[UPDATED] Make Keith Olbermann the new "Meet the Press" host

Keith Olbermann and Gwen Ifill are two top choices to replace the recently departed Tim Russert as host of "Meet the Press."

UPDATED: Keith Olbermann has vehemently denied rumors from the New York Post (owned by Rupert Murdoch) that he threatened to quit if he isn't given Tim Russert's job as host of "Meet the Press." Olbermann also said, "But I don't even consider myself qualified for it."

It is fair to say that Olbermann hasn't gunned for the position, and has gone out of his way not to do so. But when the appropriate time comes to name a permanent successor, he would be qualified for the job.

Yes, it has been only three days since the death of Tim Russert. And you might think it cold, given that short period of time, to reflect on who should succeed Russert in that chair.

Then again, Jon Friedman of MarketWatch beat me to the punch, within three hours of the announcement of Russert's death, Friedman recommended David Gregory for the pick.

You could definitely make an argument for Gregory. But the image of him dancing with Karl Rove would give me great pause in naming him to the permanent selection, since relationships such as that is what is wrong with Washington journalism. And given the direction Russert took the program, a Gregory appointment feels like a step back.

It is fair to say that regardless of what you might think of Russert, he did save "Meet the Press" (MTP). "Meet the Press" struggled after Bill Monroe left in 1984. Roger Mudd and Marvin Kalb served as co-moderators (1984-1985), and Kalb did it solo (1985-1987). The other short-term hosts were Chris Wallace (1987-1988) and Garrick Utley (1989-1991).

The next host will have to establish his or her own legacy to the program. Given our times, and the overall timidity of the Washington press core toward Bush and Republicans, the program deserves someone who can stand up to government, regardless of who is in charge. And that person is Keith Olbermann.

Olbermann has stood up to Republicans and Democrats. He is one of the best writers in any form on television today, and could add a special comment at the end of "Meet the Press." And he is the only one currently at NBC News who has the reputation of asking the tough questions of all sides, a true tradition of "Meet the Press."

If you think that Olbermann wouldn't be seen as being worthy of the big network stage, NBC has run Sunday night editions of "Countdown" on the broadcast network, and the New Yorker notes that Olbermann was considered not once but twice as the anchor of the "CBS Evening News," a job that later went to Katie Couric.

If Olbermann got the MTP position, he would more than likely have to relinquish his sports duties - Olbermann has helped out on NBC's Sunday night football coverage. He might also have to give up the anchoring he had done during the primaries, taking more of a sideline reporter position, along the lines of what Russert did on those primary coverage evenings.

The big question is whether Olbermann would still do "Countdown." Olbermann should still be able to do both shows, but perhaps be given more time off for "Countdown," giving Rachel Maddow more of the screen time she deserves on MSNBC.

Olbermann and Gregory will be on the short list, since the network will likely fill from within the ranks of NBC News, an understandable move. But who else would be on the list?

Friedman and I agree on one thing: Chris Matthews should not be considered. Among many reasons, his style isn't conducive to the Sunday morning tradition. Chuck Todd is an outside pick, but his name will likely come up.

One name from the outside but who does have experience at NBC News is Gwen Ifill. Ifill, host of "Washington Week in Review" and contributor to the "NewsHour with Jim Lehrer," has worked at NBC News, and would be a great pick if someone from outside the network is chosen. If Olbermann isn't picked, she would be my second choice.

There is a serious possibility than NBC will make a short-term appointment later this week, since we are in the middle of perhaps the most exciting presidential race in 40 years. The USA Today is reporting that an interim host is expected to be named sometime after Russert's funeral. So the network could turn to a temporary caretaker, such as Tom Brokaw, who hosted the tribute yesterday to Russert in the MTP timeslot, or Andrea Mitchell.

NBC has a really tough choice. But as Russert has taught us, the selection impacts all of us, the 2008 race, and on some level, democracy itself. The network may make two decisions: short-term and long-term. In the long run, Keith Olbermann is just the right candidate who appreciates the past of television reporting and who understands the future of television reporting needs to be straightforward, blunt honesty. On some level, Russert would completely understand that transition.

