Katherine Harris, Go Away!

A BuzzFlash News Analysis

BuzzFlash thinks Katherine Harris has done enough damage to our democracy and needs to go away, far away, and leave our election process and our country alone.

Voters, especially those in Florida, need only read about Harris' letter in Harper's Magazine to realize that we all suffer when someone like Harris is left in charge of our elections. Unfortunately, Harris was Florida's Secretary of State until last month, which resulted in another round of voting problems there.(1)

Additionally, if you weren't already convinced that Harris was complicit in the theft of the 2000 Presidential election, you would be the minute you read that "Florida's top elections officials and a leading U.S. civil rights group . . . settled a lawsuit that alleged Florida systematically excluded thousands of minority voters from the 2000 presidential election."(2) Greg Palast was right. Again.

Below are some recent stories on Harris and below that is a fundraising email from her campaign. Read through it all and you'll be asking the same questions we ask: Why hasn't Katherine Harris been run out of the country for making a mockery of our election process?

Subject:  A personal message from Katherine Harris

September 3, 2002

Dear Friend,

As you may know, I have officially resigned as Florida's Secretary of State to return home to run full-time for the Republican nomination of Florida's new 13th Congressional District.

I am seeking our Party's nomination for the new 13th Congressional District because I believe we need more statesmen and fewer politicians in Congress. The work ahead is hard -- not glamorous. I will be passionate and diligent in fighting for our priorities because I have real hope for this District, this State and our Nation.

During the Clinton/Gore administration, partisanship and polling overruled real efforts to repair and reform government, leaving a legacy of raids on Social Security, limited access to affordable prescription drugs and the highest tax burden since World War II. We must revitalize our economy by lowering taxes and punishing corporate executives who commit fraud to ensure a healthy retirement for hard working Americans.

As you may know, the Republican Primary is September 10th - and I need your help.

One week isn't much time, but I've been working hard for more than a year to win our Party's nomination and I look forward to facing whatever Democrat is nominated. (The Democrats have a primary - which includes a friend and college classmate of Bill and Hillary Clinton, a member of Rev. Jesse Jackson's coalition and a former t.v. reporter.)

Now, we must decide what resources I can dedicate to our TV commercials. Television is very expensive, especially this year when a thirty second TV ad on the evening news in the district costs $750 to $1,200. And the Democrats are already on the air attacking me.

Will you help me win the Republican nomination for the 13th Congressional District and gain the momentum to move on to general election victory with a contribution to my campaign?

I cannot rely on the liberal TV news to correct the falsehoods that partisan Democrats daily hurl my way and I have to be honest that even I am surprised by the harshness of the attacks. The liberal TV networks (and print media) continue to slander my role in election 2000- although they cannot point to one letter in the law that was broken.

I need your help to defend the same values and principles that carried us through the 2000 Presidential election.

My television ads talk about the ideals you and I share, our priorities, and my record of achievement in the Florida Senate and as Secretary of State. I've worked to bring people together and I'm ready to show Washington how positive leaders can work together for real reform and real change.

We have one more week to talk with voters, mobilize our strong grassroots team and walk door-to-door before the Republican Primary, when our party will nominate the person to replace retiring U.S. Congressman Dan Miller. The newly formed district, approved by the Florida Legislature, is only 49% Republican.

I can win, but I need your help now, during this critical and difficult part of our campaign -- getting out the vote.

Please join my team today and help me put our TV ads on the air. Our grassroots team is strong and these positive TV ads will make the difference. I hope you will help by sending your much-needed contribution today. Please click here to contribute to the campaign. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Katherine Harris

P.S. I'll be able to count on good friends and a remarkable grassroots team, but I'll also have to rely on television to reach the new voters in the district and to fend off the Democrats' negative attacks.
