A BUZZFLASH GUEST CONTRIBUTION by Marci Hamilton
There is nothing so dangerous for a child as an insular, patriarchal religious organization, and the Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints, whose compound in El Dorado, Texas, is now under control of the Texas authorities, is one of the scariest examples. It took the extraordinary bravery of a 16-year-old girl to set in motion a chain of events that should have happened long ago.
She reported that she had been "married" to a 50-year-old man, forced to have sex, get pregnant, and have a baby. Because of her, Texas authorities have taken hundreds of children and women to safety. From all reports, they have yet to find her.

THE FIFTH COLUMNIST by P.M. Carpenter

Yesterday morning, before the Petraeus-Crocker Show aired in reruns, Tom Ricks of the Washington Post surveyed the Bush administration's Iraqi razzle-dazzle of last fall and extrapolated as best he could: In Round One, last September, I think the general and the ambassador scored a surprisingly decisive victory.... For months, Democrats expected the September hearing

BUZZFLASH EDITOR'S BLOG by Mark Karlin Editor and Publisher, April 9, 2008
Mark Penn, Not Gone and Not Forgotten I recently detailed how Mark Penn’s visit with the Colombian ambassador to the U.S. about the proposed free trade agreement with that nation, where union leaders are regularly assassinated, was in all likelihood carried out as part of his dual roles as then top Clinton campaign strategist and on behalf of Burson-Marsteller, which he also represented since he never stepped down as CEO -- and that was fine with Senator Clinton. Be-Elected
"What can I major in at Electoral College?"
Yes, the Electoral College isn't a real college. No late-night studying. No toga parties.
Trying to explain the Electoral College to a foreigner is pretty difficult. Explaining the Electoral College to an American naïve about politics is just as hard. And for many of those who do understand the Electoral College, they want to blow it up.
There is a movement to dance around the requirement. Illinois, Maryland, and New Jersey have signed bills into law noting that the states will get all their electoral votes to the candidate who wins the popular vote. The catch is that the bills won't go into effect until the states that approve such a bill would have 270 electoral votes -- the margin a presidential candidate needs to win.

Analysis
A BUZZFLASH NEWS ANALYSIS by Christine Bowman Since our current president was put in office in 2000 by the Supreme Court of the United States, it may be that congressional oversight of elections and their financing has become as quaint and obsolete a concept as the Geneva Conventions. That would be a shame. Yet there is no urgency evident among lawmakers or the Bush Administration to appoint and confirm replacement members to the Federal Elections Commission (FEC) in time to impact this year's election. Currently, the FEC has only two sitting members; and at least four of a mandated six members are needed for a quorum. Thus, the oversight commission's "neutering." Since January, the two remaining FEC members have been forbidden to issue opinions or launch new investigations.