Is there someone else you think would do a better job than Olbermann? Or perhaps you want to keep Olbermann right where he is. Or maybe you like the sugesstion of either Olbermann or Ifill. Either way, let us know who you want to see as the next host.

There are four requirements

There are four requirements for the host of MTP, one civility and two, great intellect, three, bullshit detector and four, a respect for the audience. Mr. Russert would ask a question twice and move on. He respected his audience enough to know they understood a duck or weave. He did not rely upon a "gotcha" style journalism. The issues of the day were discussed in a civil way producing conversation that carried forward. His roundtable discussions were fair and intelligent. The question for the new host is how to carry that forward. For NBC who has the chops to ask a tough question and can expect a response that can be deciphered. This person will have earned the right to ask the questions on behalf of the nation and the Fifth Estate. WHO? I nominate the following. Jon Stewart, certainly he meets the four criteria. Though he describes himself as "shooting spitballs from the back of the class" he has the intellect and displays a sense of morality that is shared by most Americans. He gets "it". My second nominee is even further afield, though this gentleman as earned the right to ask tough questions by his willingness to serve our country as an eyewitness in Iraq. Richard Engel has spent five years in Iraq ensuring that we as Americans understood not only the day to day occurences, but what was at stake, not only for Iraq but for our nation as well. He put his own life on the line so that we could know. He has earned the right to ask our leaders tough questions and demand an answer.

Thom Hartmann and David Broncoccio

I'd like to throw in the names Thom Hartmann and David Broncoccio. Thom's radio show is great but may not be able ro pull off a non-partisan job. Davaid, otoh, could and is my chouce.

Amy Goodmen would be the only real reporter for Meet The Press

Ifill would be a very poor choice for Meet the Press, she is a light-weight. The only person that could do justic to Russerts legacy is Amy Goodman of Democracy Now. If you don't know who she is then go to DemocracyNow.org and meet her. I was so shocked to see her as a commentator on Keith Oberman's show last week. She was of course her professional intellegent just the facts self. Check her out ya'll. you can watch DemocracyNow on most cable and all sattalite stations on 9415 or 9410 on the back stations.

"If Nominated, I Will Not Run - If Elected, I Will Not Serve"

Keith Olbermann, on COUNTDOWN's "Worst Person in the World" statement for June 19th, 2008, in response to some Murdoch-owned NY PUSTULE - er, POST "PAGE 6" story alleging both he and Chris Matthews were angling for Tim Russert's job at his funeral:

"As for myself, not only have I never threatened to quit if I didn't get Tim Russert's job, not only have I not vied for it, not only has the subject not even come up between me and anybody who will be involved in this sad task, not only did THE POST make this up, not only is the subject of Tim Russert's job not appropriate now, as anybody with a shadow of a heart would understand - but I don't even consider myself qualified for it. Would that Ms. Froelich, and her boss Richard Johnson, and HIS boss Mister Murdoch, understand just how unqualified they are for the jobs that the mistakes of fate have given them. Paula Froelich of PAGE SIX of the NEW YORK POST - Today's Worst Person in the World."

I think that pretty much settles it.

CHRISTOPHER HITCHENS ALL THE WAY

If you really want to see MSNBC take the gloves off and insert a no-bullshit junkyard dog as the new host of MTP, personal politics aside, I think Cristopher Hitchens would be the ideal candidate. The man is more than capable of effectively striking fear into the hearts of politicians, and is absolutely revered by many. The guy can run circles around MSM whores without even breaking a sweat, and if you put him toe-to-toe with any of the before mentioned picks from the so-called short list, they'd be a smoking hole in the pavement before the first commercial break. If he could only restrain himself long enough to remain neutral for the one hour time slot, he would not only ask the truly hard questions, but virtually cremate anyone you put in front of him. He has everything that will be required of Russert's successor and then some. Or we could always exhume Russert, give him the voice of Darth Vader, and carry on as if nothing happened.

Hitchens?!?!? He Still Believes the WMDs were REAL!!!

He had this whackjob scenario whereby Saddam Hussein, with his infrastructure crumbling around him thanks to Shock & Awe, nonetheless had the time and coordination of forces to hide all evidence of WMDs before the Coalition took over Iraq - and hid them SO well that nobody's found them Seven Years' Later!!!!

