In a BuzzFlash Exclusive, Dennis Kucinich Says He's Not Giving Up on Impeachment: Morality and the Law Require It.

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT
By Meg White

"This isn't just about impeachment. It's about reorienting our politics to a position which respects morality. Our moral compass needs to be reset here."
-Rep. Dennis Kucinich

In an exclusive interview with BuzzFlash Friday, Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) discussed the 35 articles of impeachment he introduced against President George W. Bush earlier this week. Though the word on the Hill is that the call for impeachment will not go anywhere, the Ohio representative is undeterred.

"This is a very grave matter that cannot be and will not be swept under the rug by some kind of a legislative trap," he said.

Representatives Robert Wexler (D-FL), Lynn Woolsey (D-CA) and Barbara Lee (D-CA) have signed on to the resolution, and Kucinich expects more co-sponsors in the coming days and weeks.

"There will be more. I'm quite confident of that, and as members start to read the document it'll keep growing," he said.

The proposal is now in the Judiciary Committee, where many expect it to stay at least until after the November elections.

"Some bills are sent to committee to be acted upon," Kucinich said. "But in this case it's widely assumed, based on statements by House leaders, that it'll be sent to committee and nothing's going to happen."

Kucinich entered the articles of impeachment as a privileged resolution, which means it can be reintroduced. He said that if the committee does not act on the resolution within 30 days, he will bring the subject up again in more detail.

"I think it's reasonable to give the committee 30 days," he said. "There are other areas of law that I have not, in the interest of time, put in the resolution that was introduced. But they will be put in the next one if no action is taken."

When taking over as Speaker of the House in 2006, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said impeachment was "off the table." She has stuck to that statement thus far. Rep. John Conyers (D-MI), Chairman of the Judiciary Committee and the man in charge of calling Kucinich's resolution up for debate, said at the Take Back America Conference earlier this spring that he would consider waiting until after the presidential elections to pursue impeachment.

Kucinich does not see this as an option.

"If we wait, we're licensing further abuses of power. There's been broad concern that this administration could attack Iran. Why should we give them the opening to do so by failing to challenge the lies that they told that took us into war with Iraq?" he asked. "We cannot wait for after the election. We don't know what could happen in the next six months with respect to a further erosion of our democratic process. And what the impeachment process would do would be to have a chilling effect on further abuses of the Constitution and on creating another war."

He's also concerned after the election there could be a drop-off in interest.

Historically, such conditions led to President Gerald Ford's controversial pardon of his predecessor President Richard Nixon. In addition, Bill Clinton did not pursue the Reagan/Bush I violations of the law, particularly the Iran-Contra and BCCI illegal activity.

"If they refuse to act, you know what'll happen. The election's over and it's like, 'Well, let's not go back. That was yesterday. Let's move forward.' That's what'll happen," he predicted. "The House leadership, which is above Congressman Conyers, and even the leadership of the Democratic Party now are joining in and saying, 'Well, we just can't do this.' Well, you know what? This isn't about politics anymore. This is about whether or not there's such a thing as the rule of law, and you can't have a political agreement to violate the law."

Kucinich differs with those who have suggested that the hearings could be divisive. He sees impeachment as an opportunity for healing both the partisan divisions between people and the mistrust Americans have for their government.

"This war has been a wedge, which has driven Americans apart," he said. As for Congress, he said that "there is no logical explanation for their position. We cannot abdicate our responsibilities. If we abdicate our responsibilities, we end up being in collusion. Why are we not acting? There's a reason why the Congress is so low in polls and I think it's because the American people feel we won't stand up."

Kucinich said Congress is not living up to its responsibilities to the American people. But he has personal feelings about the resolution that drove him to move forward on impeachment.

"Where's our heart here? What is going on that we can't connect with the suffering of other people?" he asked. "We can't say, 'Oh, yeah, we went into a war, they didn't tell the truth and all these people died. Sorry about that. Pass the Grey Poupon.' We can't do that. We cannot become so callous that we don't care that innocent people are killed. This is what's driving me."

Any casual reader of the articles of impeachment can tell the Iraq war figures heavily in the resolution. Of the 35 articles, Kucinich said around half are at least tangentially related to Iraq. While some articles deal with election fraud and offenses against Medicare, Kucinich is clearly bothered by the lead-up to the war.

