Barack Obama's Methodical Madness

THE FIFTH COLUMNIST by P.M. Carpenter

Chris Matthews appeared early yesterday morning on MSNBC to breathlessly announce that the previous evening's ABC presidential debate -- almost universally deemed by the media a rough one for Barack Obama -- had once again opened a path for Hillary Clinton to seize the nomination. This is a regular occurrence for Mr. Matthews. Every time Obama so much as sneezes, Chris scrambles to cover his bets, which were once all on Hillary.

Before said breathless announcement, however, Matthews did rather thoughtfully address the central difficulty of Obama's modus operandi, which itself permits these recidivist claims about the nagging potential of a Clinton nomination. And that difficulty is the Illi

"First Spouse" should focus on reducing obesity levels

There is a prerogative for First Ladies (all women so far) to choose the topic where they will focus their time once their spouse becomes president. Laura Bush has spent her time, has spent her, uh, what has she been doing?

So I am not trying to force an issue for Michelle Obama, Bill Clinton, or Cindy McCain to consider, but whomever ends up being the First Spouse should really think about working on reducing obesity levels in the United States.

The Type 2 diabetes numbers and obesity levels are rising. Health care costs are significantly affected. As the cost of food rises, the increase may force families to eat worse instead of better -- cheap, processed food isn't usually the best choice and more expensive, healthier options may be out of range for more and more Americans.

While we may currently have the fittest president ever (body, not mind), the role models for reducing obesity, well, have been, well, we have had celebrities that have lost weight, does that count?

But the three remaining contenders have a background to speak to an audience that may be more likely to listen to them about obesity.

Cindy McCain was caught (or her intern was caught) in a plagiarism scandal when "family recipes" turned out to be lifted from the Food Network Web site.

Autism For Dummies (Lesson #1) -- Verse-Case Scenario by Tony Peyser

April is Autism Awareness Month and National Poetry Month. I'm a poet
and my son, Jeremy, has autism. Consider the following verse a twofer.

If you have a heap of friends
Autism will make a mess of them
Trust me: you'll be seeing
A rather good deal less of them.

People pulled away from us
Like we'd caused a public scandal
Our problems with Jeremy
They weren't equipped to handle.

My wife & I were soon shunned
Like Quakers, which we found outrageous
Many acted like they believed

A Quick Thought About The Debate -- Verse-Case Scenario by Tony Peyser

Lots of questions re: Barack Obama's pastor;
None about Mark Penn being a total disaster.

"Gotcha" moments in debates have worked in the past. Will 2008 really be different?

photo from CNN

Michael Dukakis in a "classic" gotcha moment -- the Bernard Shaw/death penalty question.

The MSM lives for "gotcha" moments (funny how we never see them against Republicans). But can this year be different? -- Chad

It's Friday and you probably are still bitter (yes, I mean bitter) about Wednesday's presidential debate on ABC-TV. I was deeply ashamed as an American, a voter, and a journalist. And I feel even more shame since I advocated more debates on broadcast TV; I should have clarified that to mean well-run debates. Jon Stewart summed up a lot of my feelings on "The Daily Show."

BARBARA'S DAILY BUZZFLASH MINUTE

Another reason, among many, NOT to vote for Bush clone, John McCain! “… the Arizona Republican not only favors overturning the Roe v. Wade decision and curtailing abortion rights but is also opposed to requiring contraceptive coverage by health plans and favors abstinence-only sex education.”

Subject: Bush And Cheney Impeachment

Once the the two are out of office they can no longer be impeached. Can they, however, be brought to trial for crimes against the Constitution ... after they leave office?

Shirley Smith: Killing Them Kindly

MS SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON

BuzzFlash,

Is this why we need a Republican partisan Supreme Court ... to decided how we kill people in the US? Let us count the ways. If the US citizen in question is not in prison, sitting on death row, then he can be walking on the street and get shot because another US citizen, with a gun, thought he was being threatened.

If that's not the case, there's always an overdose of prescription drugs or drunk driving ... not to discount the number of deaths due to out and out murder or suicide.

Shirley Smith: Debating the Debates ... No Respect for the American People ... Status Quo

MS SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON

BuzzFlash,

We had intelligent debates at one time and they were conducted by the nonpartisan League of Women Voters. The MSM, big guy media, chose these candidates years ago because they thought Clinton, who would be bent or biasED towards them, would win, or another scenario would be that this is the only way the Bush GOP thought they could win by splitting up the Democratic Party, knowing that the Clintons, in the end, will always try to please the Bushes.
