of this country." Yeah, we're just kind of tired of it. A bit fatigued. A trifle melancholy at a little unattractive behavior in pursuit of a few rather unappealing policies. Now why, you ask, was the Times quoting Ms. Waak in her somewhat stoic, Zen-like appraisal of the last eight years? Because the paper, you see, was engaged in asking various party poobahs and tuned-in academic

BUZZFLASH MEDIA PUTZ OF THE WEEK
August 6, 2008 CBS owned-and-operated WBZ-TV Channel 4 Boston, MA For reporting that is an embarrassment to the profession of journalism, and for being beholden to corporate paymasters rather than the citizens of America. On its Web site, Boston station WBZ-TV posted an article about four Iowans who attempted to arrest Karl Rove when he appeared at a Republican Party fundraiser at a country club in Des Moines. The station reported the story in its "On The Lighter Side" section. We thought that must be because they think war crimes are uproariously funny. Barbara's Daily Buzz
BARBARA'S DAILY BUZZFLASH MINUTE Hmm, the people who are vehemently denying the information contained in Ron Suskind’s new book are the same group who said, “Mushroom clouds”, “Weapons of Mass Destruction”, “Iraq is an imminent threat”, “yellow-cake in Niger”, “Hussein would ‘fairly soon’ have nuclear weapons”, “Hussein would seek domination of the entire Middle East, take control of a great portion of the world’s energy supplies, directly threaten America’s friends throughout the region and subject the U.S. or any other nation to nuclear blackmail.” When will Americans wake up to the fact that George Bush, Dick Cheney, John McCain, and their minions, the entire Repuglican Party will LIE in order to achieve their goals and/or cover their a**es? There is the big giant presidential race: Obama and McCain, plus Barr, McKinney, and Nader among others.
But as true political junkies, there are some great House and Senate races to consider in this cycle. And so many questions to consider. Will Republicans win back House seats they lost due to scandal (e.g., Mark Foley) in 2006? Will Obama be that much of a boost to House and Senate races for the Democrats? Can the Democrats reach 60 in the Senate?
For today, we'll focus on the Senate (the House will be the subject tomorrow). For the Senate, the national focus has been on Minnesota, mostly because of Al Franken: did you know he used to be on television? But there are plenty of other races to watch. Here's a list of the Senate seats up for grabs:

Reader Contribution
A BUZZFLASH READER CONTRIBUTION by Kirk Muse The Republican Party would be a small minority party if they only garnered votes from those who benefit from their policies. That's probably about 3 percent of the voters.
If John McCain wins in November, it will not because most voters like or trust him, but rather because he has convinced voters to not trust Barack Obama. He is using the Republican strategy of attack, attack, and attack more. And it is working.
The voters in 1988 did not vote for George H. W. Bush -- they voted against Michael Dukakis. The Willie Horton ads and the revolving door ads were very effective. Not based upon the truth, but very effective.
Voters in 2004 did not vote to re-elect George W. Bush -- they voted against John Kerry. The "Swift Boat" ads were very effective. Not based upon the truth, but very effective.
The strategy of attack, attack, and attack some more is very effective, especially if it comes from an organization not directly associated with the candidate or his or her campaign. Like the so-called "Swift Boat Veterans."

Alerts
A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT by Amy Weiss Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) said in a conference call Wednesday that Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) showed in 2003 "how active he can be on behalf of his lobbyist friends" and he wishes "he'd show half the effort now" in trying to save 8,200 jobs at a DHL hub in Wilmington, Ohio. McCain and his campaign manager, Rick Davis, worked "aggressively" to push forward the deal that gave the shipping company control of the facility in 2003, when Davis was a lobbyist.
DHL parent company, German-based Deutsche Post, was a client of Davis in 2003. Davis lobbied the Senate on its behalf to help push through a deal for DHL to buy the Wilmington facility that was owned by Airborne Express, despite concerns from some, including Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK), about DHL's foreign ownership. McCain successfully fought legislative roadblocks to the deal.

BE ELECTED by Meg White
I have to admit, I was a little skeptical about Sen. John McCain's dedication to environmentalism. But after seeing his new ad, "Family," I can't deny his commitment to recycling. As I reported last week, there was a great deal of attention paid to McCain's controversial and negative campaign ad called "Celebrity." With all that free press coverage, I'm not surprised he tried to recreate last week's success with a similar ad released today. The latest Rasmussen Poll really missed its mark. They were trying to get to the bottom of the recent argument between the Republican and Democratic nominees' assertions that each is responsible for injecting race into the presidential debate. Technorati Tags: Analysis

Analysis
A BUZZFLASH NEWS ANALYSIS by Christine Bowman To some extent, it's now dawning on John McCain that America must take action on energy. But why has it taken him 30-some years, and why is he still only looking at the production side?
John McCain's new proposals on energy include calls for opening up additional offshore drilling leases and a push to build 45 new nuclear reactors by 2030 -- and ultimately 100 or so new reactors over a longer time frame, thus roughly doubling the current nuclear reactor count. McCain hasn't specified where the new reactors would go. Doing so might well be expected to spark disadvantageous election-season disapproval in affected regions. [Existing reactors are mapped out here]. Nor has McCain explained who would pay for the new power plants. As The New York Times reported in June, 2008: [Most environmentalists say ...] that no utility will put its own financing into building a plant unless the federal government lavishly subsidizes it. In the category of yawn-inducing stories that we knew all about before they happened, comes word that the jury of senior uniformed officers sitting in judgment of Osama Bin Laden's chauffeur in the first Bush-league military tribunal to actually go to a hearing at Guantanamo Naval Station found the prisoner, Salim Hamdan... Drum roll please... Guilty of supporting terrorism. I pause here for gasps of astonishment. It's awfully silent... Subject: Finding Out Who Done It It's a case of the foxes not only guarding the hen house but being put in charge of investigating the brutal murder of five hens by unidentified vicious carnivor(s) soon after 9/11. The case eventually was closed but only after an old hound dog happened to be run over by a car in front of the hen house. The deceased had a record of having been seen growling and barking across the street from the scene of the crime. Apparently this was the breakthrough that the Foxes Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had been waiting for, because it immediately declared CASE CLOSED. Noteworthy is the fact that not once during the investigation did the FBI look to its own for the possible culprit(s), which is strange since it is well known that nothing tastes better to a fox than a hen.