"I can't think of any more grave offense than that the people of this country, at a moment of peril in post 9/11, would be lied to in order to get their support for a war," he said. "There's a difference between just being wrong and lying. And there's a pattern of lies here."

However, Kucinich said that the effort is not only about Constitutional law and his personal feelings. He wants to demonstrate to future U.S. presidents and the international community that this sort of behavior will not be tolerated by Congress.

These are not just symbolic concerns; Kucinich raised the specter of international involvement:

"How awful it would be if the Congress looks the other way and within the next few years some nation decides to prosecute a member of the Bush Administration for war crimes at a time when we clearly knew that there was sufficient evidence to proceed with hearings?"

Why Not Turn This Election Into A Plebiscite On Impeachment?

"How?" "We see to it that impeachment becomes the make or break issue." "Anything else?" "That our next president will have been a player in the mass movement that forces Congress to impeach President George W. Bush." "What about ending the Iraq War, negotiating with Iran plus turning things around here at home." "No problema?" "Why no problema?" "Because empowered by our having brought about the impeachment of George bush, it'll be up to us, the what sort of world."

How Does The Impeachment Of President Bush Empower Us?

"Has to do with the revolutionary high." "Which is?" "While we're actually changing the world, the incredulity of it all." "And if we then stop changing the world, what happens?" "The same as in past revolutions, the inevitable return to the same old same old business as usual status quo." "So how do we prevent this from happening?" "There's only one way." "Which is?' "A non-stop revolution."

Keep em' hungry! Right?

You know we live in the U.S. "OF" America! We are NOT only AMERICANS. We are U.S. citizens. The "Mexican" people are, by heritage, Native Americans and some Spanish who also live in America. Now, what does this mean? It means that most of those "wetbacks" are more American than a lot of you people that are so hot to keep them in Mexico! You had rather do that than to pay them a decent wage. After all, if they're in need they'll work real cheap, right?

Americans may have become too stupid...

to fight for our Constitution. I always thought anyone who wanted to go against it or our Bill of Rights was a traitor- now those kind of people are living on my tax money and questioning MY patriotism. Kucinich is a bit of a wonk, but he's a real hero. Scholars will tell how he tried to hold back the tide of stupidity. Too many of us have become cattle and sheep and the rest of us are left to our resources and imaginations. Right now I'm imagining what I'd like to do to those fuckers.

Letter to my Representative, Adam Smith

I am writing to commend Dennis Kucinich for being one of a handful of Representatives to actually step up and defend the Constitution, by bringing forth 35 articles of impeachment against President Bush. In a Congress who came forward, in a rush, to make the burning or our flag an unlawful act, to condemn remarks made by certain individuals who spoke out against Bush policies, who couldn't wait to invade and occupy a sovereign nation who did us no harm, plunging this country in to an economic abyss and the loss of over 4000 of this countries finest young men and women, 100's of thousands of deaths of innocent Iraqi's, ignoring intelligence gathered that was not substantiated, but steadfastly refuses to hold any one accountable or exercise their oath of office to protect and defend our Constitution, I say..shame on you, shame on you all, but most especially Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and John Conyers...put telecoms immunity "on the table" but take impeachment hearings "off"..?(don't give me that old tired song and dance about "not having the votes") Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and John Conyers are leaders..they control what is brought forward in the House and the Senate)... I hold the Democratic party leaders just as responsible

My Best Argument

As far as i can tell, the reason given for not impeaching by the leadership has been not that crimes were not committed, but that precious time would be spent that could be better used forwarding a legislative agenda of such import impeachment could be taken "off the table". But how's that going? ...yeah, that non-stop filibuster of everything kinda changes the standard operating procedures, so they might as well impeach.

HYPOCRISY

Kucinich says, "This is about whether or not there's such a thing as the rule of law..." If Kucinich cares so much about the rule of law, why does he consistently vote for legislation which rewards illegal aliens with a pathway to U.S. citizenship and against reducing chain migration, anchor babies citizenship, etc.? Why does he vote against border security and workplace enforcement vis a vis illegal aliens? He's for the rule of law out of one side of his mouth, but works against it from the other. Just one more shuckin' and jivin' politician.

My, What a Big Fat Bush Nazi Racist You Are, Royalsan!