On second thought - that very sense of Deluded Belief in The Official Story would make him the perfect choice to host MSM show like MEET THE PRESS...by the Korporatist Kulture's lights....

David Gregory!

I vote for David Gregory. While I adore Keith Olbermann, I like him right where he is - keeping everyone accountable to the truth. David Gregory knows how to walk that fine line between hard questions and remaining neutral. As far as the 'dance" with Karl Rove, David didn't volunteer to dance with Rove. They just happened to be on the same stage at the correspondents dinner and Gregory was being polite "dancing". People who think Gregory is partisan only think so because he digs for answers and doesn't lie down like the news 'repeaters" the White House loves so well. David is eloquent, funny, charming and most of all intelligent enough to do the job.

How About Dan Rather....

Picture this... The Meet The Press moderator's chair being filled by a known tough reporter that is leading the media revolution to free it from corporate chains that ply strings of influence to the hands and mouths of journalists (or better yet infotainers), in the person of Dan Rather. Imagine the true debate that would be had in 2008 if Rather once again is freed to challenge the elected elite in Debates and appearances on the air. As a native Texan, now in exile in New York...I will attest to the steely resolve of Dan Rather's spine when it comes to standing up to those forces that wish to silence dissent, and have faith that he could, for a short while, offer the nation service in restoring honor and journalistic integrity to the de facto fourth branch of our American experiment in Democracy.

Just My Own Thought...

My pick for a new host of Meet The Press would be Chuck Todd. He's a sharp political analyst, and quite balanced and fair. He reminds me of a young Russert. Although he doesn't have the prior experience of conducting interviews as Tim Russert did...I believe he could grow quickly into the format quite well.

Olbermann, Ifill?

Anyone who believes Keith Olbermann could fill the position of Meet the Press Moderator is taking drugs. He has zero knowledge of true politics. He is a blogger from the Daily KOS, a left wing orgnanization. Gwen Ifill is just simply Boring. Intelligent yes, but not well suited for a job as monumental as this one. If NBC would like to get lesser ratings than they already have. Pick these losers and you will be lost. The People of NBC are drinking the Kool Aid again. Please consider Tom Brokaw as the interim moderator until you do a more thorough search for Tim Russert's replacement. Frankly there was only one Tim Russert. And his shoes will not be easily filled by the likes of the two you propose.

IT IS YOU WHO MUST BE ON "DRUGS"

IF YOU BELIEVE THAT KEITH WOULD BE BIASED. AS HAS BEEN WRITTEN, HE STANDS UP TO BOTH SIDES, WHICH IS WHAT IS REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION!!! HE IS A "TRUTH-TELLER," & THAT IS WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT!!!

Ah Jesus

It's impossible. See, people like you, as well as the others on this site, are just hopeless. I don't doubt that Olbermann has an Obama '08 shirt on under his jacket. That's how godamn obviously biased he is. It's not even worth showing examples of Olbermann's bias, because the fact is, if you don't see it, it's because you don't want to. Just mind numbingly stupid to see comments as the ones above. Sums up Olbermann's fans pretty well.

I Like Olbermann, But He's the Wrong Choice for MEET THE PRESS

One thing our resident trolls have got right is that Olbermann's more of a advocate journalist than an (so-called) "objective journalist". It's why many of us are glad to have him, b/c he's OUR advocate - but I honestly can't think of a worse job for him than "Moderator of MEET THE PRESS", or a job he'd hate more. What do you think would happen the first time he had to book, say, Faux Noize's Britt Hume as a guest? There'd either be blood on the studio floor before fadeout - or he'd be so desperately trying NOT to lose his temper that his head would explode on-camera!

Rachel Maddow would be a good choice now, and an excellent choice in five-ten years or so if MSNBC keeps grooming her - but there's no way the current NBC regime is going to let a thirtysomething woman w/a PoliSci Ph.D host their "Flagship Current Affairs Program"! I'm not sure which they'd be more afraid of - her gender, or her doctorate....

Olbermann's Wonderful Yes, But Not for Meet the Press

We need Keith in a position where he can keep telling truth to power as powerfully as he does. Meet the Press is not that venue. Someone earlier posted that Dan Rather would be good for that spot. I agree. Or if they could coax him to take it on, Bill Moyers.

