FINDING A VOICE by Ann Davidow

This campaign season has been a time of awakening for Republicans. They have come to realize we are facing an energy crisis. Many of them even agree that global warming is a real phenomenon and that climate change threatens the stability of land masses and the health of the planet. Mostly, though, they have discovered a great new campaign issue. Diehards like Republican Senator Inhofe still call global warming a hoax. That point of view makes the pursuit of in-country fossil fuel sources the best way to alleviate our dependence on foreign oil and to igno

THE FIFTH COLUMNIST by P.M. Carpenter

Presidential-matchup polls have descended on us like Cecil DeMille's locusts since early June, and they have, from time to time, contained their share of idiosyncratic surprises: Obama up by double digits here, McCain then up by a point or two there.
But, in the main, they've offered some rather unextraordinary calls: It's Obama on the inside with a monotonous three-to-six point advantage. The only authentic amusement that comes with their successive release is the cable-network cluster of "This could change" punditry.
Yesterday, however, there finally came a poll that was authentically eyepopping as well. It was The Washington P

Barbara's Daily Buzz
BARBARA'S DAILY BUZZFLASH MINUTE “One way or the other, homeowners may wind up paying higher property taxes because of the state's fiscal crisis. Gov. Sonny Perdue late last week placed a hold on the $428 million homeowners tax relief grant program and cut spending for schools and other programs. The two moves were part of the plan Perdue and legislative leaders developed to deal with a possible $1.6 billion shortfall brought on by the slow economy.” And you thought George Bush gave you a tax-cut, well think again, thanks to George Bush’s monumental tax-cuts for the richest among us to include Bush himself, the same tax-cuts John McCain wants to make permanent, are coming full circle back around to hit us all in the rear-end! Don’t say we weren’t warned, Democrats nationwide predicted exactly what would happen now, way back then! We’re all facing tax increases on the very things we hold so near and dear in our hearts, our property, our homes, our American dreams are coming under the tax-assessor's pen in order to turn state’s red ink into black! It’s all coming together at a time when most Americans can least afford to spend another penny, a time when foreclosure looms in the future for a whole lot of Americans, a time when property values have sunk to rock bottom, a time when a sale, if you can get it, cannot recoup equity! A dire time of recession bordering on depression, depending on whether you have a job or not!!! Yessirre bobtail, we were told what George Bush’s tax cuts would do to our economy, and if you believe John McCain’s drivel of putting more money into corporations who have already shipped your jobs overseas then you are as dumb as dirt! That money is just Repuglican payola for Repuglican support, for Repuglican votes, it will do nothing for 98% of the American people! And it ain’t just in Georgia, have a look-see at what’s happening in Cali-forn-ia, check out the rest of the country and you’ll see the disaster George Bush created in every corner, every nook and cranny throughout America!!! Will you be more impressed if you can predict when the VP will be picked more so than who that is?
Bil Browning thinks Obama will name Sen. Evan Bayh on Wednesday. Speaker Nancy Pelosi pulls out Chet Edwards as a long-shot prospect.
This is beginning to look like a game of Clue: "Obama will pick Sen. Russ Feingold on August 22 in the conservatory." Even Obama's VP staff is waiting to see who he picks. The only recent pick that went this late was in 1988, when George H.W. Bush named Dan Quayle on August 16. Imagine being a Republican and waiting with excitement, and finding out it's Quayle. Learning that Santa Claus didn't exist was an easier time for them. I've grown more tired about who Obama and McCain will pick and wonder when they will pick. There is a window this week before the opening ceremonies of the Summer Olympics in Beijing on Friday. After the Olympics, there is a narrow crack of a window, if that, before the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

WINGS OF JUSTICE Greg McKendry
When a crazed killer walked into the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church last week, he first had to contend with usher Greg McKendry. McKendry, a 60-year-old man described by fellow church members as a "very large gentleman," a "refrigerator," and looking "like a football player," used his size to block the shotgun blasts being fired at the congregation. His compassion loomed large, too. For his effort to save others, which led to his unfortunate murder, we award him this week's Wings of Justice award. A BUZZFLASH NEWS ANALYSIS by Amy Weiss A reporter for the Tallahassee Democrat suspects he was removed from a John McCain event last week in Panama City, Florida because he is black. A statement from a McCain campaign "advance man" claimed that race was not involved.
The reporter, Stephen Price, was approached by a member of McCain's security detail and asked for his press credentials. Price presented them and was asked if he was a national reporter. He told the man he was a state reporter and then was approached by a police officer with his hand on his holster and told to leave the area. No one else was asked to leave until another reporter asked why Price had been removed, then she, too, was asked to leave.

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ANALYSIS by Meg White
Update 5:00 p.m. CDT: McDonald's Corp. got back to us two hours after our stated deadline. Danya Proud, spokesperson for McDonald's USA, said that while there is no corporate policy that she knows of regarding in-restaurant television programming, the company does "require all of its restaurants to show appropriate content," which she defined as news and/or McDonald's-generated programming such as advertising. Proud also said that there could be a regional or franchisee-specific policy regarding programming, which she would look into for me, so stay tuned for updates!
Rumors began circulating around several news Web sites and blogs yesterday that McDonald's has a policy to exclusively play FOX News on its in-restaurant televisions. Apparently, someone who called in to a program on C-SPAN said he had gone to a McDonald's in Missouri and asked them to change the channel from FOX to something else. Workers there refused, saying they weren't allowed to change the channel due to corporate policy. The caller said he then spoke with a regional director. An e-mail written by a C-SPAN watcher who goes by "Libby" said that the caller said that the regional director told him the policy was due to "bad things on other channels." What does John McCain want to accomplish? What vision does he have for this country's future? Where does he want this country to be 4 years from now? There are usually 4 themes in a presidential race: why Candidate A should be president, why Candidate A shouldn't be president, why Candidate B should be president, and why Candidate B shouldn't be president. But in the 2008 race, we are missing one of those themes: why Candidate B (John McCain) should be president. We have seen McCain's advertising: he promotes Obama as popular and charming, the ads look like they promote Obama with the sound turned down, and yet the question becomes "Is he ready to lead?" You could construe a "positive" message in there that says, "John McCain is ready to lead." But it's never said or even inferred. Based on McCain's numerous misstatements, one candidate looks ready and it isn't McCain. Technorati Tags: Be-Elected Chad Rubel 2008 race Barack Obama John McCain negative campaigning president

I have a 2001 Honda Civic CX. Just like most Americans, I have for years been racing that car around ignoring speed limits, accelerating out of intersections, racing ahead at light changes as if I were coming out of starting blocks, ignoring things such as checking my tire pressure. Two weeks ago, though, I read about eco-driving, and thought I'd give it a try. I filled up the tank, took a lot of crap out of the trunk that I'd been lugging around for no good reason, set the air pressure at the manufacturer's specs, changed the air filter (it was pretty clogged), changed the oil to fully synthetic, and started driving conservatively. I stuck to the posted speed limits on local and highway, used my cruise control wherever possible to avoid needless accelerations, kept a good distance behind other vehicles to avoid unnecessary braking, avoided fast accelerations, turned off the engine altogether when stopped at a light or in traffic jams, and gave myself plenty of time to get to appointments. The result: My mileage leapt from 27 mpg to 38.5 mpg! For the math challenged, that's a 42% improvement in gas mileage! Technorati Tags: Dave Lindorff gas tire gauge gas prices
