Obama's Fortuitous Enemies

THE FIFTH COLUMNIST by P.M. Carpenter

"By almost every measure," Dan Balz of the Washington Post wrote, "Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's overseas tour that concluded here [in London] Saturday was a clear success.... What isn't measurable is whether it worked. Will a week ... overcome the doubts he faces at home about his readiness to be president? And if it doesn't, what will?"

But just as Mr. Balz was asking, Gallup was answering -- at least in the limited way that any polling organization is able to answer. Sunday it released a fresh tracking poll that showed a nine-poin

Why couldn't Jon Stewart say the 'I' word to Speaker Nancy Pelosi?

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ANALYSIS
by Chad Rubel

Yes, Jon Stewart is not a journalist. And Stewart talks about the "fake news" on "The Daily Show." But in the many segments on his own program, Stewart should realize that the MSM will simply not ask the questions the American public wants to hear.

So Stewart had Speaker Nancy Pelosi on the show last night. Pelosi is promoting her own book "Know Your Power: A Message to America's Daughters," but certainly Stewart had opportunities to ask Pelosi about other issues. And he did. Stewart asked about Congress' success rate, and what might happen to Congress if Obama wins in November.

There was one question missing on the docket in the interview. All Stewart had to ask was this: "Given what we have learned about the Bush Administration since the elections of 2006, do you now regret taking impeachment off the table?"

Comparing the 2008 Obama-McCain battle is a futile gesture

The latest comparison of past presidential candidacies centers on 1980. How similar is the 2008 race compared to the 1980 race?

In this scenario, Barack Obama is Ronald Reagan, Hillary Clinton is George H.W. Bush, John McCain is Jimmy Carter, and perhaps Cynthia McKinney and Bob Barr get to fight over being John Anderson.

(Then again, John McCain should remember 1980, the year he divorced his first wife and married his mistress, er, second wife.)

Seriously, will we be comparing the 2008 race to any other year in years to come? And does any previous year really come close to paralleling the 2008 race?

In a War Riddled with Lies, Pvt. LaVena Johnson "Committed Suicide" and "Was Not Brutally Raped and Murdered." We Don't Agree.

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ANALYSIS
by Meg White

"They don't care. They put on a uniform and they say honor and integrity and they have no morals, no honor and no integrity, and I don't even know how to sleep at night.

--Linda Johnson, mother of Pvt. LaVena Johnson

Pvt. LaVena Johnson, 19, was so excited to tell her mother that she was definitely going to be home from Iraq for Christmas, her favorite time of year. The next day, she was dead.

The military's casualty liaison told the Johnson family she committed suicide, found dead in her barracks with a gunshot wound to the head. However, two separate contacts told LaVena's father, Dr. John Johnson, that she was found dead in a contractor's tent. Allegedly, a trail of blood led from the contractor's tent into her tent, suggesting she was dragged there. Her tent was lit on fire, according to the witness who found her body.

Inexplicable Fox News silence on bombshell DOJ politicization report

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ANALYSIS
by Amy Weiss

Both Fox News and the White House press corps don't seem to have much interest in the report released Monday by the Justice Department's Offices of Inspector General and Professional Responsibility. It found that former DOJ White House Liaison Monica Goodling broke federal law in her hiring and promoting practices.

The report concluded that Goodling (and a other DOJ staffers) used political considerations when filling not just political positions but also career positions in the department. Civil Service laws stipulate that employers cannot discriminate based on political affiliations and views in the hiring process for career positions, while political positions are not subject to those same laws.

According to the report, Goodling prevented an extension of a U.S. attorney's detail position because she believed her to be a lesbian:

Now Focused On the Economy, Obama Is Still Fact Finding

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ANALYSIS
by Christine Bowman

Most voters have at least something in common with John McCain: "We don't know nothin' 'bout ..." economics. Or more accurately, we don't know all we should.

Still, many do recognize, unlike John McCain and pal Phil Gramm, that the U.S. economy is a mess not entirely of our own making. It's a mess made of bad public policy -- primarily policy that has put waging wars and protecting big capital ahead of balancing budgets or providing a social safety net. We've had seven-plus years of bolstering the Blackwaters and hedge funds instead of supporting the foot soldiers and home owners.
