| Bush Promotes Iraq Insurgency by Supporting Hungarian Revolt Against Soviets A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT In Hungary on Thursday, President Bush gave a speech comparing the 1956 Hungarian Revolution with his war in Iraq. Few people have accused Bush of knowing much about history, but one might have hoped his writers would have at least looked up the revolt on the internet before making such an absurd analogy. Followed through, Bush is actually advocating the insurgency against our troops. Here are the facts. In October of 1956, millions of Hungarians rose up against their oppressive, communist government and an occupying Soviet force. It was a popular democratic revolution by the people, for the people. The attempt at government overthrow was not started or assisted artificially and arbitrarily by another nation for its own interests. Hungarians decided on their own accord that they needed to create their own freedom, much like we did in our revolution. Though the revolt was repressed, Hungary led the movement to dissolve the Warsaw Pact in 1989 and has since become a democracy and our ally. In contrast, Bush forced foreign political, economic, and social agendas on the Iraqi people when he decided they wanted it. Bush ignored the Hungarian model of self-determination. Let’s take a deeper look at Bush’s analogy comparing Iraq and 1956 Hungary. In both cases there is local movement trying to expel a foreign occupier. First it was the Hungarians against the Soviets, now it is Iraqis against Americans. Since Bush is glorifying the Hungarians’ example, he is actually supporting the people killing our troops. When you actually think about what Bush is saying when he advises that “Defeating these enemies will require sacrifice and continued patience, the kind of patience the good people of Hungary displayed after 1956,” it is disturbing indeed, especially while he fails to develop an exit strategy. If Bush is really as inspired as he said he is by the Hungarians Revolt, he should redeploy our troops and let the Iraqis create their own destiny. A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT |
