Statement of Eleanor Smeal, President of the Feminist Majority on Senator Joseph Biden's Selection as The Democratic Vice Presidential Candidate

Having met with and worked with Senator Biden on many issues over more than two decades, I know he is committed to ending injustices towards women and securing equality. Over the years, Senator Biden has proven to be a friend of the women's movement. On a whole host of issues, Biden has been there for women, but in this statement I would just like to highlight a few.

For years, Senator Biden has been a champion in the fight to end violence against women. He was not only the principle sponsor of the 1994 Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), but he was the chief navigator and champion of the issue in the Senate. He has ensured in 2000 and 2006 the reauthorization of this act, which provides vital federal funding for women's shelters and programs for the reduction of violence against women. This trailblazing act originally provided that a woman has a civil right to enter federal court to secure monetary damages against her abuser. Although this section of the act was struck down by a conservative Supreme Court, Biden demonstrated his commitment to empowering women and his determination to rectify injustices.

Biden has also led in the struggle for women's equality worldwide. He is a strong supporter of the Convention to Eliminate All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), the international women's human rights treaty. As the chair of the Foreign Relations Committee, he held the first hearings on CEDAW. Also, his leadership led to the passage of the Afghan Women's Empowerment Act, which provided vital funding for women and girl's schools, employment training, and health clinics as well as for the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission. Biden has demonstrated that he not only understands the plight of Afghan women, but that he has also vigorously opposed Bush Administration policies toward Afghanistan that have not fulfilled our promise to Afghan women.

Biden's demonstrated leadership and accomplishments for women constitute an asset, which can not be underestimated in importance for this historic Democratic ticket in winning women's votes.

Biden... The TRUTH...

Will each and all of Joe Biden's efforts for women stand in the courts? NO!!! But the measure of a person is made of MANY factors. His EFFORTS and obvious INTENT is for the fair and honorable treatment of women. The recognition of their issues--- often bypassed by a male dominated government. I do not care what gender the leader is, their individual equipment is their own issue. I DO CARE how they represent me, my family, my friends, my country--- JOE BIDEN is a caring politician-- something of an oxymoron.... as opposed to JOHN MCCAIN-- the other kind of a moron

Women Want Safety but don't Accept Abuse of Power

Senator Joe Biden proudly proclaims that he was regularly and severely beaten by his older sister as a child and as an adolescent. This is the same sister that raised his two sons after his wife and daughter were killed in an auto accident. Biden has often claimed that the Violence against Women Act is the greatest achievement of his career. He also claims that a woman cannot be a perpetrator of domestic violence, despite the fact that hundreds of studies show that women commit acts of domestic violence as often or more often than men. Many studies also show that lesbian women physically attack their intimate partners at higher rates than heterosexual men. As a result of Biden's Violence against Women Act, the federal government pays states to create laws effectively requiring that innocent men be removed from their homes and families without even an allegation of violence, with no legitimate standards of evidence, when a woman makes a claim that she is afraid. Elaine Epstein, president of the Massachusetts Bar Association (1999), has said "the facts have become irrelevant... restraining orders are granted to virtually all who apply. Regarding divorce cases, she states "allegations of abuse are now used for tactical advantage". According to Epstein, who is also a former president of the Massachusetts Women’s Bar Association, restraining orders are doled out "like candy" and "in virtually all cases, no notice, meaningful hearing, or impartial weighing of evidence is to be had." Cathy Young reports on the Elaine Epstein quote and the broader issue at Salon.com here: http://www.salon.com/mwt/feature/1999/10/25/restraining_orders/ This report from RADAR (Respecting Accuracy in Domestic Abuse Reporting) provides much insight into the situation brought about, in large part, by Joe Biden. http://www.mediaradar.org/docs/RADARreport-VAWA-A-Culture-of-False-Allegations.pdf State restraining order laws are starting to fall because they're unconstitutional. The federal law behind them, written by Joe Biden, is likely to fall as well, not because it isn’t popular, but because it is clearly unconstitutional. There is a rapidly growing activist community dedicated to addressing this issue. One of the focal points of this community is the Glenn Sacks blog, www.glennsacks.com .