YES Moyers would be a great pick

Moyers would be great, but he is very important to be a free voice to speak out against the establishment. he'd lose that platform cause he'd have to be or appear to be unbias Moyers does a great service to independents in america as a watch dog of the right wing and bush crime family doings.

HE IS THE RIGHT CHOICE, AND THE ONLY CHOICE!

Maddow, although bright, would be a bore, as would be Gwen Ifell. Keith is a professional, and would not "lose his temper." Why would Hume ever be booked as a guest on Meet the Press? That is a ridiculous notion and just proves your lack of knowledge!!!

Easy There - I'm on Your Side

I just feel MEET THE PRESS would be a poor fit for him, and he for it - and furthermore, I strongly suspect NBC has already put efforts into play to give them an excuse to ensure Olbermann never gets a prestige MSM spot like that. Where he is now on MSNBC is fine, far as they're concerned - it's a cable station and he's opposite Blowhard Bill O'Reilly, so he's useful as counterprogramming. But put him on the network? In a prime slot? With HIS opinions???

You think I'm beking paranoid or making stuff up? Read Peter J. Boyer's hatchet job - pardon me, "profile" of Olbermann in this week's NEW YORKER magazine, and marvel at the hypocrisy of so-called "objective journalism" slanting a story so readers reach a predetermined outcome without the "journalist" ever actually saying something libelous. I especially like the grease-job Boyer gave Tom "If the FBI's looking at Richard Jewell, we can be pretty sure he's the right guy" Brokaw, presenting him as a Sane Elder Voice of Mainstream Media desperately pouring oil on the waters of frothing lunatics like Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews.

BTW, the Brit Hume line? I was engaging in hyperbole - b/c I also don't seriously believe Keith Olbermann's head will actually explode in real life, nor do I seriously believe he would physically attack Brit Hume on air...as much as I would pay good money to SEE it.... ;)

bill moyers

if they don't pick olbermann, then bill moyers would be absolutly perfect. he doesn't take crap from anybody, and he is so full of class. i don't think i could nominate ANYBODY better.

Gwen Ifill...

is an Uncle Tom. She called the Plame Outing, "a summer scandal". It was high treason you stupid bitch.

Walter Cronkite

Ask Cronkite if he wants to do it. He's still healthy as far as I know. Even if he could only do the job for 6 months it would be worth it.

Is this a joke?

Are some of you people being serious? You would take Russert's legacy and DESTROY IT by placing a partisan hack like Olbermann as his replacement? You honestly think the best thing for Meet The Press right now is a CLEAR supporter of Obama and someone who dedicates ten minutes of every day to attacking McCain on his show? Olbermann is scum. His name shouldn't be in the same godamn sentence as Russert. Lay off the pot.

I hate having to make up a headline.

Let's assume Olbermann is a partisan hack. What would be the problem of replacing the partisan hack Russert with another partisan hack?

YOU MUST NOT REMEMBER........

Arianna Huffington's "Russert Watch" every week in the Huffington Press. Russert was very partisan for years, and not the nonpartisan person he is being made out to be since his death. He had become better in recent months, but for years was certainly not a "saint!"

Okay - ANOTHER Cheerleader for the McCain-Lieberman Ticket!

Make a right turn from here - you'll find the Faux Noize site if you sink low enough....

Here's an idea

Just talk to a bobble head doll instead of going on the internet. It'll give you the satisfaction you're so desperate for.

Tim Russert's legacy...

should be as an Iraq war cheerleading corporate tool, nothing more. Did KO turn you down for a date or something? Repuublicans like Russert are treasonous pieces of garbage. You are on the wrong site clown.

No way

ieI simply cannot comprehend the outpouring of grief about Russert. Russert was a corporate tool who admitted wandering around NDC with Bob Welch on Election night 2000 crossing his fingers, hoping for a Bush win. He said "things tend to run better when Republicans are in office." He never mentioned the 2 stolen elections. He was a major cheerleader for the war, until very recently. He spent years making Democrats look foolish, and Republicans look normal. He was simply a purveyor of mainstream Republican spin. No way should Olbermann replace him. KO is NOT a go-with-the-flow kinda guy, and won't toe the line., as Russert's replacement will. He should stay right where he is, build a bigger audience, and start turning the MSM back into something useful.