Go to a Faux Noize blog or Redstate.org, and leave us REAL patriots, who are all progressives, be....

Right...

Read what NAFTA has done for us and the Mexican workers...give you a better understanding of what its all about...(by the way..Kucinich was for abolishing NAFTA) probably to much reading and comprehending for you..though...easier to let Rush, Sean or Lou think for you...

I Wrote to Mrs. Pelosi After Her Win...

to congratulate her. I also asked her at that time to support HR333, Rep. Kuchinich's first call for impeachment, and I have continued to write to her, even asking "What's the problem?" I feel like crying every time I think of what these morally bankrupt "leaders" have perpetrated on the American people. I think of one particular fallen soldier, the son of my daughter's assistant softball coach, the kind of stand-up kid who was gung-ho to protect his country. How must his mother feel each and every day? Now, extrapolate that based on the numbers and feel the collective pain. Ms. Pelosi, go to hell.

WHAT's WRONG WITH EVERYONE?

There is something strange going on - no, it's worse than that ...

The elected officials sworn to protect us and the Constitution will do anything BUT that!

I understand Conyers was threatened by Nancy Pelosi that if he proceeds to act on the articles of Impeachment it will be his last act as head of the judiciary committee! Where is this coming from? Has everyone been paid off? Or, is everyone being blackmailed?

With all of us American citizens begging for impeachment, what makes any politician claim that acting on impeachment risks losing Democratic seats in the upcoming election? Come on!

Senators and Congressmen are generally smart people. Are we to believe all of them suddenly went dumb? Daily polls are available to tell them the feelings of the public. They are obviously ignoring these polls for a reason.

In 2000 Ralph Nader claimed Democrats and Republicans are really the same. I wondered how Democrats managed to select losing candidates for every Presidential election.

Refer to the Supreme Court decision on Eminent Domain several years ago. This Court voted that corporate interests supersede those of individual homeowners. The decision allowed purchasers OTHER THAN the government to purchase desirable property if it was "advantageous" to the community. Part of the test of "advantageous" was corporate development and increased taxes paid to the local government by the developer who took over the property from a family who may have lived there for many generations.

Wouldn't we expect the right wingers of the Supreme Court to support the developers?

The truth is every vote to allow corporate takeover of desirable private property came from the left wingers of the Supreme Court! All the conservative Supreme Court Justices voted to preserve the rights of the homeowners. It was each and every one of the liberal Justices who changed the law of Eminent Domain so that homeowners no longer have protection if a developer wants the land they have owned for as long as they can remember.

Where were the newspaper articles exposing this vote? We read stories of heartbroken homeowners who now had no leg to stand on, but nobody reported WHO it was in the Supreme Court that voted to allow this to happen.

At the very least, supporting Dennis Kucinich and demanding a follow-up to the articles of impeachment he submitted is the duty of every American who remembers what America used to stand for. Once this horrible administration is prevented from making more daily disasters we can start to unravel some of the truths of what is going on in our government. Impeachment is the best place to start, so we don't have to worry about more wars as we try to get to the bottom of the inappropriate behavior and bad decisions of NEARLY EVERY ONE of our elected officials.

Among these decisions are the choices to cut every bill finding public benefits and approving every corporate perk presented. What country other than the worst type of dictatorship takes away every bit of support for the pubic in order to use these funds to support the military or to add to the already plentiful benefits afforded wealthy corporations for the past 8 years? Things like 1 bag of groceries per needy senior citizen per month were eliminated in order to pay Haliburton for one week's worth of coffee for a single Blackwater mercenary.

If we ever hope to get to the bottom of what happened to America to bring it down to the position it now occupies, following through with this impeachment is one of the best places to start. With this administration remaining in place all attempts to do this will be sabotaged, as was the investigation into the 911 attacks and every other investigation where current officials were suspected of wrongdoing.

Dennis Kucinich has been doing everything he can do as one person. He needs the support of Americans who still care about their country. Where are we all hiding?

Who's the Boss?