Haha

Because my idea of useful is a MSM that feeds me propaganda. Not even waking me out of a sound sleep, and asking me "What's useful?" would I say "Uh, propaganda." Some of you people are really thick. The only use Olbermann has is the ability to clearly measure someone's intelligence. All you need do is ask, "Are you an Olbermann fan?" If they say yes, you're now aware they know jack shit about politics. I'm not sure if that's what you intended by a useful MSM, however.

It's understandable.

If one is out on the lunatic fringe, reality seems propagandistic. Harry Truman once said: "The Republicans think I'm giving them hell. I'm just telling the truth."

Truth

Cherry picking statistics, dropping stories when they don't take the left turn you were hoping for, taking quotes out of context, inviting onl guests you know will agree with you and bellowing out idiotic special comments is not truth. In fact, I don't see a more polar opposite of the truth as Olbermann. I suppose if you call others part of the lunatic fringe, that means it's impossible for you yourself to be.

Truth

Actually, Mr. D, I'm in the mainstream of American thought. You happen to be bat shit crazy.

Nice

Gimme a call when a guest strongly disagrees with Olbermann on anything other than tanning lotion. Gimme a call when Olbermann brings Haditha back up. Gimme a call when Olbermann does anything but ignore Obama gaffes but tickle his smug self pink when McCain misspeaks. Don't even bother asking for my number - you won't need it. Sounds like a brilliant MSM to me. Hopefully we'll see the day soon when you won't hear anything bad about Democrats ever. Not because they do anything wrong, but because it's not as important as how old McCain is.

Hey, Bettysdad - we picked up a new troll!

Gee - I'm amazing ThomasM, YMan, Alibe50 and Neva Stolz aren't making him welcome as we speak.... ;)

drprodny, listing the trolls

drpodny, I, for one, would appreciate your current list of the trolls on the Buzzflash message boards. Mark Karlin doesn't banish these trolls and they are quite annoying. They are here with the tacit approval of the Republican Noise Machine. I wouldn't be surprised that Grover Norquist is somehow involved, as well.

Absolutely, Norm!

And you should give the list to the teacher so they can't go to recess, either!

BTW - Grover IS involved, but not Norquist............. It's Cookie Monster's pal. They're behind the whole thing.

Keith Olbermann wouldn't know how to interview a real politician

I was emailed and told someone was throwing my name around. Haven't been to this disgusting site for a long time! Still spreading your hate and disgust for everyone not kneeling to Obama! You liberals support anyone that has drank the kool-aid! Keith Olbermann needs to go back to sports broadcasting and leave the news to someone that is capable of reporting the truth. Is your great plan for America "Take Over the Media" and show those moderate Americans, only the liberals know what is best? People that use this web site has shown me the horrors of what liberal means! I who once thought myself a liberal have realized why so many have left the Democrats. Liberal has become just another far extreme political party of no use to anyone but themselves. Obama is just another out to serve himself and not the American people. Keith Olbermann, Obama and you people deserve each other.

You're "amazing" (sic) ...

... alright, "Doc" .......

................. but not in a good way.

Thanks Doc

I don't understand why these people bother. Do they think we will suddenly get really stupid and agree with them? Are their powers so strong we will bow down and confess our sins? Like all righties, all they can do is whine, complain, and tilt at imaginary windmills. They can never compete on the field of ideas, so they screech. Tune it out. Or, listen and laugh.

I Really Should, BD

But like Keith Olbermann, I'm a smart guy w/a short fuse who suffers fools ill. Not as smart as Olbermann, or with anything like his gift for language, but smart enough.

It's a character flaw, I admit it.... ;)

'"Suddenly" get really stupid?' Nahhhhhhhh .......

I'm sure it's taken years .....

Big decision

I've been watching MTP for years and Tim Russert was an OK interviewer but he really didn't ask tough questions. I could predict what the questions and answers would be on most shows. I can't picture any of NBC's current talent in the MTP lead. They're all a bunch of lightweights that look good on camera and are more interested in being buddies with the DC elites than asking real questions. The important thing to remember about Washington is that asking hard questions and doing real interviews is the quickest way to get bumped from the A-list party circuit. We all know which is more important...look at the news (lack of) coverage and puff pieces that we've seen over the past few years.

My worst fear is that they will pick Chris Matthews. If that happens MTP will probably be off the air by fall.

Meet the Press

I can't think of any other person who could carry off the rest of this season But Keith Olbermann. There is NOONE else who can pull this off as neutrally as Olbermann can through the election itself......Chris Matthews is a time bomb--his style would ruin this show for this election year. And Olbermann could still do the election night coverage. Why not? He has so much on his plate right now that doing the conventions and the election night coverage would be a piece of cake for him.....sorry Keith...........he might have to give up his gig for the football games......boohoo....this coverage is going to be a bombshell event and we need some one sane and mostly sober but also be able to insert some dialogue at times to lighten up the audience. Russert could do it and so can Keith...........can't imagine ANYONE else! gizmoe

Meet the Press

MAKE TIM RUSSERT SON TO BE A NEW HOST. HE IS VERY SMART, HE WILL CONTINUE THE LEGACY OF MEET THE PRESS

KO

First of all corporate media will never go against their interests. KO is regulated to cable and an audience of under 1/2 million. Keith gets airtime because his is the only program on a station that would have zero viewers without him and GE can say its fair. While Russert seemed like a nice person he never really asked tough questions and I haven't watched his show in years. I also wonder if KO would even take the job, if offered, as he may be asked to tone things down. There is no logical replacement on msnbc. Dan Abrams is a complete idiot as is tweety. David Gregory only looks hard but he's had a million years to ask questions and his are hard fluff. Gwen Ifill, an outside shot. Bill Moyers would ask hard questions. Besides if they take KO of the air daily I'll only have Jon Stewart and Colbert for tv news.

?????

You dont know what you are talking about!!! Tim was tough, never sreeming nor interupting his guests. You said you havent watch the show in years and yet you said he never asked tough questions.

Meet the Press

Of course, my first choice would be Keith Olbermann, but there is no way he would be acceptable to the MSM!! In fact, he is disliked and distrusted immensely because of his free-wheeling style and refusal to be controlled! (See this week's New Yorker profile.) My second choice is Gwen Ifell. She is intelligent, respectful and well-informed--and does not appear to be "bought off!" I think David Gregory is a terrible choice!!!! Please no!!! He is arrogant and immature, and was sooooo defensive about the Washington press pre-Iraq invasion. And I think he is well on his way to being just another "embedded" Washington reporter!

Olbermann Deserves Praise but is no Russert

I sincerely appreciate Keith Olbermann's no nonsense approach to journalism. That said, much of Olbermann's appeal stems from his "Worst Persons", "Best Persons" and occasional personal commentary. These three segments define Olbermann's hour, adding entertainment to content. "Meet the Press" is a different animal. Although sometimes criticized for not being as aggressive as it might have been, MTP derived its entertainment value, not from exposing political antics and hypocrisy, but from hard interviews with the political elite, few of which would have anything to do with Olbermann. So lets give Keith his due. God Bless You Keith Olbermann. You have a wonderful forum in Countdown. I wish you well with that. We're gonna miss you Tim...

Russert's replacement

After Jon Stewart's evisceration of Tucker Carlson on the now defunct Crossfire show a couple of years ago and Colbert's brave assault on W and the Washington Press Corps at the White House Correspondent's dinner, I would have to flip a coin to decide which one should chair Meet the Press. Both have the sorely needed courage and intelligence.

Unfortunately, picking KO

Unfortunately, picking KO would be like endorsing the Dems these many months ahead of the election. And I don't see that as something NBC is likely to do. But he'd definitely be there telling it like it is. MTP would lose it's R. audience. (Are they afraid of Truth?) Jon Stewart would ask the tough questions too. But somehow I think that neither could quell their sense of sarcasm. Gwen Ifill or Maddox would be wonderful choices who would maintain neutrality and objectivity. I imagine the girls are on the short list.

ONLY KEITH WILL DO!

But if the HATS at NBC are not brave enough, then I will settle for Chuck Todd. David Gregory, who used to appear trustworthy, has proved to us he is not, since beginning his new program, which has been a complete disappointment!!!