>>>> There is something strange going on - no, it's worse than that ... >>>> It's damned 'strange' when these so-called Representatives forget whom they are supposed to represent. I was given to believe that they represent "We The People". Do you suppose we maybe aren't paying them enough? The taxpayers' paltry $200k salary doesn't amount to much when it's all we have to bid with...against high rollers like Exxon-Mobil, Big Pharma, and assorted 'Media Conglomerates'. I suppose it makes perfect sense that these bastards do the work of the bosses who pay them; but you'd think they'd try to be a bit more discrete, and at least make it LOOK like they're on our side. The "Democrats" used to feign a certain respect for the public interest (the 'Common Man'), until they realized they could get away with ANYTHING as long as the Republicans kept nominating "Greater Evil" candidates and as long as they keep the citizenry convinced that we have only 2 choices--Republican or Democrat--"take it or leave it"! It's obvious that we need a party that doesn't feed at the same trough as those 2 parties that make up our sacred "Two-Party System"--a system that we are led to believe is the ONLY possible paradigm. It has never been so clear, that these two parties are both singing from the same hymnal and kow-towing to the same masters, as it has become since the 2006 election results came in, and Ms. Pelosi announced that "impeachment is 'off the table'". All that talk about ending the war and holding this Administration accountable and 'restoring our Constitutional government' was just so much bullsh*t--bullsh*t that the Democrats are going to get away with...IF we allow them to continue nominating candidates who are marginally Less Evil, and then slinking off to the polls to do their bidding, or (even worse maybe) throwing in the towel and staying home (as half of our fellow citizens already do, out of anger, frustration, despair or ignorance). If all those pissed-off people who have given up or just don't care anymore could be coaxed into going to the polls and casting their votes for whatever 3rd Party candidate comes closest to representing their Ideals-- or even whatever 3rd Party candidate tickles their fancies--this one bold move might be just what's needed to scare the Republicrat hacks, and embolden the electorate enough for them to realize that THIS really IS a democracy...where the people are sovereign, in spite of all evidence the Republicrats can disenfranchise us and rule our lives. DO NOT STAY HOME ON ELECTION DAY!!! Crawl to the polls if you must; and vote for a candidate that the party hacks and the corporate pundits tell us "Can't win"! ANY candidate CAN win...if enough of us vote for him/her. -------------------------------------- " It's the action, not the fruit of the action, that's important. You have to do the right thing. It may not be in your power, may not be in your time, that there'll be any fruit. But that doesn't mean you stop doing the right thing. You may never know what results come from your action. But if you do nothing, there will be no result." --- Mohandas Gandhi ONE BIG UNION

Sign of the Times.

"There is something strange going on - no, it's worse than that ..."

It's called the rise of the Illuminati - we are witnessing rapid integration of the New World Order, simple as that. Until people (Americans, specifically) stop being sheeple and start a revolution, this country is doomed. If that is the case, I hope we suffer terribly for being so damn uninterested in the defense of freedom. STUPID people!

Great interview, Meg!

Really grrreat job on this interview, Meg! (I'm going to run go buy another BF Premium right now...!) BTW Rep. Kucinich also gave an impassioned interview to Amy Goodman on today's Democracy Now! broadcast. There's an interesting point at which she asks Kucinich about Barack Obama's campaign for the presidency, and whether or not he'll publicly endorse Obama. Again Good Work! we all need to keep the pressure on Pelosi-- she doesn't have the right to say what's on or off "the table" when its not a choice but a REQUIREMENT of Congress to do oversight when serious allegations of crimes are alledged to have been committed against the US Constitution! (I get so mad I could scream everytime I think about it...) Happy Fri 13th.

You shouldn't be able to run out the clock on malfeasence

It's idiot to hear Dems or anyone say that his term is almost over so why bother. You shouldn't be able to run out the clock on malfeasence. This is a vital issue and needs to be pursued, regardless of the amount of time left in Bush's term.

Andrew, A Renton Barber My

Andrew, A Renton Barber My many letters have fallen on deaf ears ... But this should be read by Pelosi's staff. I am sure your so very busy emptying the tons of e-mails that you surly are receiving to bother to read what the country is collectively saying. So I will post this on Buzz Flash. Pelosi & Reed have no intentions of listening to the people who originaly elected them. Our government was overthrown with the help of the supreme court. Pelosi has vowed to not do her sworn job and will keep the house members from being put in any position of going against the wishes of the over throwers. We need to collectively ask our representatives to install Dennis Kucinich as speaker of the house right after Pelosi loses her reelection which is surly what is about to happen with her total indifference to what we the people are begging for.
